Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the
Guinness Book Records. It is 1,510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor, St. Helena, and 1, 950 miles
west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral (葡萄牙海军上将) of the same name in 1506 and
settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.
Coming in a close second-and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land-is Easter Island, which
lies 1, 260 miles east of its nearest neighbor. Pitcairn Island, and 2, 300 miles west of South America.
The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who
were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them
plenty of time to build more than 1, 000 huge stone figures, called moat, for which the island is most famous.
On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name. Today,
2,000 people live on the Chilean territory (智利领土). They share one street, a small airport and a few hours
of television per day.
1. It can be learned from the text that the island of Tristan da Cunha _____.
A. was named after its discoverer

Buster Brown was a thief-and a good one, too, he thought. He'd never been caught
by the police because he never took chances. He was always prepared for any
unforeseen event or emergency.
Confidently, he stood outside the house of his intended victim (受害者) and read the sign on the front gate
of the house. "Don't worry about the dog-be aware of the owner!" it said. Buster smiled and found his way in.
The house looked quite normal outside, but inside it was very exotic with fascinating objects on display. As
he began putting them into his bag, a dog came into the room. It stopped when it saw Buster, then wagged its
tail madly and went over to him, licking his outstretched hand.
"Good boy," Buater whispered. "What a great guard dog you are-trying to lick me to death."
Satisfied he'd made friends with the dog, Bluster began to wander round the house, choosing items to put
in his bag. His skilled eye picked out only the best antiques (古董): a pair of silver candleholders, a silver tea-and-
coffee service, etc..His new friend, the dog, sat and watched, as if wondering what was happening.
"Well, boy," Buster whispered, finally. "That might do. Any more and I won't be able to carry it!" He swung
the heavy bag onto his shoulders, just as the lights came on, nearly blinding him. He shielded his eyes with his
hand.
"You're a very silly person," the figure in the doorway said. As the man came closer, Buster could see he
was well dressed. His face seemed familiar, but Buster couldn't quite place where he had seen him before.
"You should have taken more notice of the sign outside," the man rasped. "I knew about this attempted

"Good evening, everybody!" said the teacher, Donna. "Where is everybody?" That was sort of a daily
joke by Donna. Usually the class started with only two or three students present, and then filled up as the
minutes went by. It was summertime. Summer school was only eight weeks long. Class attendance was
always smaller than during fall and spring semesters.
"I don't know, teacher. Maybe they late or no come," said one student. "Maybe watching TV football
tonight."
"Is there a soccer game tonight? It seems like there's a soccer game every night. Oh, well. Let's get
started, okay? We're on page 36 in the workbook. Tonight we're studying participles as adjectives. Students
are always confused when they learn about the present and past participles, so we will practice this a lot.
Tonight, we're just going to practice the present participle.
"The present participle tells us what emotion or feeling the subject is causing. For example, 'Grammar
is boring' means that the subject-grammar-causes an emotion of boredom. If we say, 'The movie is
interesting,' we are saying that the movie causes a feeling of interest. If we say, 'The roller coaster is exciting,'
we are saying that the roller coaster causes a feeling of excitement. Any questions so far? Am I confusing
you? Is everyone confused?"
The classroom was quiet. Donna looked at blank faces. They were confused. She knew this would take
a while. But eventually, the faster students would grasp it, and then they would help the slower students. By
the end of the evening, most of the class would feel comfortable using the present participle.
Donna erased the board and put some new examples on it. She loved guiding her students through difficult
topics like this one. She always felt a little bit thrilled when the look of understanding came to their faces.
1. What do you think the class is about?
A. Going over homework.
B. English grammar.
C. Football.
D. British culture.
2. We can infer from the first paragraph that _____ in summer time.
A. some students are often late for school
B. some students often watch football games with the teacher
C. more students often ask for leave
D. more students often go to school
3. The underlined work "blank" probably means _____.
A. excited
B. interested
C. confused
D. pleased
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Donna was experienced in teaching English grammar.
B. Donna made the students practice using the present participle.
C. Donna didn't use any examples to help the students.
D. Donna made herself understood at last.

A Spring Festival
Water-Sprinkling Festival, which comes in mid-April, is the new year of the Dai ethnic people (傣族人)
in southwest China's Yunnan Province. In face of the recent serious drought disaster, there have been calls
for calling off this year's festival celebrations.
Droughts and floods are not new things. Still, the Water-Sprinkling Festival keeps going on year by year.
Indeed, this is a serious drought, but that is not a reason to call off this year's celebrations. After all, it is an
important event for Dai people to carry forward their culture.
Of course, the drought will affect the celebrations to some extent. Given the seriousness of the disaster,
this year not so much water is available for sprinkling. So many Dai people suggest only symbolic activities

expected to be a special Water-Sprinkling Festival.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This
kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for
years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary (暂时的). This is the most common type. It usually disappears
quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result
or a particular situation-for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place.
Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually
does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (长期的) loneliness usually
last more than two yeas and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems
socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lone people think there is little or
nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists (心理学家) agree that one important fact in loneliness is a person's social contacts, e.g,
friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance,
our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar
interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lone people may have many social
contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy
and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart
disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness
can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

B. lonely people don't have many social problems

3. Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people?

A. Chronic loneliness can cause family problems
