A recent announcement by scientists that they have successfully cloned the first human embryo has caused much debate and has shocked many people around the world. On the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable tissues(组织)and organs that could be used to save human lives. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and fear that if mankind interferes with(干涉)nature in this way, they may be on their way to producing a real-life Frankenstein’s monster.

Cloning is producing an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. The first mammal to be cloned successfully from an adult cell was Dolly the sheep. She was born in 1996 and died in early 2003,at a much younger age than normal. When she was born, many people were angry because they thought cloning would create more disease in the animal world. However,in general the scientists were praised for their wonderful scientific breakthrough.

The Scottish scientist who created Dolly,Ian Wilmut,is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. Although he researches cloning, his intention has never been to create copies of humans. Instead,he thinks research efforts should concentrate on creating new tissues and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer. However, some people consider that cloning human embryos with the intention of destroying them shows no respect for human life.

While cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, some scientists are already pushing ahead with research so as to deliver a cloned human baby. Severino Antinori,an Italian doctor,is one of the leaders in this kind of research. He has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.

In China, scientists have focused their efforts on cloning animals,as well as stern cells to be used in medical research. China has succeeded in producing clones of cows and goats, and continues to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.

A. Cloning technology can only be applied to animals.

B. A cloned animal can live longer than a normal one.

C. People all over the world are happy about the birth of Dolly.

D. Cloning can produce valuable tissues and organs to cure human diseases.

52. The reasons why people are anti-cloning include the following EXCEPT that_______.

A. cloning may produce a real-life Frankenstein’s monster

B. cloning might create more disease in the animal world

C. cloning can’t help those who want to clone their dead children

D. cloning human embryos shows no respect for human life

53. Who is in favor of cloning human beings?

A. Ian Wilmut.        B. Severino Antinori.

C. The author.        D. The Chinese scientists.

54. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A. If we interfere with nature, we will change the world to be what we want.

B. It is impossible to clone babies for women who cannot have ones.

C. Cloning human beings is illegal in many countries,so no scientists want to do so.

D. Whether cloning human embryos is legal or not remains a matter of debate.

We would probably all be amazed if we watched a videotape of ourselves performing basically unconscious acts as we go about the business of the day. These unconscious acts consist of all the little personal habits that we don’t even think about, but definitely should. These are some of the things that present an image of who we are to others, and if we are careless in performing them, this image may well be other than we would like it to be.

Parents who insist that their children practice good manners and habits at home are doing them a great service, for these habits then become lifelong and the natural way they do things. It proves true that their unconscious actions will reflect a well-mannered person.

People who, for example, eat with both arms on the table at home will likely do so when out. Those who are lazy and slow in private will certainly be so in public. Children who are permitted to be disrespectful to their parents will follow suit with other adults, and will, most likely, become adults who are disrespectful of others. This is an area where the saying “practice makes perfect” may be applied.

There is an article about the actress, Audrey Hepburn, known for her beautiful carriage and posture. According to her biographer, her grandmother tied her neck to the back of her chair, at table, so that she would not drop down suddenly over her food, but rather would learn to put only small amounts of food on her spoon or fork and bring them to her mouth. This is a rather extreme “at home” method for the development of erect (直立的) posture, but it does illustrate the effectiveness of practicing good habits so that, when in public, they are instinctive.

1.

Which of the following expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. Parents should be responsible for their children’s good habits.

B. The actress is well known for her beautiful posture.

C. We should always be aware of our manners.

D. Without good manners, one can never be perfect.

2.

Those who eat with both arms on the table at home ______.

A. will probably have the same habit when they have meals in the restaurant

B. will probably change the habit when eating out with their relatives

C. will feel embarrassed when having meals with so many strangers in public[来源:Z&xx&k.Com]

D. will always put their arms on the table no matter where they eat

3.

The meaning of “practice makes perfect” in the third paragraph is ______.

A. the more practice one has, the better job he will do

B. the more perfect one is, the more practice he needs

C. if one has enough practice, he will become perfect

D. perfect makes a person practice more

4.

Which of the following are NOT true?

A. If we are not careful about our unconscious acts, the images of ourselves presented to others will be quite undesirable.

B. The good habits formed in one’s childhood will benefit him throughout his life.

C. If parents do not care about the disrespectful attitude adopted by their children towards themselves, their children might be disrespectful of others.

D. It is unlikely that a well-mannered person will not embarrass himself in public.

In the 13th century, the famous Italian traveler, Marco Polo, traveled a long way to China. During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money. In western countries, people didn’t use the paper money until 15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century.

A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2,000 years ago. He took the wood from trees and made it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book.

Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. Every day, people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting nearly 48,000 trees every day. Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now.

So how can we save paper? We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes. We can use cotton handkerchiefs and not paper ones. When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags. If the shop assistant gives us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later.

Everyone can help to save paper. If we all think carefully, we can help protect trees. But we should do it now, before it is too late.

3. Which of the following is not true?

   A. If we keep on wasting paper, we will have no paper to use one day.

   B. The Chinese used paper money much earlier than people in western countries.

   C. About 48,000 trees can be used to make 2,800 tons of paper.

   D. It is never too late to plant trees for paper.

4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

   A. Saving Paper                       B. The History of Paper

   C. Cotton Handkerchiefs Back Again    D. Cai Lun, the Inventor
