Why I Don't Spare “Spare Change”

“Poor but honest.” “The deserving(值得帮助的)poor.” These words always come to my mind when I think of “the poor.” But I also think of people who, perhaps through alcohol or drugs, have ruined not only their own lives but also the lives of others in order to give way to their own pleasure.Perhaps alcoholism and drug addiction really are “diseases,” as many people say, but my own feeling——based, of course, not on any serious study——is that most alcoholics and drug addicts belong to the “undeserving poor.” And that is largely why I don't give spare change to beggars.

But surely among the street people there are also some who can rightly be called “deserving.” Deserving what?My spare change?Or simply the government's assistance? It happens that I have been brought up to believe that it is proper to make contributions to charity, but if I give some change to a beggar, am I making a contribution to charity and thereby helping someone, or, am I perhaps simply encouraging someone not to get help?Or, maybe even worse, am I supporting a cheat?

If one believes in the value of private charity, one can either give to needy people or to charitable organizations. In giving to a beggar one may indeed be helping a person who badly needs help, but one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy person. In giving to an organization, on the other hand, one can feel that one's money is likely to be used wisely.True, facing a beggar one may feel that this particular unfortunate person needs help at this moment——a cup of coffee or a sandwich——and the need will not be met unless I put my hand in my pocket right now.But I have come to think that the beggars whom I meet can get along without my spare change, and indeed perhaps they are actually better off for not having money to buy alcohol or drugs.

I know nothing about these beggars, but it's my impression that they simply prefer begging to working.I am not generalizing about street people.I am talking about the people whom I actually meet. That's why I do not give “spare change,” and I don't think I will in the future.

[1] I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our
conversation.There we were,walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day.But I became invisible,absent
from the conversation.
[2] The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you  feel
absent.Recently I was in a car with three friends. The driver told us to be quiet because he could not hear
the person on the other end of his cell phone. There we were, four friends going down the highway, unable
to talk to one another because of a tool designed to make  communication easier.
[3] Why is it that the more connected we get,____________?Every advance in  communications
technology is a hurt to the closeness of human interaction (互动). With email and instant messaging over
the Internet,we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can
conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone.

[5] So I've put myself on technology restriction:no instant messaging with people who live near me,no
cellphoning in the presence of friends,no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm home.

Today,I read an interesting article about television viewing. In one experiment, families were paid to stop watching TV for either a week or a month. Many could not complete the task and some families quarrelled or even fought. It was quite interesting and now I will say something about TV.
After TV became a product most families could afford, people bought and started to watch their new
TVs.Both adults and children became less creative in problem solving, less able to focus on tasks, and less
tolerant of flexible time.
In my family,we grew up with the TV on.Every weekend,we watched Gun Smoke and Bonanza
together as a family.TV provides us with a comfortable background when we want to learn a foreign
language at home, and it entertains us cheaply with live action sports, incomparable performing arts and
important events of the world. In addition,it educates us about everything from the cells in our body to the
galaxies in the universe.
Perhaps it's not even practical to live without television unless our views change unexpectedly as we get older.I don't think that TV damages us so much as it robs us of time that could be spent doing other things such as learning new skills, getting some exercise or doing volunteer work.
I was lucky to have a family that watched TV together.Today there seems to be a TV in every room of the house and there's no need to agree on a program to watch. To watch TV or not is more of a question
for adults than for us,and even though we all say we want to cut down the time we spend in front of the
tube,we never really do.TV_has_us_hypnotized!
1. The experiment in Paragraph 1 shows________.
A. how interesting watching TV is

A. got more active at work
B. found it easier to solve problems
C. became more independent of TV
D. fixed less attention on tasks

A. the author likes to spend weekends watching TV by himself
B. watching TV too much prevents the author from growing up well
C. TV programmes bring only fun to the author and his family

A. It is a waste of time to watch TV.
B. We benefit little when we watch TV.

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year - round sun. You may think people in
such an attractive, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken
ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still think fun equals happiness. The truth is that fun and happiness
have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is
what we experience after an act. It is a deep, long-lasting emotion.
Going to an amusement park or a ball game, watching a movie or television are fun
activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But
they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that
happiness has nothing to do with fun. They have constant access to exciting parties, fancy
cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness". But in memoir(回忆录)after
memoir, they expose the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism,
drug addiction, broken marriages and loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less
satisfying. If he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For
commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement.
Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun
over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want.
Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night' s sleep. I don't know any parent who
would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the
most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more
hours to activities that can truly increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new
car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless.
And it frees us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and famous people we were
so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

1. What is the passage mainly about?_____
A. Fun and happiness.
B. Success and satisfaction.
C. Marriage and commitment.
D. Entertainment and responsibility.
2. The author probably agrees that _____.
A. fun creates long - lasting satisfaction
B. long - standing fun may lead to happiness
C. fun is short-lived while happiness is long-lasting
D. fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness
3. What does the author think of marriage?______
A. It ends in pain.
B. It means commitment.
C. It affords greater fun.
D. It leads to raising children.
4. If one gets the real meaning of happiness, he ______.
A. will start a business
B. won't place too much value on money
C. will seek for freedom
D. won't devote himself to his family
