题目内容

15.Measuring up to 10.5 feet in length, the western green mamba (曼巴蛇) is the second longest snake in Africa, with the black mamba being the first. It is also the most agile (敏捷的) snake in the mamba family.Their color is changeable, which helps them join their environment.Another distinctive feature of the snake is its long tail with a sharp point.
The western green mamba lives in rain forests.Being an arboreal species, these snakes spend most of their time moving among the tree tops. However, they usually leave their trees to pursue a potential meal on the ground. The western green mamba is mostly active at day,but can also be seen hunting at night.
The diet of a western green mamba consists of birds and a variety of small mammals such as squirrels, mice and even bats. These snakes will approach their targets with the help of their natural skin color. When they are close enough, they will bite their victims and inject them with venom(毒液) quickly.Once the target has died, the weatern green mamba will swallow its meal whole. If faced with danger, these snakes will try to run away.If they are cornered, however, they will become extremely aggressive and strike with their sharp teeth repeatedly. The female weatern green mamba is the one who lays eggs. She will lay eggs anywhere. The young snakes are completely independent. The mother and father play no part in raising the baby snakes. The babies are born with everything they need to survive in the wilderness. They will have almost no natural predators(捕食者)to worry about when they reach adulthood.

6.We have seen that humor and laughter positively influence our body in many ways,but little research has been done on whether a better sense of humor actually helps keep you from getting sick.However,since people with a better sense of humor have higher IgA levels,and since research has shown that those with higher levels of salivary(唾液的) IgA are less likely to get colds or be infected with Streptococcus,humor should reduce the frequency of colds.
The only study to directly examine this question found that the impact of one's sense of humor upon colds depends on the kind of sense of humor you have.It was only individuals whose sense of humor took the form of seeking out and appreciating humor who had fewer and less severe colds/flu than their low humor counterparts.Surprisingly,those whose sense of humor took the form of initiating humor more often did not have fewer or less severe colds/flu.The researchers argued that being a person who likes to tell jokes or otherwise initiate humor takes them into more frequent contact with other people,which serves to expose them to infectious agents more often,robbing them of the advantage that a more active sense of humor otherwise offers.Obviously,more research is required to clear up this confusing picture.
The importance of active use of one's sense of humor in producing humor's health benefits was confirmed in another study in an unusual way.It found that among a group of mothers with newborn infants,those who actively used humor to cope with the stress in their lives had fewer upper respiratory infections and their infants also had fewer infections.This seemed to be because these mothers had higher levels of immunoglobulin A (免疫球蛋白A) in their breast milk.
Among adults,if we look at bodily symptoms alone,independent of any diagnosed illness,there is some evidence that individuals who have more negative reactions to humor report more bodily symptoms and complaints.Students complaining of cardiovascular(心脏血管的) symptoms and gastroenterological (肠胃病的) symptoms also have been shown to have this more negative reaction to humor.

63.What does the passage mainly talk about?A
A.People with a good sense of humor get sick less often.
B.Humor can reduce the frequency of colds/flu.

D.Humor can treat illness.

A.a medicine    B.enzyme     C.factor     D.measure
65.Why do newborn infants whose mothers use humor to deal with stress have fewer infections?C
A.Because they don't often get upper respiratory infections.
B.Because they are stronger since they were born.
C.Possibly because of the higher levels of immunoglobulin A in their breast milk.
D.Because their mothers take better care of them.
66.Students with some bad bodily symptoms showB towards humor.
A.a positive attitude           B.a negative attitude
C.a neutral attitude            D.an unclear attitude.

10.Mountain lions live in mountainous areas of the western United States.Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country!Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable. In addition, the lions appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs of Boston,Philadelphia, and Chicago.
It seems certain that these"kings of the mountains"are moving. Why?Scientists are not sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.
"The young males are looking for new homes,"says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento,Calif."People tend to create too many barriers, such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources, these barriers get in their way."
The sightings have made people increasingly watchful.Sometimes the"mountain lions"that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads,t he growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoo r activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.
Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion,an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats:Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.
"To be fair,"says the expert,"mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first. Now we need to find ways we can live together."
