When I was in Grade 8, my family move to another city, so I had to go to a new school. Being in a unfamiliar place, I felt lonely and frightening. One evening I went out with my friends Wang Yi for a meal in a country pub. We left at 9:30 and I was offered to take Wang Yi home. We were driving along when, suddenly, a car drove past us out of control. The car crashed and before that it burst into flames. We ran to the burning car quickly. When we get there, we saw three people trapping inside. They were screaming and we knew we had to get them in. It was extreme hot as we opened the doors, and we saved them successfully. It's nice feeling to know they have helped to save those people.

I bought a box set of four Winnie the Pooh books while on holiday when I was eight years old. I adored Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. They became very real to me and I credit them with starting a lifelong love of reading.

I still have the box set, and loved reading the stories to my children when they were small. Part of me secretly believes A. A. Milne’s wonderful characters are all alive and well and still having their adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights by Charlotte and Emily Bronte

I can never separate Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights when I think about books that have stayed with me. Both had a deep impact on me when I read them as a teenager.

They were the first classic books I read purely for pleasure, rather than because I had to for school.

I grew up in Yorkshire, not far from where the Brontes lived, so part of me really understood the depressing landscape. That close geographical connection led to a lifelong interest in the authors as much as in the books themselves.

I wrote a high-school essay on the contrasts and similarities between Charlotte and Emily and their heroines. I’d be fascinated to read that essay now to see what conclusions I reached as a 17-year-old.

I don’t remember exact how old I was when I began to ride a bike. I only remembered how I practiced riding a bike in early years. When I first successfully rode a bike, that remains a vivid memory, my brother helped me with holding the back seat of the bike while I was riding. “Wow, I did it!”, cried I, as soon as he noticed I was riding without his hands hold it! Last week our class voted what to do about our class outing: visiting Yanghu Park or going to the zoo. Our girls wanted to go to Yanghu Park. And since we were in the minority, we lose to the boys, who all wanted to go to the zoo. We got the admission rate for students, which was greatly since I still had enough money to buy a brochure about the park as well as anything at the souvenir shops. The animal were scary but really amusing. As we were taking the pictures, we could see the eyes of many creatures look out at us.
