Earth is the third planet from the sun.It is one of the four inner planets. The other three inner planets are Mercury,Venus, and Mars. The inner planets are also called the rocky planets, because they are made of rocks.

Earth is often called the “Water Planet”,because it is the only planet in our solar system which has liquid water on its surface.About 70% of the surface of Earth is covered by water! The other part of Earth is made up of continents and islands which have different landforms on them.Examples of landforms are mountains and plains.Plants and animals can live on Earth, because it has so much water.

Earth spins very quickly compared to other planets. It only takes Earth 24 hours to spin around its axis one time. One Earth day is 24 hours long!Earth orbits the sun in 365 days! This makes one Earth year 365 days long!

Earth is the only planet in our solar system where humans, other animals, and plants can live. There is plenty of water to drink or to live in.Water is present on Earth in its big oceans and in the air! Clouds are made of water vapor. The atmosphere has a lot of oxygen in it for animals to breathe, but the rest of our “air” is made up of water vapor, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. The air is perfect for plants to grow.Earth temperature is not the same in all places, but the temperature is just right for plants, animals, and humans in most places on Earth.

Like the other inner planets,Earth has volcanoes.Volcanoes on Earth are different from those on other planets, because they still erupt.Scientists think that there may be active volcanoes on other planets and moons in our solar system, but they are still studying this.

Earth has one planet which we call the Moon. The surface of the Moon has many craters on it These were caused when meteorites hit it.It has many volcanoes on it which do not erupt anymore. We can see the moon at night without using a telescope. It is the closest space object to our planet,Earth.

Earth is called the Water Planet,______.

A.because animals need water

B.the water makes it look blue from space

C.it has liquid water on its surface

D.Earth is the third planet from the sun

It takes Earth ______to orbit the sun in one year.

A.24 hours                 B.24 days                   C.365 days                 D.360 days

Life exists on Earth,______.

A.because the water, air, and temperature are just right

B.there is water vapor in clouds

C.Earth is the planet closest to the sun

D.earth has volcanoes

The surprising experiment I am about to describe proves that air is all aroud you and that it proves down upon you.Air pressure is a wonderful force. When you swim underwater, you can feel water push down your body. The air all around you does the same. However, your body is so used to it that you do not notice this .The pressure is caused by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This layer surrounds the Earth , extending to about five kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

The following experiment is an easy one that you can do at home. But make sure that you are supervised , because you will need to use matches. Now for the experiment!

What you need

·A hard-boiled egg without the shell

·A bottle with a neck slightly smaller than the egg

·A piece of paper

·A match

Metheod

1) Check that the egg will sit firmly on the neck of the bottle.

2) Tear the paper into strips and put the strips into the bottle.

3) Light the paper by dropping a burning match into the bottle.

4) Quickly sit the egg on the neck of the bottle.

Result

Astonishingly, the egg will be sucked into the bottle.Your friends will be amazed when you show them the experiment. But be careful when you handle matches.

Why it happened

As the paper burns,it needs oxyen and uses up the oxygen(air) in the bottle. The egg acts as a seal in the neck of the bottle,so no more air can get inside .This reduces the air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure must equalize,so more air from outside must enter the bottle. The outside air pressure against the egg and then the egg is pushed into the bottle! The proves that air is all around and that it is pressing down on it.

53.When you do the experiment, why need you a person beside you?

A.You couldn’t place the egg on the bottle by yourself.

B.The egg needs to be shelled.

     C.You need to use matches.

D.The bottle can’t sit firmly on the desk.

54.The purpose of doing this experiment is to prove ______.

A.air pressure is a wonderful force

B.water can push down your body when you swim underwater

C.the air pressure is not equalized around us

D.the earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere

55.How did the egg put into the bottle?

A.The oxygen inside the bottle suckde the egg in.

B.It became solt without the shell.

C.The neck of the bottle was wide enough.

D.The outside air pressure forced it into the bottle.

56.The passage is ______.

