题目内容

When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write and illustrate my own books. Half the students sneered. The rest nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be silly, only geniuses can become writers,” the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this semester.” I was so humiliated(羞辱) that I burst into tears.
That night I wrote a short sad poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the Capri’s Weekly newspaper. To my astonishment, they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed it to my teacher and fellow students. They laughed. “Just plain dumb luck,” the teacher said. I tasted success. I’d sold the first thing I’d ever written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck, that was fine with me.
During the next two years I sold dozens of poems, letters, jokes and recipes. By the time I graduated from high school, with a C minus average, I had scrapbooks filled with my published work. I never mentioned my writing to my teachers, friends or my family again. They were dream killers and if people must choose between their friends and their dreams, they must always choose their dreams.
I had four children at the time, and the oldest was only four. While the children slept, I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. It took nine months, just like a baby.
A month later Crying Wind, the title of my book, became a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and Braille and sold worldwide. I appeared on TV talk shows. I traveled from New York to California and Canada on promotional tours. My first book also became required reading in native American schools in Canada.
People ask what college I attended, what degrees I had and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.” I just write. I’m not a genius. I’m not gifted and I don’t write right. To all those who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Don’t listen to them.” I don’t write right but I’ve beaten the odds. Writing is easy, it’s fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesn’t hurt.

When I was a small boy my family was very poor. My father always used his savings to       my mother to visit her parents who lived far away. There was just my younger brother and myself in the house. One evening Dad came home from       and there was no food in the house, not       a piece of bread. Although we were       , my brother and I went to bed without eating anything.
My father had no money, but I knew from the         on his face that he could not let us have an empty stomach. He         the house and about two hours later returned and quickly       us up. He had in his hand two small potato pies, which he gave us to eat. I don't know where he got the       but somehow he       to get us something to eat.
My father had not eaten and had worked all day       he sat there with great satisfaction watching us eat. This has       stayed in my mind and left more of an impression than any amount of       he may ever have given me.
At that moment, I felt happy knowing that he was there and would not let us      .
I guess the       I am trying to make is that in difficult times it is       not to show weakness but strength and character. If a       is the cement (粘合剂) that holds a family together, then the father is       that strengthens that cement.
It is his values and       and memories that have carried me forward and helped me to      my own problems in life. In my own       I have learned that it is the valuable time you spend with your children and the values you give to them that will remain with them always.

Recently I understood the true meaning of love. That would have been, Kane, a boy. Kane was the two-year-old son of Joline, my new neighbor, who moved here from California.
Kane was born with hard sticks for   . And on that morning I        the effect that Kane’s physical        had on his family. But I also witnessed so much        that.
I saw an extraordinary family that embraced this special child, a family that wouldn't allow Kane to know he was       . Joline had constructed a small cart just a few inches        the floor for his son to get around. Using his hands to move about, the cart      Kane to “go to” any place just as        else was able to do. Kane was more than just a member of the family, he was the       .
Much later in my life, I came to        that God had sent this child to help some of us who just weren’t getting what        was all about. Even with my limited capacity for understanding at that time I knew that Kane was a        developed spirit with great wisdom.
Kane demanded attention,        not because of his mobility challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no        or shortcomings. The truth is that he received        because he was alive and real and had so much to offer.
Kane was and        is lots of warm and powerful energy      to us all so we might learn that       : Love surpasses all things. If you met this kid, you’d want him for a friend        he was with so much to       .

Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it    patience. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to    some action. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home   .
Joining a club or group, talking to those who like the same things     you do is much easier. Or join someone      some activity.
Many people are    when talking to new people.   all, meeting strangers means seeing the unknown .And it’s human nature to feel a bit    about the unknown. Most of fears about       new people come from doubts about    .We imagine other people are    us——finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself      you are, and try to put the other at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confident even    you don’t feel that way when you    a room full of strangers. Walk tall and straight, look at other people directly and    .
If you see someone you’d like to    , say something. Don’t wait for      person to start a talk.
Just meeting someone      does not mean that you’ll make friends with that person.   is based on mutual(相互的) likings and “give and take”. It takes time to
  friendship.

