Traffic in many cities is heavier as many people are a__________ to their cars.
Not long ago, people could only buy organic food in small shops. Today it is common in most major supermarkets. The reason for the increase is that more and more people are demanding food grown without chemicals. Since the 1990s, organic farm production has gone up 20 percent every year. This pattern is expected to continue around the globe.
Australia leads the world in land used for organic agriculture. It has four times as much land devoted to organic farming as all of Asia. However, most of the land is not very fertile, and it only produces a modest amount of food. Argentina is a distant second, followed by Brazil, the United States and China. In Africa, only a very small amount of land is registered for organic farming. That does not mean Africa relies on chemicals. In fact, many farmers do not use chemicals because they cannot afford them. Yet there are no programs for these farmers to prove they do not use chemicals. Without these programs their food can never be approved organic.
India has had the most dramatic recent increase in organic farming. Like many other countries, India sees continual growth in organic food sales around the world. This, of course, leads to growth in profits. Sales of organic food were more than doubled from 2000 to 2005. Like India, many countries are trying to increase commercial organic farming to get a share of the sales. This has led to criticism. Some people believe that organic farming should not just be about making money. They think the goal is to help the environment. Others say organic farming will not continue if it is not profitable. They say that people should be able to make money while providing food that is healthy to mankind.

For generations, people have dreamed of traveling to Mars to explore Earth’s closest planetary neighbor. The American Space Agency, NASA, and other space agencies have announced plans to send people to the Red Planet.1..
In the United States, some volunteers are learning how people will react to months of separation from other humans on a Mars base.2. But actually, they are living in Hawaii. The project is called HI-SEAS. NASA has provided financial support for the work.
Six people are living on a make-believe Mars Base. They are isolated high on top of Mauna Loa, a volcanic mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii, whose environment is as close to Mars as we can find on Earth. 3. When measured from its base, deep in the ocean, Mauna Loa is the second largest mountain in our solar system. Because it is so high, the land is not warm or rich with plants, like the rest of Hawaii. Visually, it is very similar to what you see on Mars. They can walk across red lava rock from the volcano and see the wonderful volcanic material. There is really no visible plant life or animal life.
The six member HI-SEAS crew is mostly self-sufficient. They take care of themselves.4.
But the individuals bringing those supplies cannot communicate with volunteers inside the base. The current crew has been living in the base since October, and will stay until June. Crew members communicate with the outside world through e-mail and blogs. They also produce videos on the YouTube website.5.

How to Improve Speed Reading Skills
Speed reading is one of many skills that can improve your reading comprehension and shorten your study time. 1..
Look at groups of words, not single words.
2.. However, if you can get into the habit of reading groups or chunks of words at one time, then you can read much faster. Start by trying to look at a group of three or four words at once, then work up to looking at an entire line of words. Focus on words that give the sentence meaning, such as the nouns and verbs and pay less attention to the filler words, such as “A, the, and, etc.”
Scan for keywords.
Scanning is a highly effective way of extracting answers from a text without really reading it. If you know exactly what you are looking for—a name, a date, a statistic, or a specific word—you can find it quickly by skipping over large chunks of the text. To scan, first visualize the word, number, or phrase you would like to find. 3.. The information you are looking for should pop out at you.
4..
You can train yourself to read faster by timing yourself as you go. Start by getting your base time. Set a timer for fifteen minutes, and speed read as you normally do. 5.. Do not count the words, just the pages or paragraphs. Record your figures: for instance, you might write “15min/6.5 pages.”
A. Then, run your eyes rapidly over the text
B. Race the clock
C. Check your comprehension
D. If you read a text one word at a time, then this will slow your reading speed way down
E. Here are some Speed Reading Techniques
F. One of the reasons you read slowly is that you have to pause sometimes to understand what a passage is saying
G. When the timer goes off, check to see how far you have got
