Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of one of the country’s greatest machines was actually born in a log cabin,1to high school on horse back and without2of university degree(indeed, at age 14), thought of the idea of electronic television. In 1906 Farnsworth was born in a community near Beaver City, Utah,3by his grandfather.4he was 12, his family moved to a ranch (大牧场)in Rigby, Idaho, which was four miles from, the nearest high school,5necessitating(使成为必要)his daily horseback rides. Because he was interested in the electron and electricity, he persuaded his chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman, to give him6instruction and to allow him to listen to a senior course.
The death of his father forced him to leave at the end of his second year, but, as it7, at no great intellectual cost. There were, at the time, no more than a handful of men8the planet who could have understood Farnsworth’s idea for building an electronic television system, and it’s9that any of them were at this local community. One such man was Vladimir Zworykin who had moved to the US from Russia with a Ph. D in electrical engineering. He went to work for Westinghouse with a dream of building an all-electronic television system. But he wasn’t10to do so.

I suspect that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our1, and especially if it’s given from the2. When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but3them. Just take them4. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than5it.
One of my patients told me that when she 6to tell her story, people often7to tell her that they had once had something just like that happen to her. Subtly her pain became a story about themselves. 8she stopped talking to most people. It was just too9. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the 10of attention to ourselves. But when we listen, they know we care.
I have ever learned to 11to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the tissues(纸巾)12I realized that passing a person a tissue may be just another way to shut them13, to take them out of their14of sadness and pain. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there 15them.
This 16thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been17 since I was very young at school. I thought people listened only because they were too18to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has far more19 to connect than the most well-intentioned20 .

The climate will be warm and 1 with prolonged droughts in most of the world’s grain growing 2. Because of the increase in temperature, the ice cap will begin to melt and sea level is predicted to 3 about ten meters, causing flood in many areas.
In the atmosphere, a concentration of carbon dioxide acts like the 4 in the roof of a greenhouse. It allows the sun’s rays to pass 5 easily on the way to the earth’s 6, but prevents heat 7 by the earth from escaping back into space. 8, as the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide rises, because of the industrial burning of fossil fuels, this greenhouse effect could 9 the temperature of the earth. The burning of fossil fuels 10 carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide accumulates(积聚) in the atmosphere, and 11 the greenhouse effect, the temperature of the earth’s surface could rise. 12 this warming up took place, the polar ice caps would begin to melt,13raising sea level. The 14 influence that seems to be cooling the earth is the variable behavior of the sun. As the sun rotates(旋转) on its orbit, it presents hotter or colder faces to the earth, and this seems to have a considerable effect 15 the distribution of the earth’s atmospheric pressure and on the wind circulation. The heat 16 of the sun also varied, the latest trend being 17, the heat output appears to be decreasing and the indications are that the earth’s 18 is entering a cooler cycle. Scientific models that take 19 account this 20 behavior of the sun are also predicting that the world should be entering a new Ice Age.

I was1when Mr. Ingram knocked on our farmhouse door in Sacred Heart. Okla. The old farmer2about a mile away and needed an assistant to help out grass. It was the first time I had been actually3for work.
Mr. Ingram was4with the job I did and ended up hiring me to dig potatoes. I even5when a6cow was being born.
One day he found an old truck that was7in the 42, sandy soil of the melon field. Was full of melons that someone had tried to steal before their truck got stuck.
Mr. Ingram explained that the truck's owner would be returning soon, and he wanted me to8the truck and lean(倚靠) against it. Soon a man from a nearby village, who had a terrible9for fighting and stealing,10with his two full – grown sons. They looked11.
While12Mr. Ingram said, “Well, I see you want to buy some13.”
There was a long silence14the man answered, “Yeah, I guess so. What are you getting for them?”
“Three dollars each,”15said immediately. “Well, I guess that would be16enough if you help me get my truck out of here,” the man bargained.
It17out to be our biggest sale of the summer, and an unpleasant, perhaps unfortunate incident had been18. After they left, Mr. Ingram smiled and said to me, “Son, if you don’t19your enemies, you’re going to run out of friends.” Mr. Ingram died a few years later, but I have never forgotten him or what he taught me20my first job.
