Her death forced Rajiv to take over his mother's place and join politics. Rajiv ruled as Prime Minister till 1989. He was assassinated in a bomb attack in 1991.

After Rajiv's ill-timed death,Sonia was so desperate that she decided to stay away from politics. But probably it was Rajiv's love that gave her the strength to gather herself and take over (国大党) ，which was in a worsening condition.
