【题目】Editor Henry Slocum,

I read your May 10th article in the local newspaper Honesdale Times about electronic books,or e-books,with great interest. You made several good points about the disadvantages of e-books.You may have overlooked, however, some of the ways in which they are superior to traditional books.Yes,e-books are expensive, but they are also convenient. In addition, due to their environment-friendly nature, e-books have the potential to change our planet for the better.

E-books, for anyone who is unfamiliar with the term, are about the same size and shape as regular books. They have a large screen in the middle, however. This screen shows the reader a page of text that has been downloaded from a computer.Once the reader has finished reading the page on the e-book screen.he or she scrolls down to see a new page. The process continues until the entire book has been read.

As you pointed out.Mr.Slocum,it's great to lie on a warm, sandy beach with a book. You can do that just as easily with an e-book as you can with a traditional paper book.In fact, because e-books are so light, you can carry them anywhere.Say,for example, that you like to read on the bus.Which would you rather carry with you-a heavy 800-page novel,or an e-book that weighs only a few ounces?

Another important advantage is offered by e-books as well. They are more environmentfriendly than traditional books. At present, thousands of trees are cut down each year to meet the publishing industry’s demand for paper.Books that don’t sell are eventually returned to the Dublisher and destroyed. This terrible waste could be avoided if everyone used e-books,which require no paper.

Sincerely,

David Eng

【题目】Susan Williams went to a boarding school. Here is one of the letters she wrote to her parents from the school.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal校长is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.

The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.

As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire. There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning. The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.

The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.

I am very sorry about this.

Much love, Susan.

P.S. None of the above is true, but I have failed my exams. I just want you to know how bad things could have been!

【题目】Although I started learning English during my college years, when I entered the States, I only understood two English words “Yes” and “No”. We learned many grammar rules but we could not make the language connections to the real English world. Languagefrustrationworries almost all first generation immigrants. For example, I got a letter from a Chinese-American who has lived in the States for a long time and has a good IT job saying “My 11-year-old girl writes quite well, but as her parents, we could not even read her article.”In addition, my Chinese-American professor friend has difficulty reading a novel. Improving our English skills has become a long journey for all of us. Honestly, if I have a chance, I really want to reach out to everyone in the world who has had a similar experience: learning a second language in adulthood. I wish I could encourage them to speak out about the culture shock, frustration they felt about the differences between West and East.

I have mainly focused on my English writing since 2008 after I found “Literacy Volunteers”, an organization that specially focuses on helping immigrants improve their English. I decided to challenge myself, writing a story like an American. I saw many wonderful Americans there. As soon as I met my teacher Alice, I asked her to be my private language tutor and have taken Tims English class. Every week Alice and I have worked on my English essays sentence by sentence.

To observe the culture differences between West and East, occasionally, I posted a few of my English essays online. I mentioned previously about American culture; when people read the same article or even face the same situation, American and Chinese act very differently. In my viewpoint, these differences make America the strongest country in the world. I know you have the right to express your own opinions, but accusing others without proof is not acceptable.

1The underlined word “frustration” in the first paragraph means .

A. failure and setbacks B. words and problems

C. understanding and progress D. slang and idioms

2In the passage, “Literacy Volunteers” is .

A. only intended to help the Chinese-Americans

B. an organization which is set up to make a profit

C. of great use to people like the author

D. a school showing how to enjoy literature

3From the last paragraph we can learn that .

A. Americans and Chinese are of the same idea about something

B. culture shock only exists between Chinese and Americans

C. accusing others freely can be acceptable in America

D. culture differences have great influence on the people

4The purpose of the passage is .

A. to show how hard a Chinese-American lives in America

B. to share her experience of improving her English

C. to imply grammar rules are not important

D. to warn Chinese-Americans of English

【题目】Wrong Reasons for Going to College

A college education can be priceless.1If any of these following factors had a big influence on your decision, you’re probably right to second-guess yourself.

Because all your friends are going.

In only a few weeks’ time, the whole friend group will be scattered to a half dozen different colleges in a half dozen different places. Not to go will set yourself apart. 2

Because someone else expects it from you.

Perhaps you come from a family where everyone goes to college. Or maybe, you’re the kid that everyone is proud to believe will be the first to get there. 3. It’s become so much a part of the air you breathe that you’ve never stopped to consider whether you want to go or whether you’re ready to go.

4

It’s been tough to find even a summer job. You don’t have an alternative plan. Everyone else is doing it(see above). You think you might as well go to school. That is the lamest(无说服力的) of reasons to spend $20,000 or more in the next year.

Because you are afraid you’ll regret it if you don’t go.

Your uncle tells you that his one regret in life is that he didn’t go to college. Others tell you that they could have gone so much farther in their career if only they had a college education.5So this is not a persuasive reason for you to go to college.

A. Because you don’t know what else to do.

B. It seems that for years everyone has just assumed that of course you’ll go.

C. Because you don’t want to work.

D. But maybe in your heart you know that you are going for the wrong reasons.

E. Friends will wonder what’s wrong with you

F. Everyone seems more excited than you are.

G. Whatever the story is, there are always people who regret decisions they’ve made.
