"We're at the dawn of a golden age of audio,"said US-based podcaster Alex Blumberg in an article in The Sydney Morning Herald.In the last month alone,15percent of US adults listened to a radio podcast. These data, released by Edison Research, reveal the successful
evolution of traditional radio broadcasts to the present day's digital podcast format(播客形式).The term"podcast,"was coined in 2004,but the trend only started gaining mainstream popularity in recent years.Since the leap in consumer demand for smart phones and tablets,podcast subscription rates have only accelerated.

podcasts, but recently I've also been tuning into This American Life and Serial."
Unlike television and music, the audio format has the ability to create a deep impression
on readers.Blumberg says this comes down to the podcast's ability"to create emotional connection."Sydney University undergraduate Hazel Proust, major in social work and arts,
agrees."When you're tuned in,it feels as if the podcaster is talking directly to you.It's comforting,"said Proust.

8.How has smoking been controlled in recent years?
People were asked to stop smoking in a range of public places over the second half of the 20th century but it was after the King's Cross Underground fire on November 18,1987,caused by a cigarette end which resulted in 31deaths,that restrictions on smoking in public places gained rapid and widespread acceptance.
How did a ban on smoking in public places come into place?
In 1998the Smoking Kills White Paper set out a national strategy to reduce smoking prevalence (流行) and passive smoking,including in public places.The measures were voluntary and poorly carried out.After a public conference in England in 2004,the Government decided to choose for lawmaking.Scotland went first,with a ban in 2006,followed by the other nations a year later.
What is the current law?
Any person who smokes in enclosed public places,including pubs,offices,on public transport and work vehicles,is breaking the law.It does not extend to private houses.It is also an offence for people in charge of premises (营业场所) to permit others to smoke in them.
How was it received?
It was welcomed by most organizations-except for some pub owners and restaurateurs.All railway facilities are covered,as are all football grounds and stadiums.School grounds are not required to be smoke-free under the legislation(法规),but the majority now are.
How has it been forced?
Compliance (服从) in public premises has been high,with inspections suggesting that 99per cent of places were sticking to the rules.The number of people charged for smoking in cars has been very low,which was due to the problems defining and identifying"work"vehicles.They said that a total ban on smoking in vehicles would end this confusion.
Has it improved health?
Studies in early adopters of the law suggest a reduction in hospital admissions for heart disease,which has been shown to be linked to passive smoking.There is also strong evidence of a drop in the number of cigarettes consumed by those who continue to smoke.

64.When did the first law come out to ban smoking in public places?D

D.Max smokes for relaxation during time-out in the stadium.

D.Most of the school grounds are not smoke-free,as it is not banned in the law.
18.April 22,2010 will be the 18th celebration of the annual Take Our Daughters to Work Day (TOD),a project the National Ms.Foundation for Women of America (NFW) developed to expose girls to expanding opportunities for women in the workplace.
The program offers, millions of girls a first-hand view of the many career opportunities available in their futures. Now that women make up 46 percent of the U.S.workforce,girls can find role models in every occupational field-from politics to molecular biology to professional athletics,to name just a few.TOD encourages girls to focus on their abilities and opportunities, not just their appearance.
The NFW developed the project more than a decade ago to address the self-esteem problems that many girls experience when they enter adolescence. At school, boys often receive more encouragement in the classroom, especially in math.science and computer science, the academic fields that tend to lead to the highest salaries.Women receive on average only 73 cents for every dollar that men are paid.and remain vastly underrepresented (数量不足) in top executive positions and technology fields.TOD aims to give girls the confidence and inspiration they need to develop successful careers, particularly in non-traditional fields.
Perhaps because the program had become so widespread and successful,TOD had been criticized for excluding boys, and it was expanded in 2003to include boys. The program's official website states that the program was changed in order to provide both boys and girls with opportunities to explore careers at an age when they are more flexible in tenns of gender stereotyped roles."We should also show boys that becoming a child care provider is as acceptable a choice as becoming a police officer or CEO,"added Sara K.Gould.executive director of the NFW.

5.Virginia is set to begin enforcing the toughest drunken-driving punishment, one that will require thousands of first-time offenders-whether they were highly drunk or slightly over the limit-to install in their cars blood-alcohol testing devices that can lock the ignition. The devices work like this-A driver must blow into a blood alcohol device linked to the car's ignition. If the result is higher than the legal limit, the car will not start. The device also requires random"rolling retests"once the driver is on the road.
Virginia's current law requires only repeated offenders or those with a blood alcohol level of 0.15 or higher to have an ignition interlock device in their cars.
The new law, which takes effect in July, will roughly increase the number of people required to use ignition interlock devices four times, and offenders will have to pay about $ 480 for a typical six-month installation.
The measure has caused a debate between groups battling drunken driving and those representing offenders.Such groups as Mother Against Drunken Driving and The Washington Regional Alcohol Program say that Virginia's 274 alcohol-related road deaths and more than 5,500 injuries in 2010 remained unacceptably high despite years of cracking down on drunken driving.Ignition interlock devices, they say, reduce repeat offenses. But some public defenders and lawyers argue that the devices are too severe a punishment for offenders at the legal blood alcohol limit 0.08,and that the court system will be burdened by more cases going to trial and lower-income drivers will be affected by the fees.
Del.Sal R.Iaquinto, who sponsored the bill, had a simple reply for concerns about the costs of the interlock devises:"How much does a life cost?""Blowing into a tube for six months, you will remember that,"Iaquinto said,"And you're not likely to offend again."

3.It happened to me recently.I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President.A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was,in his words,"a brilliantly (精彩地)written book".However,he then went on to talk about Mr.Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all.I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one.Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't.In the World Book Day's"Report on Guilty Secrets",Dreams From My Father is at number 9.The report lists ten books,and various authors,which people have lied about reading,and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out),I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten.But I am pleased to say that,unlike 42percent of people,I have read the book at number one,George Orwell's 1984.I think it's really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it.It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen,Charles Dickens,Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven't read him,but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied,the most common reason was to"impress"someone they were speaking to.Thiscould be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth!
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy,people named J.K.Rowling,John Grisham,Sophie Kinsella (ah,the big sellers,in other words).Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I'll come clean:I do this and am astonished that 58percent said they had never done so).

32.How did the author find his friend a book liar?D
A.By judging his manner of speaking.
B.By looking into his background.
C.By mentioning a famous name.
D.By discussing the book itself.
33.Which of the following is a"guilty secret"according to the World Book Day report?B

D.Dreams From My Father is hardly read.
34.By lying about reading,a person hopes toB.
A.control the conversation
B.appear knowledgeable
C.learn about the book
D.make more friends

A.Favorable.
B.Uncaring
