The right to pursue happiness is issued to us all with our birth, but no one seems quite sure what it is.
A holy man in India may think that happiness is in himself. It is in needing nothing from outside himself.
If wanting nothing, he lacks nothing. We westerners, however, are taught that the more we have from
outside ourselves, the happier we will be, and then we are made to want. We are even told it is our duty
to want. Advertising, one of our major industries, exists not to satisfy these desires but to create them---
and to create them faster than any man's money in his pocket can satisfy them. Here, obviously someone is trying to buy the dream of happiness and spending millions upon millions every year in the attempt. Clearly the happiness-market is not running out of customers.
I doubt the holy man's idea of happiness, and I doubt the dreams of the happiness-market, too.
Whatever happiness may be, I believe, it is neither in having nothing nor in having more, but in changing
--- in changing the world and mankind into pure states.
To change is to make efforts to deal with difficulties. As Yeats, a great Irish poet once put it, happiness we get for a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties.
It is easy to understand. We even demand difficulty for the fun in our games. We demand it because
without difficulty there can be no game. And a game is a way of making something hard for the fun of it.
The rules of the game are man-made difficulties. When the player ruins the fun, he always does so by
refusing to play by the roles. It is easier to win at chess if you are free, at your pleasure, to cast away all the rules, but the fun is in winning within the rules.
The same is true to happiness. The buyers and sellers at the happiness-market seem to have lost their
sense of the pleasure of difficulty. Heaven knows what they are  playing, but it seems a dull game. And the Indian holy man seems dull to us, I suppose, because he seems to be refusing to play anything at all.
The western weakness may be in the dreams that happiness can be bought while eastern weakness
may be in the idea that there is such a thing as perfect happiness in man himself. Both of them forget a
basic fact: no difficulty, no happiness.
1. Who shares the same idea of happiness with the author?
A. The Indian holy man
B. The great Irish poet Yeats
C. Advertisers
D. The buyers and sellers at the happiness-market
2. What does "happiness-market" mean in the second paragraph?
A. It means a place in which people can buy things happily
B. It means a market which lacks happy customers
C. It means a pure state for the world and mankind
D. It means a market where people try to buy happiness with money.
3. According to the passage, which of the following is Right?
A. The Indian holy man is much happier than westerner.
B. The westerners understand happiness better than the Indian holy man.
C. There is no fun without playing by the rules
D. Both the eastern weakness and western weakness are the same.

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept
is simple:help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the
same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit(追求) to be enjoyed by all,the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus,as well as promoting reading as an experience to be
shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book" project in 1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and
book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many
other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the
first book in the "One Book,One Chicago"program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups
sprang up around the city.Across the US,stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem came up in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to
represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities
or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved.Or it may show that New Yorkers missed
the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a
book itself.
Ultimately,as Nancy points out,the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book ,but by how many people are enriched by the process,or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom
they would not otherwise have shared a word.

1.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?

A.To invite authors to guide readers.
B.To encourage people to read and share.
C.To involve people in community service.
D.To promote the friendship between cities.

2.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?

A.They were too busy to read a book.
B.They came from many different backgrounds.
C.They had little interest in reading.
D.They lacked support from the local government.

3.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?

A.In large communities with little sense of unity.
B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.
C.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.
D.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.

4.The underlined words "shared a word"in Paragraph 5 probably mean______.

A.discussed the meaning of a word
BA.exchanged ideas with each other
C.gained life experience D.used the same language

5.According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by____.

A.the number of people who benefit from reading
B.the careful selection of a proper book
C.the growing popularity of the writers
D.the number of books that each person reads

Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. In my early 20s, I rarely went to
bed before midnight, and I would almost always get up late the next moming.
But after a while I couldn't ignore the high relationship between success and rising early. On those rare
occasions where I did get up early, I noticed that my productivity was almost always higher. So I set out
to become a habitual early riser. But whenever my alarm went off, my first thought was always to stop that
noise and go back to sleep. Eventually some sleep research showed me that I was using the wrong strategy.
The most common wrong strategy is this: You assume that if you're going to get up earlier, you'd better
go to bed earlier. It sounds very reasonable, but will usually fail.
There are two main schools (流派) of thought on sleep patterns. One is that you should go to bed and get
up at the same time every day. The second says you should go to bed when you're tired and get up when you
naturally wake up. However, I have found both of them are wrong if you care about productivity.
If you sleep at set hours, you'll sometimes go to bed when you aren't sleepy enough. You're wasting time
lying in bed awake and not being asleep. If your sleep is based on what your body tells you, you'll probably
be sleeping more than you need. Also, your mornings may be less predictable if you're getting up at different
times.
The solution for me has been to combine both methods. I go to bed when I'm sleepy and get up with an
alarm clock at a fixed time. So I always get up at the same time (in my case 5 a.m.), but I go to bed at
different times every night-sometimes at 9:30 p.m. and other times at midnight. Most of the time I go to bed
between 10-11 p.m.
However, going to bed only when I'm sleepy, and getting up at a fixed time every morning is my way. If
you want to become an early riser, you can try your own.
1. According to the passage, the underlined phrase refers to _____.
[     ]
A. people who stay up until the next morning
B. people who get up early in the morning
C. people who feel sleepy in the morning
D. people whose productivity is the highest in the morning
2. Why did the author want to become a habitual early riser?
[     ]
A. Because he/she wanted to form the habit of going to bed early and getting up early.
B. Because he/she had found that his/her productivity was higher when he/she got up early.
C. Because he/she wanted to see which of the two main schools of thought on sleep pattems was right.
D. Because he/she was told the high relationship between success and rising early.
3. The author experienced all the following EXCEPT_____.
[     ]
A. going to bed after midnight
B. getting up early occasionally
C. pressing off the alarm to go on sleeping
D. asking scholars for advice on sleeping habits

What's your idea of a good time? What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty
thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look
like ants?
It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer.  Why? Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals.
Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular festival in the UK.  It
began in 1970 and the first festival was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an
admission price of £1 - the ticket included free milk from the farm.
Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength - in 2004 one hundred and fifty
thousand fans attended, paying £112 each for a ticket to the three-day event.  Tickets for the event sold out within three hours.  Performers included superstars, such as Paul McCartney and James Brown, as
well as new talent, like Franz Ferdinand and Joss Stone.
Although many summer festivals are run on a profit -making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event,
donating millions of pounds to local and international charities.
Glastonbury is not unique in using live music to raise money to fight global poverty (贫穷).  In July of
this year, the Live 8 concerts were held simultaneously (同时) in London, Paris, Rome and Berlin.

international poverty and debt.

Every culture has a recognized point when a child becomes an adult, when rules must be followed and
tests passed.
In China, although teenagers can get their ID cards at 16, many only see themselves as an adult when
they are 18. In the US, where everyone drives, the main step to the freedom of adult life is learning to
drive. At 16, American teens take their driving test. When they have their license, they drive into the
grownup world.
"Nobody wants to ride the cheese bus to school," said Eleanor Fulham, 17. She brought the pressure
back to memory, especially for kids from wealthier families. "It's like you're not cool if you don't have a
car," she said.
According to recent research, 41% of 16 to 19yearolds in the US own cars, up from 23% in 1985.
Although, most of these cars are bought by parents, some teens get parttime jobs to help pay.
Not all families can afford cars for their children. In cities with subways and limited parking, some
teenagers don't want them. But in rich suburban areas without subways, and where bicycles are more for
fun than transportation, it is strange for a teenager not to have a car.
But police say 16yearolds have almost three times more accidents than 18 to 19yearolds. This has
made many parents pause before letting their kids drive.
Julie Sussman, of Virginia, decided that her son Chad, 15, will wait until he is 17 to apply for his
learner's permit.
Chad said he has accepted his parents' decision, although it has caused some teasing from his friends. "They say that I am unlucky," he said, "But I'd rather be alive than driving, and I_don't_really_trust_my_
friends_on_the_road,_either."
In China as more families get cars, more 18yearolds learn to drive. Will this become a big step to
becoming an adult?

A. they want to show themselves off
B. they are never experienced drivers

A. he might run into his friends if he drove
B. he didn't agree with his friends
C. he might not be safe if his friends drove
