Making greener choices and encouraging healthy lifestyles can promote your health and benefit the environment. Here are some guidelines to follow:

Choose foods thoughtfully

Americans have never had such a variety or abundance of food to choose from. Besides so many choices, we now hear about our “food print”, the amount of land needed to supply one person’s nutritional needs for a year. Do we buy cherry tomatoes from Mexico or tomatoes grown locally in a hothouse? Do we get the Granny Smiths from the farmers’ market or the supermarket? Is organic produce healthier for us and the planet?

These are very complex issues that require analysis of many criteria, including the energy used in producing and transporting the food, as well as the type of soil and methods of raising the food.

Despite the complexities, there are some general guidelines you can follow. For instance, eat less meat or eat low on the food chain. Your doctor may have recommended you to restrict your consumption of red meat because of its too much fat content. Beyond that, there are environmental reasons, too. Raising food animals contributes substantially to climate change because a meat-based diet requires more land, energy and water than a plant-based one.

Drinking plenty of fluids is significant during hot weather or when exercising. But is bottled water the way to go? You may not think so when seeing the true costs. Based on a survey, manufacturing the 30-plus billion plastic water bottles can produce more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide and use three times the amount of water in the bottle. Adding in transportation, the energy used comes to over 50 million barrels of oil equivalent (等价物). Consequently, skip the bottled water and drink tap water, both at home and at restaurants. Additionally, bottled water is not necessarily cleaner than tap.

In Paragraph 2 the author puts forward three questions mainly ______.

A. to prove Americans have less food to choose from

B. to show us the shopping habits of most Americans

C. to indicate Americans tend to buy food from abroad

D. to remind people to reconsider their food purchase

According to the text, which of the following is true?

A. Americans all prefer to buy cherry tomatoes from Mexico.

B. The plant-based diet is responsible for the climate change.

C. Americans have a variety of food to choose from.

D. Organic produce is the only choice for Americans.

Based on the last paragraph, we know that ______.

A. bottled water is cleaner than tap water

B. tap water is economical as well as eco-friendly

C. bottled water is more available than tap water

D. tap water uses one-third the cost of bottled water

What is the best subtitle for the last paragraph?

C. Produce plastic water bottles           D. Save water resources

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

There is a forgotten player in the global efforts to limit CO2 emissions:the consumer.Households consume one-third of the final energy used in the European Union and produce around two-thirds of city waste. Moreover, food, housing, and private transport account for almost 80% of environmental pressures. So consumers can make a real difference when it comes to fighting climate change.

Several factors can direct consumers towards more environmentally-friendly behavior. To achieve this, we need clear and simple information to guide consumption decisions。Indeed. Two thirds of consumers find it difficult to understand which products are better for the environment when shopping.

With 58% of Europeans believing that many companies pretend to be green in order to charge higher prices, industry has a long way to go in helping consumers feel confident when making green choices. They should give consumers more information about the carbon footprint of their products, and promote more sustainable behavior among their customers.

To be sure, companies are increasingly creating product labels that help consumers make responsible choices-for instance, reminding users of products made from materials that are recycled, renewable, and/or less carbon-intensive.Even so, only, 20% of Europeans believe that companies are doing enough to promote environmentally friendly options.

In times of crisis, consumers prefer high-quality products that will last long and won't go out of style.Durable products might sometimes cost more, but they don't need to be replaced as frequently. In this way, companies that create durable or recyclable products enable consumers to think differently about their purchases, which can help users behave more responsibly, and thus may help end our “throw-way” culture.

However, it is not enough to inform consumers of the environmental features of products. We also need to provide consumers with guidance to establish a practical lifestyle model to follow. This cannot be brought about by regulations alone, but by good business communities that would create a loyal group of “sustainable consumers”.

How old was I? I can’t recall. Maybe I was only 10, about to turn 11, making it the first Christmas after my father left, and left me to fill that sad, shattered place in my mother’s heart. Whenever it was, it was the Christmas the magic changed: the year I stopped being a wide-eyed child and tried eagerly to play Father Christmas myself. It was the Christmas of the coat.
Mom first saw the coat at Tobias, one of the nicer women’s stores in our town’s little mall. It was a deep forest green. A long, heavy, wool dress coat with side pockets. Mom pulled it out from the rack(架) and held it up. “Long enough,”she murmured and slipped it on.
“I need a new coat,” Mom smiled before the three-way mirror. She made any clothing look good, and this coat hugged her just right. She glanced at the price tag, then hung the coat back on the rack, pausing once more to feel the smooth brush of wool.
Eighty-seven dollars. But I didn’t think twice. As we moved on through the mall, I found some excuse to come back and ask one of the Tobias ladies to hold the coat.
At last I had the coat. The store ladies wrapped it in their biggest box with bright blue paper and a thick silver ribbon. I don’t remember how I got it home, but I can still feel the bursting excitement and pride that filled me each time I glimpsed at the beautifully wrapped gift hiding under my sweater. I would occasionally dig it out just to hold the box, to imagine the big space it would take up under our tree. Here it was ─ joy, peace, and love ─ all wrapped up, waiting for Mom’s loving gratitude.
36. That the writer’s mother felt the coat before they left the store showed that ____.
A. the coat was of good quality                 B. the coat was too expensive
C. she liked the coat very much                D. she’d get it in the end
37. The writer tried to act as Father Christmas in order to ____.
A. show he grew up                                               B. show he missed his father
C. bring his mother a surprise                            D. enjoy himself
38. The writer hid the coat under his sweater in order to ____.
A. imagine the space taken up under the Christmas tree
B. feel the strong feeling to his mother on Christmas
C. give his mother a big surprise on Christmas Day
D. keep the new coat tidy and orderly in the box
39. What can be the best title of this passage?
A. A Merry Christmas                                  B. Christmas of the Coat
C. A Deep Green Coat                                 D. Mother’s Merry Christmas

For the past many centuries, people had been enjoying the benefits of green tea for the body. Many people would prefer drinking green tea than white tea and black tea, simply because of its distinct aroma(香味) not found in other types of tea. Nowadays, keeping the natural greenish color of tea leaves remained just like before. This is done by preparing the green tea just like the way it was prepared before—by washing the leaves right after pulling off them from the bush, then boiling them.
There have been many healthful claims saying that drinking green tea-based products help a lot in improving the general health of their body. For a long time, there has been many beliefs saying that green tea can help, cure beriberi disease(脚气病), treat wounds, and even prevent tiredness. Now modern technology determines that there are even added healthful benefits that include reducing the possibility of having a heart disease and helping people to lose more weight easily.
Besides, studies have found out that green tea has Polyphenols(多酚类), a type of flaonoid(类黄酮) that greatly reduces the amount of time of cell maturation. The flavonoid found in green tea is called EGCg- a stronger matter than Vitamin C and E. It is believed to be 20 times stronger than these mentioned vitamins.
Having two cups of green tea daily is a good routine for your body. However, most doctors would suggest drinking at least 4 cups a day is the best. You can slowly increase the amount of drinking it to allow your body to get used to it. There is nothing to lose but everything to gain in drinking green tea.
