Today I had an ordinary but meaningful birthday. In the beginning of the day,my parents had intended to give me anything as my birthday present. Great to my amazement, they presented a watch to me. I knew they want me to value time and possess a meaningful life. At the noon,I had a great lunch with some good friends of me in a restaurant. Later on,I enjoyed several things. They treated me to a comic movie, giving me a great deal of pleasures. Soon after the film,I made my best wish, blew out the candles, and cut the cake happily with my classmates.

When it comes to celebrate birthdays, gifts are not the most important things. What matters a lot to me is the beloved people spend this day together.

Some experts feel that cars are certain to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not too distant future when all cars will be deserted and made useless. 1       They hold that the car will remain a leading means of city travel in the foreseeable future.

The car will undoubtedly change greatly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer and more practical and should not be powered by the gas engine. 2       Unless changes take place in the power system, the car in the future will still be the main problem in city traffic jams. One suggested solution to this essential problem is the automated (自动的) system which seems to hold water.

3      ,a small arm will drop from the car and connect with a rail which is similar to a hose (橡皮软管,水龙带) powering subway trains electrically. Once joined to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system and control of the car will pass to a central computer. 4       The driver will use the telephone to dial instructions about his position and the place he heads for into the system. The computer will find the best way and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. 5       It is believed that an automated highway will be able to deal with 10 ,000 cars per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 cars that can be carried by a presentday highway.

   A. There will be plenty of policemen on the highway to control the traffic.

   B. The car of the future should be far more pollutionfree than present types.

   C. The driver will be free to relax and wait for the call that will warn him of his coming exit.

   D. The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements.

   E. When the car enters the highway system

   F. All of the experts don't know what will happen in the future.

   G. Other experts however think the car is here to stay.

Have you felt that you are out of style, either in language,or in ways of expending,or in songs,or even in food and clothing? A kind of culture comes into your life and the world quietly or on a large scale. It has been said that yesterday's cultural icons are on the ash heap today and what's "in" today will be "out" tomorrow. 1       But practically speaking, how does one find time to keep up with all of the trends and changes that take place? I suggest not wasting all of your energy trying!

Allow me to explain. The adolescent years has always been about the process of individuation, separating from parents and becoming an independent adult. Over the past 50 years, youth culture has become more easily identifiable. 2       This makes it difficult for the average parents to keep up. Yet,whatever forms today's youth culture takes,it is important to remember that adolescents use youth culture to express that process―nothing more and nothing less.

Reading a good book on youth culture, periodically thumbing through a magazine marketed to teens or occasionally watching an hour of television programs aimed at teens are all worthy endeavors to keep up with today's youth culture. 3       It is an organization that does an excellent job of watching global youth culture trends that most parents would find difficult to track by themselves.

While keeping track of trends in youth culture throughout the country and the world is good parenting practices, you are supposed to approach them. 4       For instance,it may become trendy on the east coasts for teenage guys to wear Capri pants, but it could also be a trend that never makes it to Sioux Falls. So,if you happen to live in a place that is less trendy by nature,I would not advise that parents spend time preparing against the " Great Capri Pant Invasion". 5

   A. So don't let the speeding changes make you lose the directions.

   B. Still, changes within youth culture itself are rapid.

   C. Keeping up with what's going on at your kids' school just down the road is the most important and practical thing to do.

   D. Another great resource is the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding.

   E. The youth culture nearly takes the leading part in the gap between young and old.

   F. It is wise for parents to be students of youth culture.

   G. You should also know what youth culture matters most to you and your kids.

Mainstream education in the Philippines has been around for more than a hundred years. The idea of sending your child to a 1         (convention) school has been so deeply fixed in our mind that schools are normally considered students' second homes, while teachers take 2        as parents inside the classroom.

By the time children start to walk and talk, parents start to look for the school of good reputation that will raise them best, and one they can afford at that.

But a new movement led 3        the Homeschooling Association of the Philippine Islands (HAPD is changing the landscape of education by advocating homeschooling in the Philippines. Established in 2009,HAPI is an4       ( organize) composed of homeschooling families,as well as various accredited schools who offer home school programs.

Its chairman Edric Mendoza 5       (clarify) ,"Home school is different from home study." Home study is schooling supervised by a teacher or a tutor who drops by a student's house.

"Home school,on the other hand,is a form of education 6        the parent is the teacher and the child is the student," Mendoza says to distinguish the 7        forms.

HAPI believes parents have the option and capacity to educate their children 8         (they) .

Mendoza adds, "The challenge for all of us is that the school system has been there for a while,so we think by default that it is not our job to do it for our kids. So you know 9       ,we need to dispel the idea, that we need a school to do the 10         (teach) for you."

As soon as I walked outside,I    1         (greet) with the shimmering white blanket of cold. 2       the chill overwhelming my skin, inside I was warm. I felt as though I could be giving off heat. I had the desire to stay out in this freeze for hours. It was the type of day 3

speaks to you through its elements. I took a deep breath to hear more snow was coming.

As I walked I looked up,trying to realize 4        made this day so beautiful,so serene. It was as if time 5       (put) temporarily on hold and I along with it. Or maybe I was the only one not paused... Either way,the solitude was comforting, and I sensed myself floating away. I sat down on the edge of a curb and listened. All there was to hear was the wind 6       (rush) over the top of my head and circling some old, cracking leaves some yards 7       . To me it was the 8         (reassure) sound of nature, trying not to be forgotten.

It did start to snow. None of those are little flurries, but big,fat flakes which clung immediately 9        their surface.

Then it was time to go and my reverie (幻想) had to end. As I began walking again,I 10         (drift) back into this time frame, calm and cleared.

Now if only I could remember where I was going.

I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I have become a better listener than I was ten years ago,1       Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It's being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond. In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic of the way we live. 2       It's almost like our goal is to have no time gaps between the conclusion of the sentences of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafe having lunch, eavesdropping (偷听) on the conversations around us. 3       Instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face she said, "Only sometimes."Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener aids you in becoming a more peaceful person.

4       If you think about it,you'll notice that it takes an enormous amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you(or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish,as you simply listen more singlemindedly to what is being said, you'll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You'll immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. 5       Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person,it will also enhance the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.

   A. Communication begins with good listening skills.

   B. It takes pressure from you.

   C. We often treat communication as if it were a race.

   D. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another.

   E. I have to admit I'm still only an adequate listener.

   F. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won't feel in competition with you for "air time"!

   G. Everyone has different ways of listening and expressing themselves.
