  By Five-year-old Pepper has learned to open windows and let himself out every night by hopping onto a kitchen worktop and using his paws to turn the latch.

  So when a fire broke out while his owners were Christmas shopping,the quickthinking puss leapt into action and opened the window to allow the acrid smoke to escape.

  Sharon and her husband Phil were handed Pepper over four years ago after a neighbour could no longer look after it. Pepper developed a "fierce independent streak" and would often leave the house for days on end.

  The dramatic fire started at 4p. m. on Saturday after the couple nipped to the shops and left their microwave on a ten minute timer,which then caught fire.

  Sharon said , " We put something in the microwave for ten minutes and then popped out to do our Christmas shopping in the local town. I discovered on the way that I had left my purse at home but decided not to turn around. It was my sister-in-law who lives next door that rang us about two hours into our trip and said , ' You had better get home as there is quite a lot of smoke coming out of your house and the fire brigade are here. ' We are thankful our neighbours did not just dismiss the smoke as a bonfire."

  Firefighters rushed to their £ 350,000 house and extinguished the flames before they could spread,and the kitchen suffered only smoke damage. There was some damage to the kitchen,but it was isolated,so nothing serious happened compared to what it could have been.

 The United States government wants to know what the public thinks about its findings on the safety of cloned animals.

  The Food and Drug Administration says meat and milk from clones of adult cattle,pigs and goats are safe to eat. An F. D. A. official called them "as safe to eat as the food we eat every day. " And when those clones reproduce sexually,the agency says,their offspring (后代) are safe to eat as well. But research on cloned sheep is limited. So the F. D. A. proposes that sheep clones not be used for human food.

  The United States this year could become the first country to approve the sale of foods from cloned animals. First,however,the public will have ninety days to comment on three proposed documents. On December 28th the F. D. A. released a long report,called a draft risk assess?ment,along with two policy documents.

  The agency says it must receive comments by April second. The F. D. A. seemed ready to act several years ago,but an advisory committee called for more research.

  For now,the government will continue to ask producers to honor a request that they not sell foods from cloned animals.

  Clones are still rare. They cost a lot and are difficult to produce.

  The F. D. A. says most food from cloning is expected to come not from clones themselves,but from their sexually reproduced offspring. It says clones are expected to be used mostly as breeding animals to spread good qualities.

  Public opinion studies show most Americans do not like the idea of food from cloned ani?mals. But this research also shows the public knows little about cloning.

 We know the famous ones―the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells,but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器) ? Shouldn't we know who they are?

  Joan McLean thinks so. In fact,McLean,a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range,feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic.   So,just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well,Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy,but Anderson still wanted to see the sights,so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield,she found herself wondering why there couldn't be a builtin device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham,Alabama,Anderson started drafting out solutions.
