11.Being seen in a fancy sports car or enjoying a beach holiday in a five-star hotel were once signs of having"made it".
But a new study suggested that having people think of you as constantly busy and overworked is now a far better way to show social status.
According to Harvard University in the US,people are increasingly leaning toward the phenomenon of"humblebragging (谦虚自夸)".This is when people make a seemingly modest statement that actually draws attention to something they want to brag (吹嘘) about.
Phrases such as"I have no life"and"I desperately need a holiday"are now used to imply social standing, while ordering food and shopping online is the perfect way to prove to neighbors that you are simply too busy and important to go to the supermarket.
"Movies, magazines, and popular TV shows often highlight (强调) the abundance (富足) of money and leisure time among the wealthy,"said Neeru Paharia,an assistant professor at Harvard University.
"In recent years,featuring wealthy people relaxing by the pool or on a yacht (游艇),playing tennis or skiing and hunting are being replaced with advertisements featuring busy individuals who work long hours and have very limited leisure time,"he said."Displaying (how busy you are at work) and a lack of leisure time operates as a visible signal of status in the eyes of others."
The researchers pointed out that the Wall Street Journal's 2016advert campaign featured celebrities (名人) complaining about their busy lives,with the slogan (标语)."People who don't have time,make time to read the Wall Street Journal."
The report,which was published in the Journal of Consumer Research,also found that brands that marketed themselves as timesaving were becoming increasingly high-status,because of the people who used them.
According to the authors,this trend of humblebragging is due to people's shit of focus-they now value"the preciousness und scarcity (稀缺) of individuals"more than"the preciousness and scarcity of goods".
"Busy individuals possess desirable characteristics, leading them to be viewed as scarce and in demand,"the authors concluded.

7.I had often dreamt of the possibility of spending a year away from my hometown of Leeds in England,living in a foreign country.By the time I was old enough,however,I thought that my language was going to hold me back.
However,luckily for me,Leeds University,where I was studying at the time,made it possible for any student,even people like myself speaking only one language,to study abroad.Before I knew it I was boarding a plane for Salzburg,Austria.I wasn't quite sure what to expect of the experience ahead of me but I was prepared to accept the challenge.
The university was quite small but the classes were large.Also,Austrian students usually take five years to complete their courses,so studying was somewhat more relaxed than at home.Austrian students go home quite often,too.Therefore,the foreign students had to socialise with each other quite a lot,which didn't help our language skills.
Salzburg itself is a picture-postcard Austrian city.It is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music.As a result,it is usually very busy with tourists.I also found that it doesn't have a lot going on for young people,in comparison to Leeds.
There were,however,many advantages to living in Salzburg.For example,get on a train and you can be in Prague,Rome or Krakow within a matter of hours.By the end of my year in Salzburg,I had visited eight other countries in Europe.
After spending a year overseas,I went back to my course in Leeds much more focused on what I wanted to get out of my last year and more appreciative of the opportunities (机会) university provides.The year in Salzburg really showed me that you get a lot more out of a place when you live there compared to when you are just travelling through.I'd recommend all students to spend a year studying abroad if they can.

8.Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina.We were there,as mental health professionals,to offer"psychological(心理的) first aid"and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence.As we walked in the gate to the shelter,we were greeted with a burst of gratitude from the first person we met.I felt appreciated,but also guilty,because I hadn't really done anything yet.
I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend's mother passed away unexpectedly.I had received a call saying she had just passed away.I wanted to rush down there immediately,but didn't want to disturb this very personal period of sadness.I was torn about what to do.Another friend with me then said,"Just go.Just be there."I did,and I will never regret it.
Since then,I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others.Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying.He was not awake,and obviously unaware of others'presence.However,the atmosphere was by no means solemn.His family,playing guitars and singing,allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive.
In my life,I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence.In it,none of us are truly alone.It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.