I have a cousin who’s a farmer. If you saw him on market day with his old boots and worn hat, you might think he was a tramp (流浪汉). But he’s either buying or selling       for thousands of pounds. He doesn’t have a luxurious lifestyle, but the farmhouse, dozens of acres of land, machinery, cattle, chicken and crops must be worth a fortune. You might describe him as a       man, but he doesn’t look like that.
My father owned a shop selling newspapers, cigarettes, birthday cards, toys, books and magazines. The shop       a comfortable life for us, but we weren’t rich. The only luxury was that my father owned a car when most people in our town couldn’t afford one,      professionals such as doctors and lawyers.
My point is that       can be misleading. You often can’t       the rich from the way they look.
I once met Richard Branson, the Virgin Airlines tycoon (巨头).He’d       a hot balloon across the Atlantic and landed in the Irish sea. When he was rescued, he was wearing jeans, a T-shirt and a sneaker. You’d       have guessed he was a multimillionaire.
Andrew Bruce, the 11th Earl (伯爵) of Elgin,       a group of press people to his luxurious home in Fife, Scotland. His      , the 7th Earl of Elgin was famous for removing and transporting to Britain priceless sculptures from the Parthenon, a very famous temple in Greece. The so-called Elgin Marbles can be seen in the British Museum. The Earl’s castle was       cold, despite a fire burning in the hearth (壁炉). He explained to us,“I’m sorry it’s so cold, but you should know that a gentleman’s house is always cold.”
There you have it:     doesn’t always bring comfort.

Have you ever not wanted to do something so badly that you would rather die than go? Well that’s how I      about joining Madcaps, a mothers and daughters club assisting philanthropies(慈善事业).But now I believe that you    open up your mind to things because eventually you might    end up enjoying it.
“It’s a waste of time”, I said when my mom told I had to join Madcaps, and then when she said I had to      at a homeless shelter I thought this just could not be      .
We got there late, of course, and the security guard led us to the kitchen   we ran into 48 other fellow Madcaps members. Since I’m    so socially awkward(糟糕的) I had met only one person at a pool party, earlier this year. I looked around for her but she was not there. Damn, I was    ! When the man in charge came out and asked for 3 mothers to work outside the      to clean up the plates, my mom just happened to volunteer leaving me to      food with others.
Soon the    families started to walk in and a little girl walked up and pointed to the food I was    I gave her the cold sandwich, she nodded in a form of saying      , and then walked to join her family at the large table.
As she walked away I thought of how much I       I get to go the top schools. I have a great house and I have a warm meal every night. It    that little girl to make me realize how lucky I am. After that moment I had a change of    . Now, I love Madcaps and don’t miss one meeting, I have       being socially awkward and now have many friends. And this year I am sure I will do      the required 20 hours of philanthropies.
I believe that if you have an    mind about things you can accomplish more and become a better rounded person. I believe sometimes you can make a difference just    doing one thing you don’t want to do .

Last Sunday I made a visit to some new neighbors down the block. No specific in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become.
When I was a kid in New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine. Most stores were closed, almost nobody worked, and the highways, as a result, were not desperate steeplechases(障碍赛跑) they have become today. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek.
The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly. It was the repetition to church, our reward for an hour of devotion, an opportunity to take advantage of the fact that Dad was not at work, we were not in school, and there was no housework that couldn’t wait until Monday. Sunday was, indeed, different from the other days of the week, because everyone seemed to be on the same schedule, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everybody else.
Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to find that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association. In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visiting someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to DO this Sunday?” The answer can range from going to the mall, to participating in a road race, to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such an answer would feel strange, which sounds like an echo from another era.
I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land and tight relationships. Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural feature still keeps at least remnants(残余部分) of the moral of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one another in the face of economic vagaries(反复无常的情况) and a challenging environment.
小题1:The writer’s general impression of the Sunday in the past was a day when__.
A.everyone was paying a visit to some relatives far away
B.everyone seemed to be free for others
C.Dad was not at work while Mom was busy cleaning the house
D.nearly every adult would go to church and children weren’t at school
小题2:In the fourth paragraph, the writer compares the response “I’m making a Sunday visit to family” to an echo from another era because_____.
A.people nowadays prefer staying at home on Sunday
B.such answers are rarely heard in our modern society
C.people in the city dislike being disturbed on Sunday
D.visiting someone on Sunday was routine in the past
小题3:From the last paragraph we may infer that_____.
A.people in Maine suffer more from economic depression and the changed environment
B.people in Maine have abandoned their tradition and lived an absolutely new life
C.land in Maine is short, thus the relationship between people is tense
D.people in Maine tend to help each other out of necessity
小题4:What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Doing many activities on Sunday is beneficial.
B.We should often travel a long distance to visit some friends and relatives.
C.Nowadays, Sunday has almost lost its association as a day of rest.
D.We should abandon some old tradition.
