It’s not Christmas Day yet. But wherever I go on the streets, I see shops selling Christmas trees and all kinds of beautiful decorations, waiters wearing Christmas hats; I hear children singing Christmas songs on broadcast; I get messages of Christmas’s best wishes from friends.

I just got quite confused again, since when have Chinese begun celebrating Christmas Day? What do these people celebrate it for, the birth of Chris? But we all know that most of Chinese are not Christians, they don’t even know the origin of Christmas Day, and they celebrate it for no reason.

I don’t celebrate Christmas Day or any other western holidays since I’m not a Christian and nor am I a westerner. I don’t know what Christmas really means. Anyway I can’t get reasonable answers from my friends. Some of them think they would like to just take this chance to enjoy themselves regardless of the meaning of the festival. Some of them think I’m an old-fashioned girl, a bigot who doesn’t appreciate the spirit of Chinese cultural tolerance(宽容) and understanding of other cultures. Well, if it is about cultural tolerance, why don’t we ever celebrate the month of Muharram, or festivals of colours in India, or Fiestas Patrias in Mexico?

I really appreciate cultural exchanges and communications with all nations, but I don’t think this is what it’s about. People are celebrating more and more western festivals while ignoring our traditional ones.

A new U．S．government report says more than two million Americans fall ill each year with drug—resistant bacterial infections(感染)，and 23，000 of them are dying as a result．The head of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention[CDC]said that the number probably will grow．Officials warn that steps must be taken now to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotic(抗生素)drugs．

Without urgent action to stop that trend，warned Tom Frieden whose agency wrote the report，the miracle drugs to fight them won’t be available in the future．

“If we are not careful，the medicine chest will be empty when we go there to look for a lifesaving antibiotic for someone with a deadly infection．But if we act now，we can preserve these medications while we continue to work on development of new medicines．”The report names a drug—resistant abuse of gonorrhea(淋病)，which causes about one quarter of a million hospitalizations in the United States annually．Of the number at least 1 4，000 result in death．

Drug resistance develops through the overuse and inappropriate use of anti—bacterial agents．These can be：doctors prescribing(开药) them to patients who have viral infections that are not affected by medicine meant to fight bacteria；patients not taking all of their medicine as prescribed，so the bacteria making them sick are only weakened，not killed；antibiotic use in healthy farm animals to prevent illness and promote growth．Antibiotic remainders left in meat and animal products can then lead to drug resistance in humans．

Several months ago, I attended the opening event for a new children's literacy(读写能力) campaign at the Burbank Library in California. The campaign is called Marvel Comics Close－Up, aimed at using comic books to encourage kids to read. Disney and Marvel donated 210，000 books to libraries and schools across the country.

Stars from Disney XD participated. They read Spider－Man comic books to 70 kids from Boys & Girls Clubs in southern California. The stars included Drake Bell (Ultimate Spider－Man), Dylan Riley Snyder (Kickin' It), Olivia Holt (Kickin' It) and Cole Jenson (Crash & Bernstein)．

Drake Bell said that the Marvel reading campaign is aimed at kids who are bored with books, believing comic books are the answer for kids who say they'd rather play video games. “Comic books really get you into the story，” he told TFK(Time For Kids). “They are not just words or pictures on a page.”

Dylan Riley Snyder knows from his experiences that comic books have the power to inspire kids' imagination. His mom was a teacher and she used comic books to interest students who thought they weren't interested in reading. Dylan attended these classes. He would read the comic books and draw the characters along with the students. “It was a great way for these kids to start to enjoy reading，” Dylan said. “That's how I got interested in reading too. Now I can share my love for comic books with others through the Marvel Comics Close－Up program.”

David Levine is the Vice President of Disney XD Worldwide. He said great stories and great characters, like Spider－Man and The Avengers, were key to making reading fun. “Reading can encourage you to explore new things and take you to all sorts of exciting places，” he told TFK.
