Shyness equals (等于) losing opportunities, less pleasure and fewer social connections, but there are ways to make it a thing of the past.

When I was fifteen, I was shy. I remember an attractive girl trying to talk with me. My shyness made me focus on me instead of her. I heard my own voice but not hers and I thought about what I was trying to say instead of what she was trying to say.

To overcome shyness you need to learn to relax. This gives you the space to practice certain conversational skills. Relaxed socializing (社交) is so pleasurable. To start reducing your own shyness, I want you to absorb the following tips and ideas and start to put them into practice.

Focus your attention away from yourself. Notice what other people are wearing and make a mental note, listen to their conversation, imagine where they might live, and make a point of remembering names. Not only does this give you more to talk about, it also reduces social anxiety, leaving you feeling calmer.

Ask people open questions. Many people like to talk about themselves and will find you interesting if you find them interesting. Ask questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” response such as “What do you like about this place?’ rather than “Do you like this place?” Once they have answered, you can use add-on (追加) questions connected with the first such as “What other places do you like in this city?” Next you can express your views. This is a great way to get the conversation going.

Now I love meeting new people and suspect that my current social confidence would be unrecognizable to my fifteen-year-old self.

Many of us feel sleepy in winter, but other species often take it a step further and hibernate (冬眠). 1. The body slows down and breathing, temperature and metabolic and heart rate all decrease. Dormice (睡鼠) head underground and hedgehogs (刺猬) hunker down in their nests.

Hibernation seems to do them good. But human cannot bed down for long periods. 2. To work out why we do not, first we need to find out why animals do. The most obvious reason for hibernating is to avoid the cold. Conditions are harsh and there is little food to eat, as fewer plants are growing. 3. Then they live off body-fat reserves until it’s time to wake up.

But a 2015 study of dormice found that they continued hibernating even when cold conditions had ended. 4. The key issue seemed to be connected with their main food: beech trees. The dormice need their seeds to reproduce, or for the baby dormice to gain enough body fat. In a harvest year, they produce plenty of seeds. Somehow the dormice could predict it. Otherwise, they stop reproduction these years and increase their survival by staying underground.

5. By staying out of sight, the dormice avoided being hunted by their predators (天敌) like owls. Until recently people thought hibernation was just about energy saving, a defense against cold weather and food shortage, and now we think it’s more predator avoidance. The survival rates in hibernation are close to 100%.

A. So obviously there are other reasons.

B. They were hibernating underground to save energy.

C. Hibernation is an extended period of energy-saving state.

D. All kinds of animals hibernate, from insects to birds and primates.

E. Why, if it is so beneficial, do we not hibernate?

F. The dormice had another reason to stay underground.

G. So many animals fatten themselves up during summer.

What we wear at home is our own business. We can dress freely at home. No one will care or debate about it. _1._ . Why? That’s because the way we dress affects us and other people. It is basically a matter of self respect and respect for others.

According to a famous behavioral economist, humans have a pattern of irrational(不理智的) behaviours. One of them is called “the effect of expectation”. Ariely says that when a person believes beforehand that something is good, he will look upon it generally as good. _2. . If you wear a cheap old T-shirt like a beggar, the respect and expectation that you gain from people around you will be poor.

Some people might argue that we should have the freedom to dress however we want regardless of what people think. They can also argue that we should not judge people based on how a person dresses. _3._ . People judge us based on how we look, and that is a fact that we should accept.

In fact, we don’t have to spend a lot of money buying the most expensive clothes. It doesn’t make sense to go to a supermarket in a tux (晚礼服). 4. . Experts suggest that we should have various levels of dressing. For example, level 1: dressing for staying at home, level 2: casual dress for going out with friends, level 3: formal dress for work, level 4: attire (盛装) for business functions and so on.

_5._ . When we choose clothes to wear, we should be aware of how it makes us generally look. At least we should be aware of it instead of just wearing it and going without giving a second thought. Dressing up is how you “sell” yourself so don’t take it too lightly.

A. The dress should match the occasion.

B. It is helpful to have fashion awareness when we dress.

C. Therefore, the look is important for a first impression.

D. That is pretty ideal, but it is not practical in the real world.

E. It changes people’s reactions towards you in a positive way.

F. Therefore, it is a good idea to be aware of how we behave at home.

G. However, when we dress up and go out to public places, it becomes an issue.
