Emily's wedding (婚礼) dress arrived at five o'clock in the evening, just seventeen hours before the wedding.

"I just try it on, mother!" she cried, as she ran upstairs. Three minutes later Emily's cries brought her mother up. The dress was much too big for her. Emily was in tears.

"Take it back to the dressmaker's." Mrs. Bale said. "She must alter it tonight. Hurry now. Take it off and go."

The dressmaker's shop was closed." CLOSED FOR ONE WEEK HOLIDAY" said a notice on the door. Fresh tears rose to Emily's eyes. She ran home again to her mother.

"This is unlucky," Mrs. Bale said. "But what are we going to do? Shall I ask Mrs. Peter to help? She was a dressmaker once. I'm sure she could alter it for you."

Mrs. Peter was brought in and began to work. She could see what was wrong. She had to take in a lot of material at the front, and that was a big job. In fact, she almost made it again. At about ten o'clock the work was finished, and Emily tried her dress on. It fitted her beautifully.

The three women were having a cup of tea when the door bell rang. Mrs. Bale answered it and looked into the worried eyes of a young woman. The woman was carrying a large box.

"Does Miss Emily Bale live here?" she asked.

"Yes, she is my daughter." "Oh, I am glad I've found you. There's been a mistake. Your daughter has my wedding dress, and I've got hers. And I'm getting married tomorrow!" She held out the box to Mrs. Bale.

Dad—This poem came directly from my heart. I love you so much! It scares and amazes me that you go out every day and risk everything to provide us with all that we have. I wrote this to express how much I love you and how much lost I’d be without you ---Laura. PS: Hey, let’s be careful out there.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

When I was at university, I studied very hard. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams. Others didn't do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time drinking in the Students' Union than working in the library.

Once, at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. Beside each question, we had to write "True" or "False". While I was studying in my room the night before the test, Fred was watching television. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan.

"It's very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. I'll take a coin into the examination room. I haven't studied a chemistry book for months, so I'll just toss the coin. That way, I'm sure I'll get half the questions right."

The next day Fred came cheerfully into the examination room. He sat tossing a coin for half an hour as he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.

The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor .

"Oh, good," he said. "Have you got the result of the test? What mark did I get?"

The professor looked at him and smiled.

"Ah, it's you, Baines. Just a minute."

Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.

"I'm terribly sorry, Baines," he said, "you failed."

1. Fred Baines _______.

A. spent quite some time working in the Students' Union

B. worked hard at his lessons but he failed again and again

C. often failed his tests

D. wouldn't work hard so long as he could pass a test

2 Fred looked perfectly calm before the chemistry test because _______.

        A. he was already well prepared for it

        B. he didn't think the test was so important for him

        C. someone had promised to help him out

        D. he believed he had found out a way to pass the test without any difficulty

3. The professor told Baines the result of the test by tossing a coin because _______.

        A. he hadn't marked all the papers yet

B. he couldn't remember the mark Baines got

        C. he wouldn't hurt Baines' feeling by telling him the truth

        D. he wanted to teach Baines a lesson

Hunting with birds is a very old sport. In some countries the golden eagle is used for hunting wild animals. They are used for hunting foxes and wolves.

Training an eagle to hunt takes a long time. Hunters catch young eagles in nets made of hair. After being trained the eagle is taken to a field. A blindfold over the bird’s eyes keeps it quiet until the hunter is ready.

The eagle sits in the arm of the hunter. The hunter’s arm is covered with a long, special glove to protect it from the sharp claws of the bird. In the field, as soon as the hunter sees a fox or a wolf, he removes the blindfold. The eagle quickly flies into the air and began to look for the wild animal.

The eagle sees the animal and catches it with claws like steel. Its beak and claws are strong enough to hold the animal. Usually, the bird carries the animal back to the hunter. Sometimes fast animals with good eyes can get away.
