There are two main types of non?verbal communication. Body language is the first. Body language is body movements that depend on a person’s attitude or feelings. Body language includes the way people walk, how they stand, and their facial features. In other words, any kind of meaning is shown by a person’s attitude or body movements. For example, when a boy is sad he may drop his head and walk slowly. Or,if a girl is happy, she might run and jump or stand up straight and put her hands in the air. People don’t have to say anything to show how they feel about things. The colour of people’s skin may even show how they feel. For example,if people with light coloured skin get embarrassed, their skin may turn red,or if they are worried, they might get pale. Body language can be voluntary(主动的) or involuntary(无意识的).An interesting fact is that blind children will smile when happy even though they have never seen a smile.

The next main type of non?verbal communication is gestures. Gestures are communications like facial expressions, hand signals, eye gazing, and body postures. Examples include smiles, handshakes, waving, and raising certain fingers to say something. For instance,if you saw a friend at a noisy carnival, you might smile and wave at your friend. You might also point at the Ferris wheel if you wanted to meet your friend there. You could do all of these things without saying a word. Another great example is in baseball when the catcher signals to the pitcher the kind of pitch to use for the batter that is up.

1.If a boy passes the final exam he ________.

A.might not raise his head

B.might walk home slowly

C.might run home singing

D.might not stand there straight

2.When someone gets pale he is most likely to be ______.

A.anxious B.surprised

C.embarrassed D.disappointed

3.Which one of the following is WRONG according to this passage?

A.Body language is mainly expressed by one’s body movements.

B.The blind children can also smile when they are glad.

C.You can also express yourself without saying a word in baseball.

D.Gestures can be shown only by one’s hands.

4.All the following are gestures except ________.

A.hand signals B.coloured skin

C.hand wave D.eye gazing

In 1996, John Tierney suggested in the New York Times Magazine article that “recycling is garbage.” He wrote, “The money spent on recycling programs should have been spent on real social and environmental problems. Recycling programs not only increase energy use and pollution, but also cost more money than the disposal (处理) of plain old garbage. Recycling may be the most wasteful activity in modern America.”

Environmental groups were quick to express their disagreement. They wrote reports on how recycling programs in cities can reduce pollution and cost less than regular garbage pickup and disposal. Michael Shapiro, an official of the US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), said that “recycling can be good value for money, although there’s still room for improvements.”

But in 2002, New York City, a pioneer of recycling, found that its recycling program was losing money, so it stopped glass and plastic recycling. Other major cities watched closely to see how New York was dealing with its remaining program (the city never stopped paper recycling). But then it closed its last landfill (垃圾填埋地), and private companies out of New York raised prices due to the increased workload of carrying away and disposing New York’s garbage. As a result, glass and plastic recycling became profitable for the city again, and New York brought the program back. According to Cecil Adams of The Chicago Reader, the lessons learned by New York are relevant everywhere. He believes that, if managed correctly, recycling programs should cost cities less than garbage disposal.

Even though the benefits of recycling over disposal are many, keep in mind that it better serves the environment to “reduce and reuse” before recycling is even considered as a choice.

1.Why did John Tierney think “recycling is garbage”?

A. Because he considered recycling a wasteful activity.

B. Because he didn’t think recycling was a new idea.

C. Because he found few people would like to recycle.

D. Because he didn’t like the environmental groups.

2.Which argument was put forward by the environmental groups?

A. Recycling technologies are mature.

B. Recycling programs save money.

C. Recycling programs cause pollution.

D. Recycling technologies are valueless.

3.Why did other cities watch closely to see how New York was doing?

A. Because New York was doing extremely well.

B. Because they didn’t want to have a recycling program

C. Because they felt worried about the waste of money.

D. Because New York was running a new recycling program.

4.Which of the following would the author most probably recommend?

B. Always put your shopping bag into the dustbin after use.

A dam is like a wall that is built across a waterway to control the flow of the water. For many years, dams were built only of earth and rocks.Today, many dams are built of concrete.

When a dam is built, water is trapped and held behind the dam. This water forms a lake. The lakes can be used for recreation or for irrigating,or watering crops. The lakes also provide potable water, water that is safe for drinking. This potable water is piped from the lake into houses and other buildings. The lake water further serves as a home,or habitat, for fish and waterfowl.

Dams are often built to provide flood control.Just before the rainy season, the water in the dam is allowed to flow out very slowly. This lowers the water level in the lake so that snowmelt and rainfall can be stored there in every spring and used as needed during the rest of the year.

Some dams are built to use the power of falling water to make electricity.Such dams have powerhouses that contain machines;turbines and generators.Water falls from the lake to the river below the dam.As the water falls,it is sent through the powerhouse. There, the force of the water turns the turbines and generators and produces electrical power needed to light and heat buildings.
