A lot of us lose life's tough battles by starting a frontal (正面的) attack-when a touch of humor might well
enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly
after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for
Sam's being late-serious illness at home-he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer.
His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yet, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room (更衣室); everyone was hard
at work. Sam's supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. "How do
you do!" he said. "I'm Sam Maynard. I'm applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35
minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?"
The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam
Maynard had saved his job-with the only tool that could win, a laugh.
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives.
It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no", criticizing, getting the other fellow to do
what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss
subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on
television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
1. Why was Sam late for his job?
A. Because he was ill.
B. Because he got up late.

A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humor

C. early bird gets the worm
D. humor can solve racial discriminations
3. The phrase "clamped off" in Paragraph 3 means _____.
A. tried to hold back
B. tried to set
C. charged
D. gave out
4. Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage?
A. Many lose life's battles for they are lacking in a sense of humor.

"Good evening, everybody!" said the teacher, Donna. "Where is everybody?" That was sort of a daily
joke by Donna. Usually the class started with only two or three students present, and then filled up as the
minutes went by. It was summertime. Summer school was only eight weeks long. Class attendance was
always smaller than during fall and spring semesters.
"I don't know, teacher. Maybe they late or no come," said one student. "Maybe watching TV football
tonight."
"Is there a soccer game tonight? It seems like there's a soccer game every night. Oh, well. Let's get
started, okay? We're on page 36 in the workbook. Tonight we're studying participles as adjectives. Students
are always confused when they learn about the present and past participles, so we will practice this a lot.
Tonight, we're just going to practice the present participle.
"The present participle tells us what emotion or feeling the subject is causing. For example, 'Grammar
is boring' means that the subject-grammar-causes an emotion of boredom. If we say, 'The movie is
interesting,' we are saying that the movie causes a feeling of interest. If we say, 'The roller coaster is exciting,'
we are saying that the roller coaster causes a feeling of excitement. Any questions so far? Am I confusing
you? Is everyone confused?"
The classroom was quiet. Donna looked at blank faces. They were confused. She knew this would take
a while. But eventually, the faster students would grasp it, and then they would help the slower students. By
the end of the evening, most of the class would feel comfortable using the present participle.
Donna erased the board and put some new examples on it. She loved guiding her students through difficult
topics like this one. She always felt a little bit thrilled when the look of understanding came to their faces.
1. What do you think the class is about?
A. Going over homework.
B. English grammar.
C. Football.

2. We can infer from the first paragraph that _____ in summer time.
A. some students are often late for school
B. some students often watch football games with the teacher
C. more students often ask for leave
D. more students often go to school
3. The underlined work "blank" probably means _____.
A. excited
B. interested
C. confused
D. pleased
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Donna was experienced in teaching English grammar.

A Spring Festival
Water-Sprinkling Festival, which comes in mid-April, is the new year of the Dai ethnic people (傣族人)
in southwest China's Yunnan Province. In face of the recent serious drought disaster, there have been calls
for calling off this year's festival celebrations.
Droughts and floods are not new things. Still, the Water-Sprinkling Festival keeps going on year by year.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This
kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for
years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary (暂时的). This is the most common type. It usually disappears
quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result
or a particular situation-for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place.
Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually
does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (长期的) loneliness usually
last more than two yeas and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems
socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lone people think there is little or
nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists (心理学家) agree that one important fact in loneliness is a person's social contacts, e.g,
friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance,
our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar
interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lone people may have many social
contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy
and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart
disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness
can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

While all my classmates seem to be crazy about a one-way ticket to Mars (火星), I'd rather say Mars is
totally unsuitable for human existence. People won't have enough food supplies there, and the terrible
environment would make it impossible for them to live a long life. Besides, the journey won't be safe. Can
anybody explain to me just why people would go to Mars, never to return?
     Steve Minear, UK
Here are the things you can think of: the desire to explore a foreign and unique environment, the excitement
of being the first humans to open up a new world, the expectation of fame and glory…For scientists there is
another reason. Their observations and research will probably lead to great scientific achievements.
     Donal Trollop, Canada
There are already too many people on the Earth. I think that sometime before the end of the century, there
will be a human colony (殖民地) on Mars. It will happen when people finally realize that two-way trips to the
red planet Mars are unnecessary. Most of the danger of space flight is in the launches (发射) and landings.
Cutting the trip home would therefore reduce the danger of accidents, save a lot of money, and open the way
to building an everlasting human settlement on another world.
Enough supplies can be sent on ahead. And every two years more supplies and more people will be sent to
the new colony. Mars has all the materials for a colony to produce or make everything it needs, and Mars is
far more pleasant than the other planets in the outer space.
     Paul Davies. USA
1. The main purpose of Steve Minear's writing is _____.
A. to report his classmates' discussion
B. to invite an answer to his question

A. There is a plan to send humans to Mars.
B. There are many reasons for going to Mars.
C. Scientists become famous by doing research on Mars.
D. It is possible to build an Earth-like environment on Mars.
3. Paul Davies points out that _____.
A. humans need only a one-way ticket to Mars
B. two-way trips to Mars will be made safe soon
C. it is easy to reduce the danger and cost of flights to Mars
D. it is cheap to build an everlasting human settlement on Mars
4. What does Paul Davies think of human existence on Mars?
A. Humans will have to bring all they need from the Earth.
B. Humans will find Mars totally unsuitable for living.
C. Humans can produce everything they need.
D. Humans can live longer in the colony on Mars.