A.an experiment report            B.a scientific story

C.a research report                  D.an interesting novel

Not long ago the movie 2012 came into screen. The people were threatened by those scenes of destroying flood, severe earthquake, terrifying hurricane and constructions representing human civilization being destroyed and even swallowed by disaster.Luckily, they are just the director' s imagination, but the present situation is not heading a positive direction, either.
Take my own experience in Alaska as an example.Once I took a trip to the glacier.Along the way there stood signposts marking the snow lines of different years. They started from the foot of the mountain, but it was at the top that I finally saw melting glaciers(融化的冰川).My heart ached seeing the beautiful blue ice melting at every second.
Sad but true, they are the effects of global warming and the result of our human impact.Furthermore, each year the rising sea level will kill 56 million people, and that' s about the population of the entire Italy.According to studies, if the temperature keeps on rising like this, by the year 2050, some islands and coastal cities including New York, Shanghai, Tokyo and Sydney will be drowned in water.
Our fortune is in our own hands. It depends on us to shape our future, to reduce future human impact and find ways to form a peaceful relationship with our environment. Therefore, it's time for actions to be taken right now.Contribute a little to energy saving by using more efficient light bulbs and less hot water.Let recycle become our habit by thinking twice before throwing something away.Let us take public transportation as our first choice when going to a certain place. It might cost more time for now, but it' s to the benefit of a permanent future.Take care of every tree and grass around us by watering them or simply just avoid destroying them.
In a word, small drops of water make a big ocean The earth does not belong to us.On the contrary, we belong to the earth. Please bear in mind that the earth is our home.It is our responsibility to build a brighter and better future of our planet and prevent what happened in the movie 2012 from becoming reality.

The earth is the only planet that scientists are certain has life .What does the earth have that the other planets don’t ? For one thing , the earth has just the right temperature . As the third planet from the sun , the earth seems to be just the right distance away . The planets that are closer to the sun are so hot that their surfaces bake in the sun . The farthest planets are cold balls .
When the earth developed— which scientists believe may have happened about billions of years ago , many gases covered the earth . The gases caused the earth to be hot . But something wonderful happened . The temperature was just right for thick clouds to form . It rained very hard for a very long time . This gave the earth its oceans . Water made it possible for plants to grow . The plants created oxygen in the atmosphere . Oxygen is the gas that humans and animals breathe .
Only one other planet in the solar system seems to be something like the earth . That planet is Mars . Mars is smaller than the earth , and it is quite a bit cooler . But it is not too cold for humans . On some days , the temperatures are as cold as a winter day in the northern United States . If you wore a special spacesuit , you could walk around on Mars . You would have to bring your own air to breathe , though . The air on Mars is too thin to breathe . Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system . It is sixteen miles high . The highest volcano on the earth is five miles high . The most unexpected sight on Mars is dried-up river beds . Scientists believe that Mars was once much wetter that it is now . Does this mean there could have been living things on Mars ? Scientists are not sure , but there has been no sign so far .

The Middle East countries and other world powers have been facing major political tensions (紧张) which have made the stability (稳定) of the oil prices very unforeseeable. Each day the prospect (前景) of oil prices has become more and more unclear.
Water fuel has been developed as an alternative (替代) source of fuel which has fast become popular around the world. This exciting technology has various advantages. More than 70 percent of the Earth is covered with water and this fuel source does not produce any harmful pollutants or dangerous emissions either. They in fact also double the mileage of the cars that are powered by them.
Water fuel technology has been known to be the best additional form of fuel source for petrol (汽油) or other fuel sources. However, any say that this technology can be only an additional source and not a replacement is totally incorrect and misleading. Such ideas have been suggested by those who look down on this technology. On the contrary, this technology has numerous benefits such as it does not produce any harmful emissions which can affect the climatic changes. It further helps to reduce the level of noise produced by the engines.
Various researches reflect that running costs on fuels for automobiles can be easily saved up to 40 percent with the help of water cell technology. This technology can easily work on various cars powered by gas. It can also be used for trucks, vans and other vehicles. The tap water can also be easily used directly and you do not need any special water that is specifically treated to be used for this purpose. You can easily find a lot of details so that you can adapt your car to use the technology.
