M:Don't worry about it. I can send it to the laundry. Text 2 W:May I clean your mom now, sir? M:No, will you come back in half an hour? And will you please bring me my breakfast here? I've just ordered a cup of coffee and some toast. W:Certainly. Right now? M:Yes, please. Text 3 M:You look very busy. Can I give you a hand? W:That would be great. I'm cleaning the house because my friend is coming for coffee. M:Ok, what can I do? W:Could you do the vacuuming? The vacuum cleaner is over there. Text 4 W:Are you worried about getting a job after graduation? M:No. I've had several good interviews, and I can always work for my dad for a while. Text 5 M:Mary, have you finished your paper? W:Yes, I worked on it for three weeks and read many reference books. Oh, Tom, could you do me a favor? I need someone to return these books to the library for me. Text 6 W:Good morning, Mr Sharp. I'm awfully sorry I'm late. M:You're late every morning, Miss Smith. You were late Tuesday, yesterday… don't you have a watch? W:Yes, but it wasn't my fault. I stood in the rain for an hour this morning. I waited and waited for a bus, and then when one came, it was full. M:How about yesterday and the day before yesterday? W:Well, I came by taxi yesterday and… M. And you were still late! And Tuesday? W:Tuesday I went to see the doctor and I waited for my turn for about two hours. It was terrible! M:And tomorrow, Miss Smith? Text 7 M:Can I help you, Madam? W:Yes. I like this blue dress. How much is it? M:Thirty pounds. W:Oh, that's quite expensive. And it looks too big for me. M:Yes, it is. It's XL. W:How much is that dress over there? The short green one. M:Fifteen fifty. W:Ah, that's not too expensive. And the color is very nice. M:But I think it's not big enough for you, Madam. It's a small size. W:Yes, this is too small for me. Have you something like this, but bigger? I'm of average size. M:Just a moment, please, Madam. Text 8 W:Come on, you'd better eat up quickly, Kevin, it's getting late. M:I don't want it! W:Oh, go on, carrots are good for you. M:I don't like things that are good for me. W:Well, you ought to and anyway they make you see in the dark. M:No, they don't. I can't see in the dark. W:You can if you eat more carrots. M:You eat a lot of carrots, but can you see in the dark? W:Of course, I can… What are you doing? M:Turning off the light… there… I've eaten all my carrots! W:I don't believe you. M:Well, can you see them? It's dark now. Can you see in the dark? Text 9 M:Can you tell me how to get to the Music Building from here? I have a lecture to attend there. W:Oh, are you new here? M:Yea, I just got here last night. W:Well, to go to the Music Building, you have two choices. If you want to go right now, you can walk straight down this street until you're past a post-office, and then turn right. The Music Building will be straight ahead. M:How long will it take to get there? W:About twenty minutes. M:What's my other choice? W:If you don't mind waiting around for a while, you can take the shuttle bus. The bus only takes about five minutes to get there. M:But I have to wait for the bus? W:That's right. M:Well, I guess I might as well walk. Text 10 The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years more. There are over eighty of them along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shapes from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid. Some of the pyramids still look much the same as they must have when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage was caused by men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to protect the pyramids, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruins. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important thing is that they were planned to last forever. It is certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids. However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. But now by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, we have formed a fairly clear picture of them. |
