Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.

What to Expect

The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least Once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.

Accommodation Zones

Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2.3 and 4of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town center as much of central London is commercial and not residential. Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowed area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground.

Meal Plans Available

·Continental Breakfast

·Breakfast and Dinner

·Breakfast, Packed Dinner

It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal, bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit and coffee.

Friends

If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.

Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes

Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long -stay student . However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practice English at home quite as much.

Off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island swim masses of colorful tropical fish. Some of these fish will be caught and sold, ending up in aquariums around the world. Is the industry putting populations of the fish at risk?

Scientists who have studied the Big Island fishery say it is well managed. Rules put in place more than 15 years ago have helped to protect the fish. Along 35% of the coastline, for example, fish collecting is banned. Two years ago, the state cut the number of fish species for the aquarium trade from hundreds to just 40.

Conservationist Robert Wintner objects to the findings. Wintner, who owns snorkel shops across Hawaii, started the Snorkel Bob Foundation to protect the island’s coral reefs(珊瑚礁). He says he simply doesn’t see yellow tang(刺尾鱼)in the protected areas. “There should be millions of them,” he says. “Where are they?”

Wintner says people believe the numbers in reports. But few people have actually dived into the coral reefs to see for themselves how many fish can be found there. According to Wintner, the coral reefs along the coast should be filled with yellow tang, but they are “virtually empty”. Empty reefs are not good for tourism, Wintner points out, which brings out $800 million yearly. By contrast, the aquarium-fish trade brings out just $2 million yearly.

4.WASHINGTON,Nov.25 (Xinhua)--Air pollution is a major risk factor for heart disease,and women with diabetes (糖尿病) may be more likely to be influenced by its effects than others,a long-term U.S.study said Wednesday.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that women with diabetes who are exposed (暴露) to air pollution for long periods may have a much higher risk for heart disease.
"We didn't expect diabetes to be the strongest factor in determining susceptibility (敏感性),"said the lead author Jaime Hart,an epidemiologist at the Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health.
"We looked at age, family history of heart disease, weight, smoking status and areas of the country but diabetes was the most consistent across diseases and across different size fractions of particulate matter (PM),"Hart said.
The research team explored data from more than 100,000participants in a long-term study called the Nurses'Health Study,looking at rates of heart disease,specifically rates of stroke.
They assessed long-term exposure to three different sizes of particulate matter air pollution from 1989to 2006:Fine particulate pollutant smaller than 2.5thousandths of a millimeter in diameter (PM2.5),PM10and PM2.5-10.PM10includes both PM2.5and PM2.5-10.
While all women had small increases in risk of heart events with more air pollution exposure, the increased risk was statistically significant for women with diabetes.
According to the team,an increase of 10micrograms per cubic meter of air pollution in PM2.5,PM2.5-10and PM 10will raise a woman's risk of heart disease by 44percent,17percent and 19percent,separately,if she had type 2diabetes.
The team found that these effects were greater among women 70and older and obese women.
Since the study participants were mostly white women of middle-and upper-socioeconomic status,further research will be needed to determine if these patterns are also seen in men and in racially and socioeconomically diverse populations,they added.

Telemedicine is the name for when doctors give advice to patients by telephone or the Internet,or when health care providers in rural areas connect with specialists in big cities.
Telemedicine has existed for a long time,but the rise of smart phones,tablets and webcam-equipped computers is raising telemedicine to new levels.Some health care systems in the United States now offer Virtual Urgent Care,patients see a doctor by video chat without having to leave home.
Diana Rae is a nurse educator in the western state of Washington.She recently showed how Virtual Urgent Care works.She used an iPad tablet and skype-the video chat service.
Doctor Green has the patient describe her symptoms,then the doctor performs a physical exam by demonstrating what he wants her to do.Doctor Green decides that the problem is a silence infection.For medicine,he prescribes an antibiotic.He says about 3 out of 4 patients have health problems that can be treated like this-through Virtual Urgent Care,that means a video chat could replace a visit to the doctor's office.
The Franciscan Health System is based in Tacoma,Washington.Franciscan charges $35 for this kind of virtual house call,that is much less than the cost of going to an emergency room,a doctor's office or an urgent care clinic.
After trying the video conference,Diana Rae says,"I would've paid twice that for the convenience of getting taken care of without having to sit in a waiting room, wait, and get exposed to everyone else's germs."
Franciscan has a deal with a company called Carena to add virtual urgent care by Skype or phone.Carena is one of several companies doing this kind of work around the country.But a company official says state rules have not kept progress with developments in telemedicine.The workers who provide virtual urgent care must be separately licensed in each state where the company does business.For now,that means Carena doctors can treat patients in Washington state and California for example,but not in neighboring Oregon or Idaho.
29.The second paragraph is mainly used to showC.
A.why telemedicine becomes popular
B.the advantages of telemedicine
C.many factors contribute to telemedicine
D.what telemedicine is

A.through his observation of the patient
B.through a careful examination
C.by knowing what he wants her to do
D.by prescribing an antibiotic
31.The major health problems,in Doctor Green's opinion,B.
A.are tough to deal with
B.can be treated through a video chat
C.should result from work pressure
D.nearly cost little to recover
32.By mentioning what Diana Rae says,the author wants to showB.
A.he finds it convenient to see a doctor by using a video chat
B.he sings high praise for this kind of treatment form
C.he must be tired of waiting too long in the hospital
D.it should be very unhealthy while staying in hospital.

And it's all true.(53)Athe other side of that equation is that the U.S.needs to save more.For the moment,American households actually are doing so.After the personal-savings rate (54)Bto zero in 2005,the shock of the economic (55)Blast year prompted people to snap (56)Ctheir wallets.In China,the household-savings rate exceeds 20%.It is partly for policy(57)A.As we've seen,wage earners are expected to (58)Dnot only their children but their aging parents.And there is,to date,only the flimsiest (脆弱的) of publicly-funded health care and pension systems,which increases incentives for individuals to save (59)Dthey are working.But China is a society that has (60)Aesteemed personal financial prudence (谨慎).There is no (61)Cthat will change anytime soon,even if the government creates a better social safety net and successfully encourages greater consumer spending.
