Sleeplessness in Seattle?Hardly.West Virginia is where people are really staying awake, according to the first government study to monitor state-by-state differences in sleeplessness.West Virginians'lack of sleep was about double the national rate, perhaps a side effect of health problems such as obesity(肥胖),experts said.
Nearly I in 5 West Virginians said they did not get a single good night's sleep in the previous month. The national average was about 1 in l 0,according to a federal health survey.Tennessee,Kentucky and Oklahoma also were notably above average with nearly 1 in 7 people reporting in a lack of sleep. In contrast,North Dakota was below average, with only 1 in 1 3 reporting that degree of sleeplessness.Health officials do not know the exact reasons for the differences.
In.the survey, people weren't required to answer the question why they were not able to get enough rest or sleep. But experts noted several possible explanations:West Virginia ranks at or near the bottom of the nation in several important measurements of health, including obesity, smoking, heart disease and the proportion of adults with disabilities.
Studies have increasingly found that sleeping problems often occurred among people with certain health problems, including obesity."You would expect to see poorer sleep within a chronically(慢慢地) diseased population",noted Dr Ronald Chervin,a sleep disorders expert in University of Michigan.
Financial stress and work shifts(倒班)can play roles in sleeplessness, too,Chervin added. He suggested those may be contributing factors in West Virginia,an economically depressed state with tens of thousands of people working in coal mining.
The report was based on results of an annual telephone survey of more than 400,000 Americans, including at least 3,900 in each state. The survey did not include people who use only cellphones.

57.What does the underlined word"notably"in Paragraph 2 mean?(No more than 3 words.)Highly
58.What was the possible reason for the high rate of sleeplessness in West Virginia according to Paragraph 3?(No more than 12 words.)West Virginia had a low level of several important measurements of health.
59.List three factors that contribute to sleeplessness based on the passage.(No more than 8 words.)
(1)being too fat(2)financial stress(3)work shifts
60.How was the research carried out?(No more than 10 words.)By interviewing over 400,000 Americans on the telephone..

分析 文章介绍西弗吉尼亚州人的失眠问题,分析他们失眠的原因和造成失眠的因素.

解答 56:West Virginians suffer from lack of sleep the most perhaps due to health problems.段落大意题:从第一段的句子:West Virginians'lack of sleep was about double the national rate, perhaps a side effect of health problems such as obesity (肥胖),experts said.可知这段讲的是:西弗吉尼亚州的人可能因为健康问题失眠.
57:Highly.猜词题:从第二段的句子:Tennessee,Kentucky and Oklahoma also were notably above average with nearly 1 in 7 people reporting in a lack of sleep.其中的比例1:7可知比1:10要高,notably=Highly
58:West Virginia had a low level of several important measurements of health.细节题:从第三段的句子:West Virginia ranks at or near the bottom of the nation in several important measurements of health, including obesity, smoking, heart disease and the proportion of adults with disabilities.西弗吉尼亚州的人失眠是因为他们的健康测量的水平都很低.
59:①being too fat ②financial stress ③work shifts.细节题:根据第四段的:including obesity.和第五段的Financial stress and work shifts (倒班) can play roles in sleeplessness,too,可知导致失眠的原因有:①being too fat  ②financial stress ③work shifts
60:By interviewing over 400,000 Americans on the telephone.细节题:从最后一段的:The report was based on results of an annual telephone survey of more than 400,000 Americans,可知调查是通过电话采访400,000个美国人.

17.For every woman who feels like she's had to scale back her personal ambitions since becoming a mother,gold medal cyclist Kristin Armstrong has a message:Don't give up on your dreams.
She retired after winning gold in Beijing to start a family; son Lucas arrived in 2010,but then she decided to compete again in the London Olympics.She won a gold medal at last.
The decision to start training again wasn't easy."I struggled with that a lot,"she told a newspaper."At the beginning I felt selfish,I felt like,‘Well,I'm not supposed to be thinking of myself anymore.It's all supposed to be for my kid.'"
She faced physical challenges of getting back into competition shape after giving birth,as well.When she started racing in the spring of 2011,she was still breast-feeding; she would nurse her son,then race,then breast-feed again after the race.Her days revolved around Lucas and training.
"I feel like I'm able to do what I love to do and still manage a family and have that balance,"Armstrong said."That you have a family or a child doesn't mean that you have to stop going after what you dream of individually."
Armstrong makes balance look easy,whether it's on her bike or as an athlete-mom.But she points out that you can't have it all without making some sacrifices.For example,don't expect a neat home-her husband,Joe Savola,who she describes as her support system and her"protector",says he's had to give up on trying to keep everything orderly at home and just accept that their living room has become Lucas's playroom.For Armstrong,she's sacrificed time with friends who had kids around the same age-there just wasn't time.
Now,she says,"That sounds like fun to me."As she heads home to Boise,Idaho,she's ready to do regular mom stuff.

1.I don't ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again.There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it's like to work in a field dominated (主导) by men.I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting.What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe,the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes.
At 19,when I began studying astrophysics (天体物理学),it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom.But while earning my Ph.D.at MIT and then as post-doctor doing space research,the issue started to bother me.My every achievement-jobs,research papers,awards-was viewed through the lens of gender (性别) politics.So were my failures.Sometimes,when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus (相对于) right brain,or nature versus nurture (培育),I would immediately fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind.
Then one day a few years ago,out of my mouth came a sentence that would from then on become my reply to any and all attacks:I don't talk about that anymore.It took me 10years to get back the confidence I had at 19and to realize that I didn't want to deal with gender issues.Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist?After all,I don't study sociology or political theory.
Today I research and teach at Barnard,a women's college in New York City.Recently,someone asked me how many of the 45students in my class were women.You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer:45.I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children.And I don't dismiss those concerns.Still,I don't tell them"war"stories.Instead,I have let them see their physics professor heavily pregnant (怀孕) doing physics experiments.And in return they have given me the image (形象) of 45women driven by a love of science.And that's a sight worth talking about.

57.From Paragraph 2,we can infer that people would thought the author failed because ofB.
A.her study in gender politics
B.the very fact that she is a woman
C.her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist
D.the burden she bears in a male-dominated society
58.What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D.and post-doctoral research?D
A.Widespread wrong idea about nature and nurture.
B.Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.
C.Unfair blames from both inside and outside her circle.
D.People's traditional attitude towards female scientists.
59.Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?D
A.Female students no longer have to worry about gender issues.
B.Her students'performance has brought back her confidence.
C.Her female students can do just as well as male students.
D.More female students are studying science than before.
60.What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?A
A.Women can balance a career in science and having a family.
B.Women students needn't have the concerns of her generation.
C.Women now have fewer gendre problems about science career.
D.Women have more difficulties on their way to academic success.
