18.My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live.Two dog walkers passed by and we heard one of them say,"Never seen that dog around here before."
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the hill.We stopped,bent down,talked gently to the dog and patted it.I checked and there was a collar with a phone number.I called but no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin.It didn't have any teeth left.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog's food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me.Julie got home and came back again when I was only halfway there.So we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend made short work of the food.
Eventually we got her home.We gave her a blanket and more food,kept her warm and wondered what to do next.
After trying for many times we got a response from the number.A lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us.She explained that Tara had been her father's dog.She was very old and got lost that morning.So,Tara was safely returned home.
Here is the truth of the story:
Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving.She was trying to persuade me to come back,but I wasn't hearing anything.
I was about to turn and go when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down.Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about.There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it.And here I am writing the story in my own home,in my own family.
In the song"Love Is Not a Fight"Warren Barfield talks about marriage.At one point he sings,"And if we try to leave,may God send angels to guard the door."
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.

5.A recent study surveyed 5,000 British families about their experiences with volunteering and their mental health.Participants completed the same survey every two years from 1996 to 2008.
About 20 percent of the survey participants reported doing regular unpaid work Researchers found that these volunteers also scored highest on their mental health scores.The two were linked so directly that the more a person volunteered,the happier they were.
One could argue a chicken-and-egg theory:happier people are more likely to have the time,money,energy and resources to give back to others.But even when researchers adjusted for education,social class and total health,the link was there,suggesting that the mental increase came from volunteering and not the other way around.
According to Dr.Stephen G.Post,author of The Hidden Gifts of Helping,when you help others,your brain releases feel-good chemicals,which can help cells repair themselves and grow.And this translates to better health.
So volunteering can help improve both your physical and mental health-on one condition.You have to mean it.People who volunteered for"self-oriental"reasons,either because they were forced to do so for work or school or because they were trying to get away from problems in their lives,had a mortality(死亡率)risk that was similar to those who didn't volunteer at all.It was only when people were volunteering out of a true sense of sympathy that they saw any health benefits.
So whether it's arranging books at the library or walking dogs at the animal shelter,find a cause that's important to you and give it a try.Volunteering is a good way to develop a sense of connection that not only helps your community,but may also be good for you.

15.DI stood at the edge of the cliff (悬崖).Dark-feathered birds circled the air, diving low over the ocean every now and then to catch their dinner.Below me,hundreds of feet below, the deep ocean beat against the rough sandy shore.I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with expectation and excitement-and at the same time, fear.
I was here for the shooting of a movie as I was one of the lead actors in the film Dangerous Things, and this was the most important scene right in the middle of it.It was vital that this went right.
The director had talked to me about getting a stunt double (替身),but I'd persuaded him that I could handle the dive.I'd taken a diving course a few years before, and I'd been taking swimming lessons since I was five years old.I had been pretty confident that I could do this-up till now.
Someone called out,"Keira, you don't have to do this! Are you sure you want to dive?"It was one of the producers,Callie Evans.I knew she meant well, but deep in my heart I knew I couldn't turn back now.I couldn't bear to see the disappointed look on the director's face when he was told that I couldn't do it.
At that moment, all my fears and worries broke free.I dived downwards. The air on either side of me cut into my extended arms.I knew that this wonderful feeling of flight would only last a few seconds, yet time seemed to slow down.I could hear the thrilled screams of my crew and a burst of applause (鼓掌) that seemed to echo in my ears.
