【题目】Stanley Yelnats was given a choice. The judge said,“You may go to prison,or you may go to Camp Green Lake.”Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before. So, Stanley Yelnats seems set to serve an easy sentence, which is only fair because he is as innocent as you or me. But Stanley is not going where he thinks he is.

Camp Green Lake is like no other camp anywhere. It is a place that has no lake and nothing green. Nor is it a camp,at least not the kind of camp kids look forward to in the summertime. It is only a desert wasteland, dotted with countless holes dug by the boys who live at the camp.

At Camp Green Lake, the warden(看守)makes the boys“ build character” by spending all day, every day, digging holes:five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is searching for something, and before long Stanley begins his own search—for the truth. Fate is to find a solution to it all—the family curse, the mystery of the holes. The great wheel of justice has ground slowly for generations, but now it is about to reveal its verdict(裁决).

The judge said,“You may go to prison,or you may go to Camp Green Lake.意思是:裁判说,”你要么坐牢,或者你将会去荒岛”。而Stanley Yelnats去荒岛是为了服兵役。故选C。

【2】细节题。根据第三段中的“the judge doesn’t believe Stanley’s explanation that the shoes fell from the sky onto his head. And yet, that’s exactly what happened”意思是:裁判不相信Stanley的解释说这双鞋是天空中调到他的头上的,而那就是实际发生的事情。可知Stanley是偶然得到那双鞋的。故选B。

【3】细节题。根据最后一段中的“the boys are digging holes because the warden is searching for something”意思是:这些男孩儿挖洞是因为看守的人在寻找一些东西。故选D。

【4】推断题。文章讲述了Stanley Yelnats无辜被判罪并去 Camp Green Lake服劳役的故事,所以本文有可能出现在报纸中的文学版块。故选D。

【题目】(2011宁夏银川二中月考)

A small town in southwest Britain is banning plastic bags in an attempt to help the environment and cut waste—a step that environmentalists believe is a first for Europe.

Shopkeepers in Modbury, population 1, 5000, agreed to stop handing out disposable plastic bags to customers on Saturday. They said paper sacks and cloth carrier bags would be offered instead.

Last month, San Francisco became the first U. S. city to ban plastic grocery bags. Internationally, laws to discourage the use of plastic bags have been passed in parts of South Africa and Ireland, where governments tax shoppers who use them or fine companies that hand them out. Bangladesh already bans them, and so do at least 30 remote Alaskan villages.

Modbury, about 225 miles southwest of London has also declared a bag amnesty (宽限期), allowing local people to hand in plastic bags that have piled up at home. They will be sent for a recycling.

The Modbury ban was the idea of Rebecca Hosking, who saw the effect of bags on wildlife while working in the Pacific as a wildlife camerawoman. She said response in the town so far had been "really positive".

"Modbury is quite an old-fashioned town and a lot of people have wicker (柳条)baskets to go out shopping anyway," Hosking told Sky News Television.

The Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research agency states that 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year in the United States alone. More than 500 billion are used yearly around the world.

1 What was Rebecca Hosking?

A. A lawyer. B. An environmentalist.

C. A sailor. D. A photographer.

2 The underlined word "disposable" in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.

A. acceptable B. valuable

C. throw-away D. long-lasting

3 It can be inferred from the passage that ______ .

A. most of the people in Modbury continue to use plastic bags

B. fewer and fewer plastic bags will be used in the world

C. San Francisco is the first city to ban plastic bags in the world

D. most countries in the world have passed laws to ban plastic bags
