Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Li Hua. a student in Grade 3. I have read the notice that our school radio station needs two English announcers, so I’m writing to introduce myself.

First of all, I am greatly interested in broadcasting. I have received some professional training in my spare time, hoping that I can work as an announcer in the future. Besides, I am good at English, and won the first prize in the English Speech Competition last year. So I think I am highly qualified for the job. If I am admitted, I will try my best to serve the students. I sincerely hope that you can give me a chance to work for the school radio station.

I am looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

I have read the notice that our school radio station needs two English announcers使用了that领导的同位语从句;第二段第二 I have received some professional training in my spare time, hoping that I can work as an announcer in the future.使用了非谓语动词做伴随状语;第二段倒数第二句If I am admitted, I will try my best to serve the students. Besides, I am good at English, and won the first prize in the English Speech Competition last year.

Advertising is a highly developed twentieth-century industry. The development of radio, television, cinema, magazines and newspapers has gone hand in hand with the development of advertising. Why is advertising so popular? Is it a waste of money? It has been proved again and again that repeated advertising increases product sales. Since it increases production, the price can be reduced. Therefore advertising, instead of making a product more expensive, makes it cheaper.

Advertising is now a scientific business. Once managers would say jokingly,“I know thathalf of what I spend on advertising is wasted, but I don’t know which half.”Now, all parts of an advertising program are properly measured and researched.

What makes a good advertisement? There have been major changes in advertising in the pastsixty years. People read advertisements partly for information and partly for pleasure. Today’s advertisements often start with a question, or a puzzle, with the purpose of attracting the reader’s attention. Of course, most advertisements contain information. But this is usually contained in a text that is interesting and often funny. Humor is very important. Sometimes advertisements tell a story, or the story may be continued over a number of advertisements. However, there is a danger in this. It is possible that the reader or viewer will remember the advertisement but not the name ofthe product.

London Underground

The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. Autumn blues? Let the sunshine in falling leaves, flowers, and cold winds. For many people late autumn can be a season of depression.

Those who suffer from “the autumn blue” are often extremely tired, lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight. “The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder(SAD), is not known yet,” says Chen Jue, associate professor at Shanghai Mental Health Center. “But recent studies show that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability(得到)of sunlight.”

One theory is that with decreased exposure(曝露) to sunlight, the biological clock that regulates mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. Exposure to light may reset the biological clock. Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit(传送) information between nerves, called neurotransmitters (for example, serotonin), may be altered in individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances. “It is a sad season, but you can try to make it happy. Remember, spring always lives in your heart ,” Chen says. “Going outdoors to get some sunlight may reduce the tension that brings you the low spirits. Relax at work. Stretch, breathe deeply. Take a tea break. Think of your next vacation. Color treatment also works in handling low mood. Music also plays a role in treating autumn blues.”
