[1]Jaime Escalante is considered one of the best teachers in the United States. He was born in 1930 in Bolivia and taught math in his home country for twelve years. In the 1960s, Jaime and his wife came to the United States. During the next several years, he learned to speak English and repeated his college education and teacher training.
[2]In 1974, Mr. Escalante was hired by Garfield High School to teach math. The school was in a poor area of California. Many of the students had serious problems with drugs and violence.
[3]Mr. Escalante’s students were mostly Mexican-Americans from poor families. Many were the worst students at school and thought to be “unteachable”. But Mr. Escalante pushed the group to work hard. He told them that he believed in them, but they must have the desire to be successful.
[4]Jaime started an advanced math program with a small group of students. In 1982, eighteen of his students took a college-level test. They all passed. Officials at the testing company suspected the students of cheating. Mr. Escalante expressed strong disagreement. He said the students _______ because they were from a poor school.
