Dear Bob,
I'm writing to apologize for having forgotten to return the ¡°the Beatles¡± CD to you while I left Canada, I was in such hurry that I packed everything in my luggages without checking carefully. Had I paid more attention then, I wouldn't have made such stupid a mistake.
Now everything must be done to solve the problem because I understood you cherish the CD enormously. I can either send it to you by express mail or alternatively compensate(²¹³¥) you at a reasonably price. If you do not mind, I may bring it back to you next time I will go to Canada.
Please let me know what solution you prefer at your earliest convenience. Felt extremely guilty, I really hope you will accept my sincere apology.
Faithfully yours,
Li Ming

A rising population is one of the main reasons that there is global warming. Between 1650 and 1850 the population increased by 0.75 billion people going from 0.25 billion to one billion. From 1930 to the end of the century the population rose from two billion to over six billion. In just a third of the time the population rose by more than five times what it did before. It is expected that this trend in the changing population will continue and could even heighten. The growing population requires increasing amounts of energy. These energy demands and other supplies require production, which almost always involves the emission of greenhouse gases. The more the population increases the more greenhouse gases that are produced and the greater the increase in temperature.
The burning of fossil fuels is one of the best-known causes for global warming. The major reason for fossil fuels contributing so much to global warming is the release of carbon that occurs during the burning of fossil fuels. When people burn fossil fuels, they release large amounts of carbon by way of the release of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in the air then leads to global warming.
Another source of carbon dioxide comes from deforestation. In forests there is a large amount of carbon that is stored in the trees and other plants. This carbon is out of the atmosphere because the trees consume the carbon from carbon dioxide. When people cut down trees, they are frequently burned. This burning releases the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that was stored in organic matter. Even when new trees are planted, it can take up to one hundred years to make up for the carbon that was released. It is commonly thought that because trees absorb more carbon dioxide, the atmosphere experiences positive effects.
Sophie Armstrong, the writer of Earth Care put it, ¡°There's no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer because of human activity rather than a random but natural phenomenon.

The way we do things round here
Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, ¡°Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.¡± That ¡°quite¡± saddened me. I thought he was saying ¡°we're kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.¡± Then I discovered that in American English ¡°quite¡± sometimes means ¡°very¡±, while in British English it means ¡°fairly¡±.
So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don't just mean the words people speak. It is the body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface¡ªdress, food and hours of work¡ªwhile others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate, while getting on with business.
Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality(׼ʱ). If you invite people to a party at 7 o'clock, your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word ¡°late¡± because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.
£¨1£©The author was unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1 because he thought_______.
A.the American bank might hire another person
B.the American bank didn't think much of him
C.it's difficult to get used to American culture
D.it's easy to misunderstand Americans
£¨2£©According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences?
A.Ask the native people for help.
B.Do things in your own way.
C.Understand and accept them.
D.Do in-depth research.
£¨3£©When invited to a party the people who are usually punctual are_______.
A.Germans
B.Italians
C.Greeks
D.The British

Grammar is the system of a language. People sometimes describe grammar as the ¡°rules¡± of a language; but in fact no language has rules. If we use the word ¡°rules¡±, we suggest that somebody created the rules first and then spoke the language, like a new game. But languages did not start like that. Languages started by people making sounds which evolved (Öð½¥·¢Õ¹³É) into words, phrases and sentences. No commonly-spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call ¡°grammar¡± is simply a reflection (·´Ó³) of a language at a particular time.
Do we need to study grammar to learn a language? The short answer is ¡°no¡±. Very many people in the world speak their own, native language without having studied its grammar. Children start to speak before they even know the word¡°grammar¡±. But if you are serious about learning a foreign language, the long answer is ¡°yes, grammar can help you to learn a language more quickly and more efficiently.¡± It's important to think of grammar as something that can help you, like a friend. When you understand the grammar (or system) of a language, you can understand many things yourself, without having to ask a teacher or look in a book.
So think of grammar as something good, something positive, something that you can use to find your way---like a signpost(᱐) or a map.
Except invented languages like Esperanto£¨ÊÀ½çÓ. And if Esperanto were widely spoken, its rules would soon be very different.
£¨1£©Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Grammar is the system of a language.
B.Someone created the grammar first and then people learn the language according to it.
C.Language's developing and forming is a long-term process (¹ý³Ì).
D.There is no language staying the same all the time.
£¨2£©What is the author's attitude towards grammar learning?
A.He is against grammar learning.
B.He is in favor of grammar learning.
C.His attitude is objective(¿Í¹ÛµÄ).
D.His attitude is unknown to us.
£¨3£©Which of the following is CORRECT according to the last paragraph?
A.Esperanto is widely spoken.
B.Esperanto is different from other languages because its rules are fixed.
C.Esperanto is different from other languages because its rules came out before this language.
D.Esperanto is very easy to learn.

Middle and high school days are both fun and busy. Students spend their days in class, listening to the interesting and sometimes boring words of the teacher. They spend the short breaks running, playing, and shouting happily before going back to the classroom again. But how should students spend their free time outside school?
In Western countries, it is common for students to have a part-time job after school and at weekends. Students can earn their own money and learn more about the ¡°real world¡±. They enjoy the extra independence and money, and parents enjoy the quiet house. However, it seems that, in China, parents worry so much about their children' studies that they would prefer to see their children spending most of their free time studying and preparing for all those exams.
It is natural for parents to feel that way, but I believe the answer lies in balance. Sometimes, Western school children work long hours after school to make money, and so they become too tired to listen in class or have no time for homework. But Chinese students spend so much time on their studies that all else becomes less important until they want that new MP4 player.
So, find a good and healthy balance! If you have a part-time job, you'll be happy, and your parents will also be happy because you're spending your hard-earned money and not theirs!
