Born in a small town near Portsmouth in 1812, Charles Dickens was able to attend school for only two years thanks to the poor economic condition of his family. Worse still, he had to begin work in a factory to help support the family at a young age of 12 as his father was jailed for debt. Nevertheless, he taught himself various kinds of knowledge, which enabled him to attain some other jobs before he turned writer in 1833. His writing career was so successful that he became the most popular writer in Britain when his comic book Pickwick Papers came out in 1837. Charles Dickens later became concerned about the social welfare and died as an influential writer in 1870 at the age of 58.
