There is no doubt about it. The best way to learn new words is to do it unconsciously. I don’t mean while you’re unconscious. I mean while you are unconscious of the fact that it is sinking in.

That is how I learnt the 30,000 words in my vocabulary by living in an English-speaking world, mother tongue. I just pick them up. But some of them may be misunderstood. Now, to misunderstand does not mean not to understand. To misunderstand is to understand but incorrectly.

The 5 % mislearnt of all the words we “know” will be the least frequently used words, as the more frequently used words are less likely to be mislearnt. Some of the misunderstandings may live with all our lives, without knowing that we got them wrong.

Many English teachers think that this natural method of learning words in one’s own mother tongue can be used for a second language learning. They teach their students how to play the Guessing Game. “There is no time to look up in your dictionaries all the new words you come across,” they will say. “You have to practise guessing what the word means from the context.”

This method of guessing in a second language learning does not work. It may succeed in many cases, but results in hundreds or thousands of wrongly-guessed meanings of words.

And what’s more, there are more separate meanings than there are words themselves. Our learners’ dictionaries usually have many meanings. A good dictionary is what makes self-learning possible.

    Don’t guess! Look it up!

I grew depressed (沮丧的), even as my husband Charlie’s career skyrocketed. He was a NASA astronaut. I was excited for him when he began training to go to the moon, and I involved (潜心于) myself with the flight as much as possible, but I was really looking forward to it being over. Inside I was hoping that once he got this goal behind him, he would put me first.

But he didn’t. He still had that workaholic(工作狂) drive. He was still following a list of goals which I was still down near the bottom of. I considered breaking up but I wondered if any man could love me the way I wanted to be loved. Was there even such a thing as the perfect marriage? I didn’t wish it anymore. However, in his eyes, our marriage certainly hadn’t delivered any satisfaction, so within several years we were heading full-speed toward breaking up.

I began to look for other things to satisfy me. I tried a career. I tried church work. I helped the needy. Nothing worked. I even tried drugs, but they didn’t work either. I thought, maybe there was no purpose in life. Didn’t that seem strange? I was married to a famous man, had a nice home and healthy children, plenty of money, yet I had no hope.

I also discovered God, and I believed He wanted to change me. I found He wanted me to forgive Charlie, so I tried that, although I felt it was impossible. But over a two-month period, God freed me of my anger and helped me love Charlie unconditionally.

59. According to the passage, what can we infer from the marriage between Charlie and his wife?

A. It was a mistake to marry Charlie.

B. There is no such a thing as a perfect marriage.

C. It was God that helped them love each other again.

D. Their marriage was saved because of the wife’s forgiveness.

60. What’s the author’s attitude towards her marriage in the end?

A. Positive.    B. Puzzling.    C. Negative.    D. Indifferent.

China Earthquake Leaves 5,000 Homeless

Beijing- An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale left 50,000 people homeless, killed at least one person and injured 39 others in southwest China on Thurday, with more accidents expected.

By late Thurday, 4,900 people were declared homeless after the quake destroyed their homes in a mountainous area lying on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The dawn quake left one dead and 39 injured, destroyed 268 houses and damaging 1,132 other  buildings so seriously that they were considered uninhabitable.

Another 2,400 houses suffered less serious damage. The epicenter( 震中 ) was near scenic Lugu Lake, a tourist site, where the local school was severely damaged. Preliminary (最初的) estimates put economic losses at 180 million yuan ( 22 million dollars ).

Governments in Yanyuan and the neighbouring Yunnan county of Ninglang has joined forces in the rescue effects and tents, clothes and medicine are badly in need of for the earthquake victims.

The mountainous terrain, heavy rain and several aftershocks all prevented rescue effects on Thursday. The rain could cause more badly damaged homes to fall down.

More dead and injured are expected “as rescuers have yet to reach many faraway areas”.It is very hard for rescue workers because most houses are scattered around the mountains, which are inhabited by Yi and other ethnic minority groups (少数民族)

The quake hit the area at 5:10 a.m. Beijing time (2,110 Wednesday GMT ). Earthquake regularly affect the two counties, with two quakes measuring 5.0 and 6.2 on the Richter scale killing at least three people and injuring more than 1,500 in Ninglang in November 1998.

The area is about 100 kilometers from the historic Yunnan town of Lijiang, which was struck in 1996 by an earthquake that killed more than 250 people anf injured 14,000.
