Head above water£¿

¡¡¡¡TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea£®

¡¡¡¡Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu¡¯s nine little islands is more than five metres above sea level£®Salt water is already entering the country¡¯s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable£®Without urgent help, the country¡¯s days are numbered£®

¡¡¡¡But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea£®Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years£®Experts say that it will have sunk another 20¡«50 cm by 2050£®A century ago, St£®Mark¡¯s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year£®Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times£®

¡¡¡¡While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu¡¯s rising sea level is caused by global warming£®

¡¡¡¡The average global temperature has increased by almost 0£®5 centigrade degree over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by an extra 1¡«3 degrees over the next 100 years£®

¡¡¡¡Warmer weather makes glaciers(±ù´¨)melt, adding more water to the ocean£®The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise£®The sea level has risen about 10¡«25 cm in the last 100 years£®

¡¡¡¡The main cause of global warming is human pollution£®Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2£®This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer£®

¡¡¡¡Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes£®The sea level could rise by one meter this century£®

¡¡¡¡Should this come true, millions of homes will be swallowed up by the sea and the world will be flooded with ¡°climate refugees¡± looking for somewhere to live£®

(1)

The people of Tuvalu are afraid that _________£®

[¡¡¡¡]

A£®

they will be in great hunger

Venice will sink 24 cm in the following 100 years£®

(3)

Why is the globe becoming warmer and warmer?

[¡¡¡¡]

A£®

Because that the seawater is being polluted£®

B£®

Because a lot of terrible fires have broken out in the cities£®

C£®

Because, with the development of industry and the living level rising, more and more coal, oil and gas are being burnt£®

¡¡¡¡What will man be like in the future£in 5000 or even 50 000 years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today£®For man is slowly changing all the time£®

¡¡¡¡Let us take an obvious example£®Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today£®Now, on the average, men are about three inches taller£®Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller£®

¡¡¡¡Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal£®Even so, we still make use of only about 20£¥ of the brain¡¯s capacity£®As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too£ºthe head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger£®

¡¡¡¡Nowadays our eyes are in constant use£®In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses£®But over a very long period of time it is likely that man¡¯s eyes will grow stronger£®

¡¡¡¡On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs£®These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker£®At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life£®

¡¡¡¡But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer£®In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald!

¡¡¡¡Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true£®All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us£®He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own£®

(1)

The reason for believing that future man will be different is that he _________£®

[¡¡¡¡]

A£®

began to change five hundred years ago

B£®

never stops changing

C£®

never stops growing

D£®

has recently begun

(2)

People¡¯s heads will eventually grow larger£®This is because their brains _________£®

[¡¡¡¡]

A£®

will grow faster

B£®

will be in use

C£®

will play an important part

D£®

will need more room than at present

(3)

Future man will probably _________£®

[¡¡¡¡]

A£®

have bigger eyes

B£®

get weaker eyes

C£®

see better

D£®

have to wear better glasses

(4)

Future man¡¯s hair will _________£®

[¡¡¡¡]

A£®

grow darker

B£®

stop growing completely

C£®

fall out more often

D£®

get longer

¡°Dad! He took a book without paying!¡± I yelled .

My father looked surprised. Before the boy could say anything, his mother grabbed his arm and shook it. ¡°Is it true? You stole? Tell me!¡±

Everyone was quiet. The boy began to cry, and he nodded his head. He pulled out the comic book (Âþ»Êé) from under his shirt.

¡°Oh, Mr. Kim. I am sorry! My Ted made a big mistake!¡± Mrs. Diaz told my father. She tried to take the comic book, but Ted wouldn¡¯t let go.

¡°It¡¯s OK. He can keep it,¡± my father said with a smile.

¡°Oh no,¡± Mrs. Diaz said. ¡°Let me pay right now ...¡± She dug in her purse. ¡°How much?¡±

¡°Three seventy-five.¡±

Mrs. Diaz¡¯s eyes widened, and she dug deeper. I saw her mouth make a small line. ¡°Three seventy-five?¡± she asked.

¡°It¡¯s OK. You can pay later,¡± my father said.

¡°No,¡± Mrs. Diaz said. She kept looking in her purse. ¡°I have money here.¡±

I felt bad for yelling, for I realized that Ted had tried to steal the comic book because he didn¡¯t have the money. Maybe the boy could have a job, I thought.

I had an idea.

¡°What if he worked with me?¡± I asked. They turned to me.

I said, ¡°He can work with me to pay for the comic book.¡±

¡°Good,¡± my father said smiling at me. Mrs. Diaz nodded. She turned to her son, ¡°You hear? You will work and buy the comic book!¡±

¡°Yes, Mama,¡± Ted said, hanging his head.

As they left, Ted looked back, and though he still seemed sad, he stuck out (Éì³ö) his tongue at me.

Ted has been working here for two weeks. He has paid for the comic book, but my father says he is such a good worker that he can work with me as long as he wants. We are friends now.
