More American Fathers Stay Home to Raise Kids

Families in the U. S. are changing. 【1 This number is twice that of 25 years ago. In 2012, 16 percent of all parents in the U. S. were stay-at-home dads. Gretchen Livingston is with the Pew Research Center. She says in the last 25 years there have been changes as far as dads taking on more caregiving responsibilities and mothers taking on more bread-winner responsibilities. 2 That is a huge change. The study finds that disability, sickness and unemployment are among the reasons that fathers stay home. 3 For example, Blake Humphreys has also been a stay-at-home dad for the past ten years. Blake and his partner have two kids. Blake is a big, muscular man. He is well over six feet tall, with a beard and long hair tucked under his baseball cap. He looks like the kind of man that would be hard to frighten. 4 "I am a stay-at-home dad for ten years. And I know that just saying it sounds scary to me right now." Blake became a stay-at-home parent for the same reason many women do he made less money than his partner. Even thought the number of stay-at-home fathers is growing in the U. S., such men can still face worries about their self-worth. 5 To help solve this problem, he volunteers at his children’s school partly to battle that isolation and to build up his sense of self-worth.

A. But, some fathers do so simply to spend more time with their children.

B. Blake shared his feeling of anxiety.

C. A new study finds that in the U. S. more than two million fathers are staying home to take care of the house and family.

D. A lot of men lost their jobs

E. However, he says he does feel fearful when he counts the years he has been out of the workforce.

F. She adds that the number of hours a day that dads spend caring for their kids has tripled in the past decades.

G. Black expressed his true feeling towards being a stay-at-home dad.

【1】C

【2】F

【3】A

【4】E

【5】B

More American Fathers Stay Home to Raise Kids. Families in the U. S. are changing.

She says in the last 25 years....... responsibilities可知越来越多的父亲承担起照顾孩子的责任,越来越多的妻子承担起挣钱养家的责任。

The study finds that disability.... fathers stay home. 所以A项“some fathers do so simply to spend more time with their children.”

I am a stay-at-home dad for ten years. And I know that just saying it sounds scary to me right now." 所以E项“However, he says he does feel fearful when he counts the years he has been out of the workforce.”

Even thought.....worries about their self-worth. B项“Blake shared his feeling of anxiety”的内容恰好与此一致。故B正确。

The Bowler family had a very unusual experience this year. It was one of more than 400 families who applied to 1900 house, a reality TV show which took a typical family back a hundred years to see how people lived in the days before the internet, computer games and even electricity.

The Bowler family spent three months in a London home without a telephone, computers, TV, or fast food. The bowlers wore clothes from 1900, ate only food available in England at that time, and cooked their meals on a single stove. Paul Bowler still went to work every day in a then uniform. The children changed their clothes on the way to and from school and their classmates didn’t know about their unusual home life. Joyce stayed at home, cooking and cleaning like a typical housewife of the time, though everything took three times as long.

So does Joyce think that people’s lives were better in the old days?

“I think people in the old days had just as many troubles and worries,” Joyce said. “And I don’t think their life was better or worse, there were lots of things back then that I’m happy I don’t have to deal with nowadays, but on the other hand life was simpler.” “We had a lot more time with our family, and it was hard being nice to each other all the time,” eleven-year-old Hilary said.

So what did the Bowler family miss most about modern life while living in the 1900 house?

Today, young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostel and get to know each other. When young people arrive at the hostel, they have only to show their cards of membership in a hostel organization in their own country. 4

How to Study Smarter, Not Harder

Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:

Recite As You Study

Reciting—saying things out loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.

Take Fuller Notes

Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.

Study the Middle

The best time to review is soon after you’ve learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.

Sleep On It

Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It’s easier to remember material you’ve just learned before sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you’ve fallen asleep.

Combine Memory and Understanding

There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding.

The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.

【1】You can notice your mistakes by ________.

A. saying things out aloud

B. taking notes

C. studying the middle

D. sleeping on it

【2】When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading.

A. underline important notes

B. write notes in your own words

C. take down every detail

D. write as quickly as possible

【3】The writer advises you to ________ as it is easier for you to remember material.

A. study after a period of activity

B. do some exercise after studying

C. study as soon as you get up

D. study before going to sleep

【4】Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?

A. Thinking about an idea in different ways.

B. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.

C. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.

D. Going back to what first made you confused and start again.
