Text 2 M:I hear you are playing at a concert tomorrow. How do you feel about it? W:Oh, I'm really worried about it. M:I'm not surprised. So would I be. Text 3 W:I have run out of money. M:How much money do you need? W:Ten pounds. No, eight will be enough. Text 4 M:Would you mind closing the windows? I feel terribly cold. W:Why don't you put on more clothes? Text 5 W:I'll send Mary a postcard from Hawaii when I get there on my vacation. M:I am sure that she'd be glad to get one. She has a collection of cards from all over the world. Text 6 W:I'm tired of sitting on packing cases, Joe. Don't you think we should buy at least two chairs? M:Do you know how much new chairs cost? One cheap comfortable armchair… eighty pounds. W:Yes, I know. It's terrible. But I have an idea. Why don't we look for chairs at a street market? I've always wanted to see one. M:All right. Which one shall we go to? W:Portobel Road, I think. There are a lot of second-hand things there. But we'll have to go tomorrow. It's only open on Saturdays. M:What time do you want to go? Not too early, I hope. W:The guidebook says the market is open from nine to six. It's a very popular market so we'd better be there when it opens. M:Right. Then I'll set the alarm. Text 7 M:Do you want your TV set repaired? W:Yes, but not by the place you suggested. M:Why not? The repairmen are skillful and the charges are so reasonable. W:That may be, but I couldn't find it. M:But you couldn't miss it. I told you the first right after the railroad bridge. W:I took that. I went to the end of the road. There's no such place. M:Wait a minute. Perhaps, it's the second right. Yes, I think it is. W:I should have known that. Whenever someone says “You can't miss it”, you can be sure that you won't find it. Text 8 W:Good evening, sir. I'm Assistant Manager. I'm afraid we've had a complaint about the noise from your neighbour who's trying to get some sleep. M:Oh, I see. W:Could you please ask your friends to be a little quieter so that our guests can get a good night's sleep? M:Oh, I'm so sorry. I suppose we were talking rather loudly. We won an important prize. We were having a bit of a celebration. W:I'm pleased to hear it. Shall I have some coffee brought to you? M:No, that won't be necessary. We were just about to pack up anyway. Text 9 W:Can I help you? M:Yes, I'm looking for a flat. W:To buy or to rent? M:Oh, to rent. W:How much do you want to pay? M:About two hundred a month. W:Well, I've got one here in Sydney Road. It's two hundred and fifty a month. M:How big is it? W:It has a kitchen, a bathroom and one bedroom. M:Well, actually, I'd prefer something a bit bigger if that's possible. W:Yes, I think so. Here's an interesting one. It's opposite the park. M:How much is it? W:It's three hundred a month. It's the biggest flat we've got in this area. M:What's it like? W:Well, there are two bedrooms, a sitting room, a kitchen and a bathroom. M:It sounds very interesting. Can I go and see it? W:Of course, sir. Can I have your name and address? Text 10 Few people would even think of beginning a new job at the age of 76, but one of America's most famous artists did just that. Anna Mary Robertson, better known as “Grandma Moses”, turned to painting because she was too old to work on her farm. Grandma Moses painted carefully and her works were nice. She first painted only to please herself, and then began to sell her works for a little money. In 1939, a collector, Louis Caldor happened to see several of Grandma Moses' works hanging in a shop. He liked them, bought them at once, and set out to look for more. Caldor held a show to introduce the works of Grandma Moses to other artists. Grandma Moses died on December 13, 1961, at the age of 101. She was world famous. |
