M: No, I'm sorry, but I have to do my homework. Text 3 W: What would you like to have, sir? M: Well, I'd like to have an apple juice and a chicken sandwich. Text 4 M: Those apples look nice. How much are they W : They are sixty cents a pound . Text 5 M: This reading material is in its original language, Spanish. Do you know anyone who can help me translate it? W: What about the new librarian? I've heard that she's speaking and using two languages. Text 6 W : Don't you have any good news? M: No. Yesterday, I had to stay after school, because I was talking during my biology class. W: You'd better keep quiet in class. M: Sometimes I do. The day before yesterday, I was very quiet during my history class but I still had to stay after class. W: I don't understand. M: Because I fell asleep during the class, but it wasn't my fault. The lesson was very dull. W: I advise you to take school more seriously. If you don't pass your exam, you'll have to drop out and work as a result . M: I don't think that it makes much difference. If I have a job, I have to do dull work every day, but if I'm in school, I must listen to dull teachers every day. Text 7 M: Betty, whose keys are these? I've just found them on my desk. W: They're not mine, Jack. I sew them this morning after Joe left. He probably forgot them . M: Why did he leave so early? Did he have a class? W: No. He said he was going to see the doctor. M: What was the matter? Was he ill`? W: No. When he was playing basketball, he fell and hurt his arm. I'll see Joe in class this afternoon. I'll ask him if the keys are his. M: If they aren't his, maybe they're my uncle's. He brought me some cakes this morning, you know. W : That's right. But he came by car, didn't he? Then how could he get into his car without his keys? M: Well, they must be somebody's. I'm sure he's looking for the keys now. Text 8 W : Who were those two men you were talking to? M : They own a shopping center. W: A shopping center? Where is it? M: It's that new one down the Fleet Avenue, about one mile from here. W: Oh yes, I've heard about it. M: They'd like to have someone open another restaurant in the center. W: You're not thinking of moving the restaurant again, are you? M: No, I'm thinking about opening a branch. W: I've heard that business is quite good there. M : Those men had a study made of the number of people who pass through the center each day, and the result is good. W: Well, why don't we look into it? M: But do you think we'll have enough time to manage another branch? W: We could get George and Jane to manage it. M: Do you think they have enough experience? W: They're old enough. And we've trained them like your parents trained us. M: Let's try it. Text 9 M: Are you ready for the trip to museums in The Big Apple? I can hardly wait. W :The Big Apple? What axe you talking about? M: The Big Apple is the nickname for New York City. You are going to New York with us, aren't you? W: Yes, I'm especially looking forward to seeing the Museum of Modem Art. There's a special show of twentieth century American painters there. But, tell me, where did the nickname The Big Apple come from? M: The jazz musicians of the 1920's are responsible for the name. When they played a concert in a city, they called that city an apple. Of course, New York was the biggest in the country and the best place for a jazz concert. So the musicians called it The Big Apple. Text 10 Most of the material things in our daily life have to be bought with money. But money is rat all powerful. Money cannot buy many things such as time and true love. There are 24 hours in a day. Sometimes when we are very happy, we wish that the period of happiness would last longer. But whatever we do, or however much money we pay, we cannot make the unhappy time pass away more quickly. True love is another thing which money cannot buy. Suppose we lave someone who really loves us very much. Once he dies he can give us no more love. Can our money raise him from death and make him love us as before? Here we can see very clearly that money cannot buy us love. Money can buy us diamond thin, beautiful clothes. But never time and love. So money, after all, is not all powerful. |
