【题目】An artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.

Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses to the homeless on the street. On a recent day, Mr. Kloehn stops to visit his homeless friends. One of them is Oscar Young. The two men hug when they see each other. Inside his little shelter Mr. Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr. Kloehn also visits Sweet-Pea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings.

In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device(装置) to the house. The device is powered by the sun.

Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.

Mr. Kloehn says his work is not a social project. He says he is just someone using his skills to help his homeless neighbors.

D.How to evaluate student performance

F.Communication skills play a big role in language learning

Both instructors and learners can get benefits from the following learning strategies as long as they are properly made use of in language learning.

【1 .

The information presented in this section focuses on specific conversation, discussion, or presentation skills. The activities arc generally self-explanatory, with students expressing opinions, making decisions, solving problems, planning presentations, and so on.Engaged in these activities, students have the possibility of communicating with each other in class. This section also includes lists of expressions used to illustrate different language functions, such as agreeing, disagreeing, and asking for clarity in order to help students expand their knowledge of English.

【2 .

In a speaking or listening course, students' anxieties can affect their learning. For this reason, it is important to establish a friendly, relaxed classroom environment. It may help students think of the classroom as a laboratory where they can experiment and take risks with the language. In such circumstances, students should realize that errors are a natural and expected part of learning a language. In addition, one of the goals of this pan is to encourage students to examine their own opinions and values while at the same time showing respect for the opinions and values of others.

【3】________.

Many of the activities in this section involve the students' cooperating work in class. Generally, such an activity taken up by four members seem to work the best. Groups of three or five members may also be effective, depending on the activity. The first unit includes guidelines for organizing group work, with students taking on the following roles: leader, reader, summarizer, reporter, and observer (if necessary). Organizing all activities in this way makes the course truly learner-centered since students must take full responsibility for carrying out each activity. As for seating, group members should arrange their seats or chairs in a small circle to encourage interaction.

【4】________.

Being a teacher, in the course of group activities, you should circulate from group to group, which helps ensure that students are on task and are using English. While you should not participate in pair or group activities, you need to stay involved in what the students are doing. One important reason to circulate during activities is to keep track of the kinds of problems students have, such as grammatical accuracy, fluency, word choice, pronunciation and intonation discussion strategies, etc. However, it is generally not effective to correct students' errors when they are involved in an activity The most practical way to deal with communication problems is to make notes of what you observe as you are circulating. You can then use this information to provide feedback after the activity or to develop future lessons.

【5】________.

At the beginning of the course, when they need to build up their confidence, students benefit most from encouragement and positive comment. If possible, you'd rather not grade the students just few efforts at speaking in a group or to the class. Many students suffer such anxiety in speaking situations that any criticism at this stage can have the opposite effects. Commenting on students' work does not necessarily mean grading them on the scene. Even if the programs require formal grades, you should try to put off assigning grades until later in the term.

【题目】In China, cultural differences arose from growing rice or wheat.Different thinking styles between northern and southern Chinese people can trace(追溯)their roots to rice fields and wheat fields.

Rice farming promotes a holistic(整体的)focus on distinguishing relationships among people and objects, and valuing others as much as or more than oneself, say psychologist Thomas Talhelm of the University of Virginia and his colleagues.Holistic thinking among many modem Chinese people partly reflects regional histories of building communal irrigation systems(共有灌溉系统)and cooperatively planting and harvesting rice fields over thousands of years.

They draw that conclusion based on studies of college students from regions with different agricultural practices.Students from southern and central China’s rice.growing provinces think holistically, even though they have probably never farmed rice,Talhelm’s group reports. In contrast, students from northern and central Chinese provinces that have specialized in wheat growing exhibit a preference for abstract analysis and self over others, the scientists find.Wheat is less labor-intensive(劳动密集型)to grow than rice,SO farmers can plant and harvest crops without much help from neighbors.Analytical, individualistic thinking is not more common among students from richer

Provinces, contrary to the argument that this attitude springs from modernization. ”Rice theory might explain why East Asia is so much less individualistic than expected based on its wealth, Talhelm says.

Talhelms team tested 1,162 Chinese students, who Viewed lists of three items, such as a rabbit,a dog and a carrot. For each list, students chose two items that belonged together. Earlier research found that analytical thinkers often group items according to categories,so rabbits and dogs go together.Holistic thinkers tend to 1ook for relationships, such as rabbits eating carrots. Students from rice-growing areas made an average of around seven to nine holistic matches of 10 possible matches, compared with roughly f1ve to seven holistic matches for those from Wheat-growing areas.

Talhelm’s team also analyzed national statistics in China from 1 996,2000 and 2010 and found a higher divorce rate and a greater number of successful patents for new inventions in wheat-growing provinces than in rice-growing provinces. That trend is in line with the ides that analytical thinking develops both individualism and creativity.
