I, together with my two friends, were eating dinner at a Chinese restaurant, located in the center of New York. I noticed the young woman eating with two kids. We stop by and I asked the kids if he believed in Santa. The elder boy, whom was about seven years old, pointed his younger sister and said, “She does, but I don’t. ”I told them Santa was real and as we were paying for our dinner, I paid for theirs, either. Are you good with money?I learnt to be careful with it during my childhood. My father would give me some pocket money and tell me it should last for a whole week. So,I learnt I had to save some if I didn’t want to run out of cash quickly. No surprise there:my dad was an accountant!

It's never too early to become money savvy(会理财).That's what British personal finances expert Martin Lewis thinks. He was part of a successful campaign to include financial education on the school curriculum in England. It will be embedded(植入)in maths and citizenship education. This includes children from 5 to 16 years old.

Lewis says:“We desperately need to break the cycle of financial illiteracy(无知)in the UK—one of the causes of our current economic crisis and a huge contributor to continued mis-selling epidemics(违规销售).”

Being careful with money pays off. Banks in Britain recently found themselves having to pay a large number of people who were persuaded to spend money and buy insurance policies they didn’t need. Many wasted their money on investments which were not for them. Few have the patience to read the small print.

Martin Lewis has made millions from his website which advises people to be thrifty(节俭)and refuses any suggestion that he is mean. The expert says in an interview with the English newspaper the Daily Express:“the better you are with your cash,the better your life can be. People think I am telling them to stop spending money but I am simply telling them to spend it wisely.”

There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained.

He was a brilliant, creative, and educated man. He had gained a lot of experience while traveling around the world, so he became very depressed after his accident. The letter said, “Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from cell to cell until they literally fall to pieces! ”

A food additive (添加剂) is any substance that is added to food. Many people are put off by the idea of “chemicals in food.” The truth is that all food is made up of chemicals. Natural substances like milk, as well as man-made ones like drinks on sale in the market, can be described by chemical formulas. Some chemical substances are indeed harmful, but a person who refused to consume any chemicals would find nothing to eat.

The things we eat can be divided into natural and man-made substances. Some people feel that only natural foods are healthy and that all man-made ingredients are to be avoided. But many natural chemicals, found in plants and animals, are harmful when eaten, and some laboratory-made substances increase the nutritional value of food. Other chemicals have natural and man-made forms that are exactly alike: vitamin C is vitamin C, whether it comes from a test tube or from an orange. Like “chemical”, “man-made” doesn’t necessarily mean “not fit to eat”.

Food additives are used for many reasons. We add sugar and salt and other things to foods we prepare at home to make them taste better. Food producers have developed a range of additives that stabilize(使稳定), thicken, harden, keep wet, keep firm, or improve the appearance of their products. Additives can make food more convenient or nutritious, give it a longer shelf life, and make it more attractive to the consumer, thus increasing the sales and profits of the producers.

Food additives are presently the centre of a storm of serious argument. Food producers have been known to use additives that have not been proved safe; some substances in common use have been proved unsafe and have been taken off the market. Many people feel there’s a risk of eating food to which anything has been added. But food additives are now regulated by the FDA of the federal government, and new additives will go through strict testing before they can be placed on the market. For most people, the chances of developing serious side effects (副作用) from the long-term use of presently approved (批准) food additives are very small.

I believe the very nature of writing is to set the writer free, not to impress readers. I encourage my students to write freely. By now we taste the good of free writing and enjoy it very much. And I imagine you may have tons of questions about free writing. First, how to improve my logic? 1.The power of writing has to do with its emotion, and logic, and therefore we try extra hard to be logical — but this kind of forced logic is not something we can force on ourselves, or on our writings. When we let our emotional voice come out freely, our logical voice will also come out — that is the charm of free writing. Read your own free writings, you will find many free writings are quite logical indeed. You are not that illogical as you thought of yourself.

2.Yes, sometimes our ideas are boring, and sometimes we are boring people — so what? Who says we have to be amazing all the time? Let’s respect our human reality. The good thing we need to do is to continue to write patiently. Persistence wins the battle. Sometimes the idea may seem boring to us, but as we continue to write, something else will come up. 3.Our writing does not have to be immortal(不朽的) or amazing. Writing is just a way to express ourselves. Please don’t worship writing.

Now, what if my writing often shows my dark side that I don’t want to see at all?
