students with the highest GPAs. However, this just isn't even close to true. There are scholarships out
there for every type of student seeking a college education. Let's take a look at each type a bit more in
depth.
     Academic Scholarships
     Academic scholarships are also often referred to as merit (优点) scholarships, though a merit
scholarship can mean anything that has some level of contest to it. These are fox; the students with the
4.0 GPAs, the years as a part of several extracurricular (课外的) activities and the well- rounded
applications. They typically have the highest payouts and are considered very well- known as they are
often national awards.
     Athletic Scholarships
     For students with strong academics (学业的) and physical skills, athletic scholarships are the way
to go. There is practically a scholarship for every single sport, from volleyball to football; gymnastics to
cheerleading. So, if you are good at anything physical, you should definitely pursue an athletic scholarship.
     Scholarships for Minorities
     There are also many scholarships for minorities available. Some of these are general and for "all
minorities as a collective whole, while others are intended for individual ethnic (种族的) groups. It is
also a good idea to apply for a minority scholarship if you are part of fully of a certain ethnicity. You
will get to represent your culture and possibly win money -- what more could you ask for?
     Scholarships for Women
     As with the scholarships for minorities above, there are also scholarships specifically for women.
Since colleges were dominated (主宰) by men for many years, scholarships have been created for
strong, career-minded women that need assistance paying for college expenses. If you are female, it is
strongly recommended you pursue a scholarship for women. Moreover, scholarships for women are

A Giant Leap for China

　　A few days ago, he was just Colonel(上校)Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face．But last Thursday, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei’s smile was seen across the world above the magic words：“China’s first spaceman”．

　　The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9 a. m．Last Wednesday by China’s Shenzhou Ⅴ spacecraft, which orbited the earth 14 times．He landed safely at 6∶23 a. m．The next day, making China the third country successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US．

　　Yang was satisfied with his job．“I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful, ”He said on a special plane to Beijing after landing．Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987, spending 1350 hours in the air．He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later．

　　While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China’s national flag and the United Nations’ flag to the people watching on TV at home．He also ate a meal of diced chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap．The whole project went according to plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems．

United Nations Climate Change Conference

The U.N. Climate Change conference opened in Copenhagen, Denmark on Dec.7th with some 15,000 delegates and observers from nearly 200 countries attending what is called the last best chance for an agreement to combat(与……战斗) global warming.

Their aim is to find common ground, including on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, promotion and transfer of new more eco-friendly technology and the necessary funding to make this possible, especially for the less developed and poorer nations. It also means coming up with long term vision and cooperation for the future.

Most scientists believe the warming trend is mainly caused by human activity, especially the use of fossil fuels(矿物燃料) and the cutting down of forests. Skeptics(怀疑论者) say global warming is part of a natural cycle of climate change.

In Copenhagen, experts and officials alike are putting the emphasis on what people and governments can do to cut the emission of greenhouse gases.

Scientists say a 25 to 40 percent cut in carbon-dioxide emissions is needed to control global warming. The European Union, China, and India have already pledged(保证) reductions. The United States is waiting for Congressional(国会的) approval for a proposal put forward by the Obama administration.
