13.Buy Nothing Day
Most people buy a lot of gifts just before Christmas.But some people think we buy too much.They have started a special day called Buy Nothing Day.They don't want anyone to go shopping that day.
Buy Nothing Day is November 29.It's 25days before Christmas.It's after Thanksgiving and often the first day of Christmas shopping.At this time,we see ads in newspapers and on TV telling us to"buy,buy,buy!"
The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver,British Columbia.Now people all over the world celebrate Buy Nothing Day.In California,parents and children get together to read stories,sing songs,and paint pictures.The children talk about why they don't need a lot of toys.This year,in Manchester,England,people dressed up to tell people that we buy too much.
In Albuquerque,New Mexico,high school students wanted to tell other students about Buy Nothing Day.They organized a spaghetti dinner to give people information about Buy Nothing Day.They asked restaurants in the neighborhood to donate the food.They made posters and talked to other students about it.The dinner was a big success,and many students agreed not to buy anything on November 29.The students at high school liked the idea of this new tradition.Next year,they want to have another dinner to tell more people about Buy Nothing Day!

1.Why do people all over the world celebrate Buy Nothing Day?B
A.People need more time to do other things.

D.People waste too much time going shopping.
2.How do people celebrate Buy Nothing Day?D
A.In California,parents and children get together to play games.
B.In Mexico,high school students dressed up.
C.In England,people celebrated by performing plays.
D.They bought nothing and made the others decide not to.
3.What did the students do in New Mexico for the day?A
A.They talked to others about Buy Nothing Day.
B.They dressed up to tell people that we buy too much.
C.They organized a spaghetti dinner to donate the food.
D.They got together to read stories,sing songs,and paint pictures.
3.What do Lenordo da Vinci,Paul McCartney,and Albert Einstein have in common?They were all left-handed,along with other famous people including Pablo Picasso,Prince William,and Marilyn Monroe.In fact,an estimated 11percent of Americans and Europeans are left-handed.
Most people around the world are right-handed.This fact also seems to have held true throughout history.In 1997,scientists studied works of art made at various times history starting with cave drawings from 15,000B.C.and ending with paintings from the 1950s.Most of the people shown in these works of art are right-handed,so scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common.
Many researchers claim to have found relationships between left-handedness and various physical and mental characteristics,such as blond hair,blue eyes,vegetarianism,and sleep difficulties.Other studies have found a higher-than-normal level of left-handed people in certain occupations,including professional baseball and tennis players,architects,lawyers,as well as prisoners.However,some of these connections are very weak,and others haven't been proven.
What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed?As yet,no one really knows for sure.One simple idea suggests that people normally get right-handedness from their parents.Studies have found that two right-handed parents have only a 9.5percent chance of having a left-handed child,whereas two left-handed parents have a 26percent chance of having a left-handed child.Another common theory is that left-handed people suffer mild brain damage during birth,which makes them left-handed.However,if this theory were true,it wouldn't explain why the percentage of left-handed people is so similar in every society,when birth conditions vary so much from society to society.
Whatever the reasons behind it,people's attitudes toward left-handedness have changed a lot over the years.Statistics show that although 13percent of young people (10-20years old) are left-handed,only 6percent of the elderly are left-handed.Left-handed children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like other children,but today people who are left-handed are no longer looked down on nor are they considered abnormal.For most people today either case is perfectly acceptable.There are even a number of shops now that specialize in selling products designed for left-handed people,such as left-handed scissors,can openers,guitars,and even a left-handed camera.
In 1976,Left-Handers International,a group of left-handed people in Topeka,Kansas,in the United States,decided to start an annual event in order to clear up misunderstandings about left-handedness.They decided that August 13th is International Left-Handers Day,and to this day groups of left-handed people around the world celebrate their own special day.

10.From the health point of view we are living in an amazing age.We are free from many of the most dangerous diseases.A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modem medicine.It is almost certain that one clay medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases,The expectation of life has increased greatly.But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before,every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men,women and children on the roads.Man vs the motor-cart It is a never-ending battle which man is losing.Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘),his car becomes the extension of his personality.There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's very worst qualities.People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel They say,they are ill-mannered and aggressive,willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish.All their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to die surface by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior.Everything is done for his convenience.Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year,to be easily forgotten.
It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life.With regard to driving,the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax (不严格) and even the strictest are not strict enough.A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate.Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done.The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should tie put through strict tests for safety each year.Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a person's driving ability.Present drinking and driving laws ( where they exist) should be nude much stricter.Speed limits should be required on all roads.Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories,as has been done in the USA.All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned.These measures may not sound good enough.But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths.After all,the world is for human beings,not motor-cars.

45.What is the main idea of this passage?D
A.Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.

D.Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.
