Weather experts said this year could be one of the strongest EL Nino events in recorded history. El Nino means severe weather conditions in parts of the world. In eastern Africa, for example, Kenya and Uganda are preparing for possible flooding. Yet South Africa and Malawi are already dealing with extremely dry weather.

El Nino is Spanish for “the child”. It usually begins in December, near the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. In fact, the weather event was named in his honor. El Nino develops when winds off the west coast of South America weaken. This permits warm water in the western Pacific to expand toward the east and the Americas. At the same time, clouds and rain over the warm water move east, too. El Nio conditions normally appear only about twice every 10 years. Usually, El Nino conditions continue for about 12 to 18 months. They bring warm weather to some areas. These areas become wetter than normal, while others become drier.

The United Nations Children’s Fund warns that many people are at risk from hunger, disease and water shortages resulting from El Nino. In the east and southern Africa up to 11 million children could be affected. East African countries usually experience heavy rainfall during the El Nino. Southern Africa usually has little rainfall which may lead to wildfires or drought(干旱).

Weather changes caused by El Nino depend on the strength of the condition. In the early 1980s, strong El Nino was linked to dry weather in Australia and Asia, rain and flooding in South America and high temperatures in many parts of the U.S. The years later, smaller El Nino caused trouble in parts of the U.S. It caused severe floods in the Southeast and the Middle West. Tom Di Leberto is a meteorologist(气象学家) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington, D.C. He said this year could be the third strongest El Nino on record. The town of Green Bank, West Virginia, is the site of the largest radio telescope in the world, so Internet connections and anything else that can create electromagnetic(电磁的) waves, such as smart phones and microwave ovens, are banned.

Green Bank is frozen in time, somewhere in the 1950s, because there’s a 33,000-square-kilometer zone of silence due to the telescope. Cell phone towers are forbidden.

The closer you get to the telescope, the greater the restrictions. There’s a 16-kilometer radius(半径) around the observatory where radio-controlled items, even toys, cannot be used.

Telescope employees even work in a special room that blocks electromagnetic waves from leaving it. “Here imagine a submarine(潜艇), water cannot get inside, and so this room is an electric submarine. No electromagnetic waves can get into this room, just as you can’t go beyond it,” Michael Holstein, an observatory officer, said.

The size of a football field, the telescope is so sensitive that it could pick up signals sent from an alien world. And scientists can’t wait for that to happen.

“All the signals that we now receive with the help of telescopes are signals that come from cosmic objects — stars, galaxies. We have not yet received anything from intelligent civilizations,” scientist Richard Lynch said.

Local people respect the work of the scientists. “Yes, we are different. Many would say that we live the old-fashioned way, in the past. But for us, it’s just the way of life that we have always lived,” Sherry said.

Monthly active users of WeChat, a popular social networking App run by Internet Tencent Holdings Ltd, rose to 889 million last year, up 28 percent year-on-year, according to a report on Thursday.

The report said the number of active WeChat users last year helped directly drive 174.3 billion yuan of information-sector(信息产业)spending, an increase of 26.2 percent on the previous year.

The government has urged to expand consumption to create new sources(来源)of economic growth and to help drive industry upgrading.

The report added that the popular message App, which provides a wide range of services, created jobs for 18.81 million people in 2016, up 7.7 percent year-on-year.

It found that the percentage of older WeChat users gradually increasing. Those aged over 55 using voice messages accounted for 22 percent of the total, while their average length of time spent on audio and video calling service reached 82 minutes, higher than other groups of users.

The report also found that WeChat has quickened the transmission(传送) of information, changed people’s paying habits because they only need to take their mobile phones when going out to shop, and create the channels with which people get information.

Ma Shicong, an analyst at Beijing-based Internet Consultancy Analysis, said: “WeChat has accumulated a large number of faithful users by providing various services, from instant messaging, information to mobile payments. WeChat helps make lives easier and more convenient.”

The report also showed the WeChat official accounts were favored by users, with 36.1 percent of them following or subscribing to accounts related to in news and information.
