Equality
“Should men and women be equal?” this is an issue (问题) much talked all over the world. China has made great effort to improve the legal status of women and put the principle of equality into practice. However, women are still denied(否定) the right to compete with men on equal terms in many fields.
In this enlightened(开明的) age, there still exist a certain number of men who view women as second-class citizens. They maintain many things men do could not be done by women, who are inferior(低等的), unreliable(不可信任的), irrational(无理性的) and weak. Some men even say housework is the women’s task and the wives’ sacrifices(【美】牺牲) are sure to set the husbands up for great success. So the former should have more rights than the latter.
Nevertheless(然而), women have shown their excellence and superiority(优越) in any fields. As football players, doctors, professors, scientists, and even presidents of countries, they are as good as men and have often put men to shame. They are so conscientious(诚实的), industrious(勤奋的), and persevering(坚忍的) that they frequently succeed brilliantly(出色地) in all walks of life in addition to bearing and rearing children.
It goes without saying that from the time when mankind first appeared on the earth, there have been men and women. Humanity(人性) could not have existed and progressed(前进) without either of them.

Equality Between Men and Women
The world can’t go without either men or women. Although there are a great many excellent women who have achieved outstanding achievements in all walks of life at home or abroad, women haven’t achieved full equality in reality.
A Chinese saying goes: women can hold up half of the sky. In fact, there are a great number of great women in the world. As great women, they don’t care for themselves at all, and at some point or rather, they must give some sacrifices, just like Lin Qiaozhi, she devoted all her life to medical work for Chinese women and children and had chosen not to have a family of her own. Instead, she made sure that about 50000 babies were safely delivered to their mothers. Not all people can do this. Once they have chosen their careers, they would carry on with them without any withdrawal. What they have done is
encouraging thousands of people to continue their careers.
Women have made great contributions to the society. The number of business women, female doctors, scientists and leaders is considerably increasing. However, there is no denying that prejudice against women is deeply rooted still in some people's mind, especially in distant rural areas. Women are discriminated in some fields. In practice, women are still thought of as inferior that cannot take up responsible jobs. Cases of sexual discrimination are often heard of. The situation is even worse now when the market oriented economy is adopted and personal abilities, both physical and intellectual, are increasingly stressed. On the job market, many companies and factories are unwilling to employ girl graduates because they don't want to spend time and money training them while taking the risk of their leaving to have children after they get married. When employment rate drops, women workers are usually the first to be laid off. Doubts as to women's capability are deeply rooted in Chinese culture. So I argue that Chinese women still have a long way to go in their struggle for real equality in every field of the society.
To be honest, in my opinion, women are no less competent than men. They can take up almost all the professions once only occupied by men. We have to admit the sex sameness will be never to come. Men and women should show more respect and love to each other. So, mankind should take further painstaking efforts to really realize equality.
阅读下面的短文,然后从A-F选项中,为每一小段选择合适的标题, 并把答案写在答案卷上。
A. The most common problem is a “wandering” mind B. Selective listening is also a mental barrier C. Listening isn’t an easy skill to master D. Attitude can also influence good listening E. Noise and background music makes listening more difficult F. Listening is also related to the level of the listener’s knowledge |
1._____________
Listening is not as easy as someone thought. Even good listeners may recall only fifty percent of what they hear. Retention, the ability to remember and recall information, decreases about twenty to twenty-five percent after a few days. So no matter how well you listen in class, you’re always going to have to refresh your memory before a test! Unfortunately, many people have poor listening habits, and little listening training. To improve your listening skills, it’s important to understand what causes poor listening.
2.___________
If you find it difficult to concentrate solely on what a speaker is saying, there’s a good reason. The mind processes information much faster than a speaker can speak. The brain can process over 500 words per minute, while the average speaker talks at a rate of 124 to 250 words per minute. That means the mind can hear what’s being said and can think about something else at the same time.
3.____________
If you have a negative idea about the speaker or the topic, you’ll find it difficult to listen attentively. Hostile or captive audiences often have more difficultly listening than do favorable or voluntary ones.
4.____________
If a speaker speaks “above the heads” of an audience, people find it difficult to concentrate. Speakers who use unfamiliar words or who use incomplete explanations make it more difficult to listen. Speakers who “speak down” to audiences, failing to acknowledge what the audience already knows, also create mental blocks.
5.___________
When people listen selectively, they simply block out what they don’t want to hear. For instance, many people have habits that are dangerous to their health, like smoking. However, they often choose to block out what a speaker says about health risks. They may listen to a speech and think that the speaker’s message applies to other people, not them. In other words, they hear what they want to hear and ignore what they don’t want to hear.
