When I was growing up, I always gave my mom an apron (围裙)on her birthday.I wanted my own mom —   21  that apron I'd just given her, of course —to   22  me at the end of each afternoon bearing a plate of home-baked   23  as she waited breathlessly to hear about my   24  day at school.
Mom loved her family without question, but as an elementary-school teacher she had her own exciting days to   25   .She had hardly any extra time and   26 , and home-baked treats were rare in our house except   27  very special occasions.Since Mom didn't make cookies very often, the   28  of her baking were not always the same.Sometimes the cookies were browned a little more than planned or   29  together and other times the cookies weren't smooth.  30 , none of that bothered anyone in the family. All we   31  was swallowing whatever we were having for dinner that night so we could get to the cookies   32  us on the kitchen counter.
Now that I'm a mom myself, I can   33  all too well why my mother didn't always have the time to wear the apron. As was true with my mother, the list of things I need to do is often   34 than the day itself. But I also understand the desire to   35  the same yellow mixing bowl my mother used and make something special for my family every so often.Whatever I bake is met with approval, appreciation and good   36  by my husband and children. At some level, I believe they're   37  that I was thinking about them as I   38  the brown sugar into the butter or frosted the cake with their favorite kind of icing. They always know I love them.I  39  they know it a little better when I'm in a baking mood.
I'm sure my mother felt   40  the same way whenever she made cookies for us.Those cookies will always, in my mind, be the best treat.

Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer students begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby.   21  Robby said that it had always been his mother’s   22  to hear him play the piano. So I took him as a student.

Then one day Robby   28  coming to our lessons. He telephoned me and said his mother was   29 .
A few weeks after that, I was   30  my students for the upcoming recital when Robby came and asked me   31 he could be in the recital. “Miss Hondorf… I’ll just go to play!” he insisted.
The night for the recital came. The high school gym was   32 with parents, friends and relatives. The recital   33  well. Then Robby came up on stage. I was   34  when he announced that he had chosen Mozart’s Concerto No. 21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I had heard   35  his fingers were light on the keys. They even   36  on the keys… He played so well that everyone was on their   37 in wild applause (鼓掌). In tears I ran up on stage. “Oh Robby! How   38  you do it?”
“Well Miss Hondorf… I   39 on practicing at home. Remember I told you my mom was sick? Well,   40  she had cancer and passed away this morning. She was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play…”

A while ago,I didn’t think I had a passion. 1 would sit in front of the TV all day and not think about anything except the next   36   . At that time,I didn’t know how   37   it was to have a passion in our life.

The first   38   I thought about this was in the seventh grade when 1 went to school with my mom. As we stopped at a red light, someone   39   my eyes. It was a man dressed in old   40  standing on the other side of the    41   . This homeless man was not sitting down with a sad and hopeless   42   . He was standing, waving his hands and dancing. He looked happy and held a radio as if it was the most   43   thing he had.

Seeing all this   44    me. “Morn, why does that man have a radio even though he’s  homeless?”I asked.

“He bought it,”she replied. 1 was still   45   .

“But if he’s  homeless, why doesn’t he use his money to buy clothes? He  46  his money on something he doesn’t need. He should buy food. ”

“Well,Sarah, sometimes food isn’t the most important thing.    47   can be food for the

48    . Food and clothes aren’t the only things we need. People need happiness to stay   49   ,too. ”

I wasn’t sure whether I  50  my mother’s  words. Maybe my mom was right. If one lives in sadness, there’s   51   to keep him moving from day to day.

Now I   52   that I’ve had passions all along, but never recognized their importance in my life. They were invisible(无形的)hopes that I    53   without knowing them. What’s  often forgotten is that we all need a   54   ,a light on a   55   day. We all need a passion.

The ringing of the phone runs through my head, telling me someone needs help. I pick it up and   36   the routine, “Teen Lifeline, this is Amber. ” About 45 minutes later I hang up, feeling pleased because I’ve   37   another teen. Volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize how to deal with my own 38  and help others.

“My mom is always fighting with me. I want to run away. ” Some teens feel their   39   is a prison, rather than a place of shelter and safety. They feel parents are only there to make their lives   40   . We try to help the teens realize the danger they could be in   41   giving them advice. All we can do is to ask questions. We also try to    42   where the teens would go and how they would survive. We give them a phone number if they   43   don’t want to live in their “prison”.

“I don’t want to   44   any more” is something we hear, and suicide(自杀)calls are some of the hardest to    45   . We try to discover why they want to take their lives and how   46   they are by asking them to rate it on a scale of one to ten. One means they are    47   suicide but haven’t decided how, and ten means they are always thinking about it and have a    48   . We ask them to make a promise that they will not hurt   49   . And sometimes we ask for their telephone numbers   50   we can call back to make sure that they are okay.

Although many calls are about relatively   51   problems, volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize I’m not the   52   person with problems, and has taught me how to    53   with my heart. I have made a   54   and saved many lives possibly even my own,   55   .
