11.My daughter and myself were driving from Los Angeles to Dallas.We were running low on gas on our way to Roswell and figured we'd see a gas station soon enough to fill up.But that didn't happen and we realized we were not going to make it to the next town.So my daughter made up a sign that read"Low on gas.Can u help?"and held it outside her window hoping that a driver in the next lane (车道) would notice it and stop.
It was about 3:30pm and there weren't too many vehicles passing us.An SUV was driving along in the neighboring lane ahead of us.We caught up with it in the hope that the driver would notice the sign.An elderly gentleman was driving it and after a brief expression of confusion on his face,he seemed to have noticed the sign and slowed down to pull over.
He was friendly and was eager to help us.At first he thought we didn't have enough money to buy gas,so he offered to buy us gas at the next town Roswell that was about 10miles away!!When we explained our situation of not having enough gas to get to Roswell,he said he worked on a farm and was returning home from work.The farm was about 10minutes away and they had a gas pump there.So if we could give him twenty minutes,he would head back there,get gasoline and fill up our tank (油箱).
We could not believe our good fortune!We had just hoped that whoever stopped to help would be kind enough to call AAA when they got to Roswell as there was no cell phone for either of us.And we would just wait it out for them to come and help us.
We were grateful for the kindness of strangers such as this person as we waited for him to return.Sure enough,he was back and immediately filled our tank.He refused to take payment for the gas saying"what good is a man who cannot help another in need".Tears flowed,as did our gratitude.

1.Decisions,decisions!Our lives are full of them,from the small ones to the life-changing.The right to choose is central to everyone.Yet sometimes we make bad decisions that leave us unhappy or full of regret.Can science help?
Most of us know little about the mental processes that lie behind our decisions.Luckily,what psychologists are finding may help us all make better choices.Here are some of their amazing discoveries to help you make up your mind.
Consider your emotions.You might think that emotions are the enemy of decision making,but in fact they're a part of it.Whenever you make up your mind,your brain's emotional center is active.University of Southern California scientist,Antonio Damasio,has studied people with damage to only the emotional parts of their brains,and found that they were unable to make basic choices about what to wear or eat.Damasio thinks this may be because our brains store emotional memories of past choices,which we use to help the present decision making.
However,making choices under the influence of an emotion can greatly affect the result.Take anger,for example.A study by Nitika Garg of the University of Mississippi and other scientists found the angry shoppers were more likely to choose the first thing they were offered rather than consider other choices.It seems anger can lead us to make quick decisions without much thinking.
All emotions affect our thinking and motivation(动机),so it may be best to avoid making important decisions under their influence.Yet strangely there's one emotion that seems to help us make good choices.The American researchers found that sad people took time to consider the various choices on offer,and ended up making the best choices.In fact many studies show that people who feel unhappy have the most reasonable view of the world.

16.A Koala Isn't a Bear
Koalas remind people of teddy bears.They have thick fur and large ears.Their broad,flat nose makes them look cute,similar to teddy bears.In fact koalas aren't cute.They have sharp teeth and very sharp claws!Koalas are marsupials.This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops,similar to a kangaroo.The baby koala lives in its mother's pocket for the first six months of its life.
The name"koala"comes from a native Australian word that means"no drink."The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus(桉树) leaves they eat.That's where they get their food too.Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves,and only the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees.The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live.It's also where they sleep.Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!
Why do they sleep so much?Some people think it's because they're lazy.But koalas aren't lazy.They sleep so much because there isn't much nutrition in eucalyptus leaves.Koalas store hardly any fat,so they must save their energy.One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot.
After a day of sleeping they like to move around and eat just after sunset.They live alone most of the time.Koalas are very protective of their trees.If a koala sees another koala eating in its favorite tree,it might tell the other koala to leave by"barking"at it.Koalas do"talk"to each other.Besides barks,the males make a deep grunting sound.The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds.If they get scared they may scream like a baby.

1.The US and UK share a great amount of pop culture phenomenon.However.despite their many similarities,there are huge cultural differences between these two countries.The following are some ways that Americans offend Brits.and vice versa.without knowing it.
In both the UK and US.a V sign made with the index(食指) and middle finger pointing up and the palm facing outwards is known as"V for Victory.It is also the peace sign.In Britain.this same sign with the palm facing inwards is very rude.But for Americans.it simply doesn't mean anything at all.
The ward"Quite"seems to be a common word.Americans use it,Brits use it.so it must be the same,right?Well no,not quite.An American guest may upset her UK hosts by describing their dinner as"quite good".In British English,"quite good"only means pretty good or fairly good-in other words.the meal was passable but could have been better.But in American English.it's much more positive."Quite good"means very good.
Brits exchange good-natured insults ( 调侃)  because they're too conservative and emotionally reserved to say how they really feel.The stronger their friendship is,the more they can make fun of each other and still come away with a warm feeling.But this is not how Americans socialize.Tell a US friend he's an idiot( 白痴),and you likely won't get invited to his wedding.
When Brits meet foreigners.they're not always as welcoming as they should be.Americans in particular can take this the wrong way-they say that the British are known for being cold and unfriendly.For Americans.looking shocked when someone says to you"Hi!How are you today?"instead of immediately responding with equal enthusiasm.is seen as rude.
