第二节 读写任务

A Little at a Time

Carl Walter was my piano teacher. During one of my lessons he asked how much practice I was doing. I said three or four hours a day.

"Do you practice in long stretches, an hour at a time?"

   "'I try to."

"Well, do not," he exclaimed." When you grow up, time won't come in long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school, after lunch, between chores. Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life."

Years later when I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write, but recitations, theme-reading, and meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time. Then I recalled what my piano teacher said to me.

During the next week I conducted an experiment. Whenever I had five minutes unoccupied(空闲的), I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so. To my astonishment, at the end of the week I had written quite a lot. Later on I wrote novels by the same piecemeal(零碎的) method. Though my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, every day there were idle (空闲的)moments which could be caught and put to use. I even took up piano-playing again, finding that the small interval of the day provided enough time for both writing and piano practice.

第二节:读写任务:(共25分)

One possible version:

   January12   Friday    Sunny

Today I read a very good essay. It is about how the author realized her dream as a writer even though she was a busy fulltime teacher. She managed it by making good use of every idle minute.

After reading it, I was shocked and at the same time I felt sorry for myself. I am a middle school student. I have always been complaining about the lack of time: there is not enough time for me to memorize so many English words so I take it for granted that I should be poor in English; I don't have the time to help with the housework; I seldom have any time for sports...

I've come to understand where my problem is. From now on, I will learn to manage well my time. First I will make good plans and preparations beforehand so that I can concentrate on my task and make good use of every minute. In this way, I am sure I will have enough time for my study, sports, let alone helping with the housework. Remember: make every minute count.

 Liu Feng    Blog              My 18th Birthday      2010- 4-14 9:29:2

Today is my 18th birthday, which means that from now on, I am an adult, so it is very fresh to me. I can not forget the happiness and love that my family and friends have given me. To show their love and affection, they held a great ceremony for me at home, and also sent me many kinds of presents, which have left me with great memories.

However, the most unforgettable thing is : a small gift from my English teacher, Jesse.

This morning, after class, Jesse approached me and said “Happy Birthday and here is a card for you”. After thanking him, I carefully opened it:

“Dear Liu Feng,

I sincerely hope the 18th birthday will bring you great happiness all through your life. I have been with you for almost one year, and I find you are a good boy. You are working hard and doing fine in your study, and also I’d like you to have a little change in yourself. Since last month, when you failed in the exam, you have become shy and passive, you seem to have closed your world from others and hesitate to be together with them, which I think is not good for you. To adapt yourself to your future college and social life, find yourself an active life!

Yours,

Jesse”

Reading this, I was moved to tears…

The generation gap between students and teachers is becoming more significant with only 3.3 percent out of a survey group of 1,000 students from 30 key middle schools in the city saying they would be willing to tell their teachers of their inner thoughts.

In today’s educational environment, teachers are positioned to be the authority figure for learning instead of also becoming good friends in the life of students.

As only students with good marks in exams are considered the “ apples in the eyes” of the teachers, most students think their teachers to be partial (偏心).

“ I feel sad to hear such remarks”, said Yu Yi , a well-known special-class teacher.

She recalled that in the past, teachers and students would play basketball together or comment on the novels while sitting on the grass during a break. But today, study and good marks are the only topics of conversation between students and teachers.

“Schools are not only the place where knowledge is imparted (传授) but also where students are taught how to be an upright person,” Yu said. “The success of a person is not merely determined by intelligence but also by emotional state. ”

Yang Xiong, director of the Juvenile Research Institute, said the educational system which focuses on examinations should be held to be substantially responsible.
