解析:
Text 1 W:This seems to be a nice place. We don't have to wait in line. M:No, it's early. There aren't many people at this hour. W:Let's go over and get some bread and eggs. Text 2 M:Did you make the speech at the conference yesterday or the day before yesterday? W:Well, actually, it was this morning. Text 3 M:Is it raining outside? W:Is it raining? Look at my clothes-they're all wet. Text 4 M:The front tire is flat and the seat needs to be raised. W:Why not take it to Mr.Smith? Text 5 W:Are you going to Canada or Mexico during your winter vacation? M:Well, I don't enjoy cold weather at all, and Canada is freezing in the winter time. Text 6 W:Jiffy Pizza. Can I take your order? M:Yes.I'd like a large pizza. W:What kind of toppings would you like on that? M:Uh, I don't know. What toppings can I order? W:Well, we've got sausage, bacon, ham, pineapple, mushrooms, tomatoes, and green peppers. M:Hmm…I'll have sausage and mushrooms. No…wait…let me change that.I'd like ham and pineapple on it. W:Okay. That comes to…ten ninety.May I have your name, address, and phone number? M:Uh, my name's John Smith.I'm at 533 Rosewood Avenue, and you can reach me at 876-2345. W:Okay. We'll be there at 5∶15. M:In half an hour? Great, thanks! Text 7 W:Sir, I would like to make two requests.First I'd like an 18% pay raise. M:That's just not possible right now. W:But I think my role is very important to the company, and I have been performing my duties admirably. M:You did a good job. It's true, but I could never allow such a large pay increase. What was the other request? W:I'd like to reduce my working hours to six days a week. M:That's fine, as long as you get all of your work done. The pay raise, however, is out of the question. W:I really must insist.Otherwise I will seek for other employment. M:Well, if you cannot compromise, you can clear out your desk. It's your choice. Text 8 My niece is turning 8 next week and I decided to buy her a new pet.I walked into a big pet store and looked around.I saw cages with dogs and cats. There were also bird cages with birds of every color.I even saw some snakes! Finally, I was taken to the back of the store. There I saw big tanks full of fish.I was told that with the right equipment, we don't have to clean the tank regularly and that all we have to do is feed the fish.I was glad to find a pet that wouldn't be too much of a bother. The next time I visited my niece, she told me she loved her fish. She had named them all.She even named one after me.It was called “Jeffish.”Get it? Now, she's happy and so are her parents.Just before I left, my niece asked me:“When can we go to Disneyland?” Ah, the work of an uncle is never done. Text 9 W:How much is the blue one? M:It's $32. W:$32?What about the green one? M:That's $30. W:That seems a little high. Can you do better on the price? M:This is a designer bag and it's good quality. It's a bargain at that price. W:Is that your best offer? M:That's the best I can do. W:Well, I don't know.I think I'll shop around. M:Okay, how about $28? W:That's still more than I wanted to spend. What if I take the blue one and the green one? M:I'll give you both of them for $55. W:That's not much of a break on the price. How about $50 for both? M:You drive a hard bargain. The best I can do is $54.You won't find it cheaper anywhere else. W:Why don't we split the difference and make it $52? M:Okay, okay. You've got a deal. Text 10 W:Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the Cross Bakery building? M:The Cross Bakery building? Oh sure. You're actually walking in the opposite direction. W:Oh, you're kidding! I thought I was heading east. M:No, east is the other direction.Go down the road until you hit Broadway. Then make a left turn and the building is on your left hand side.Do you want me to show you the way? W:Thanks for the offer, but I think I've got it.Hopefully, I won't get lost again on my way there! Text 11 It's that time of year again. It's award show season. No, I'm not talking about the Nobel Prizes.I'm talking about the entertainment awards. Many stars get together at award ceremonies and the winners are announced. My favorites are the Emmy Awards for television, the Academy Awards for the movies, and the Grammy Awards for records. But, I'm up for almost any award show-the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, even the People's Choice Awards. For some people, the best part of watching the award shows is the pre-show.The stars arrive on the red carpet and are interviewed.Sometimes what they are wearing, made by the top designers and jewelers, gets more attention than anything they say. But, as for me, the most exciting part is when the winners are announced and you never know what will come out of their mouths when they win-or better yet-when they lose. |
