The original English language was the language of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes: People from the north of Germany who conquered(征服) many parts of England in the 5th century. But old English, as it is known, soon began to take words from other languages. About 800, the Vikings from northern Europe settled in Britain. Their language was like old English, but some of their words replaced English ones. Among them were common words such as husband, sky, window, happy, ill, wrong, and so on. Strangely, “they” is a Viking word; but the other pronouns come from old English.

In 1066, English was conquered by Normans, from the north of France. The Normans spoke French, and slowly many words of French began to enter the English language. Some of these were words which the Normans used when ruling England; words like city, village, and prison. There were also military words such as battle, peace and war. Other words showed the importance of food to the French: the names of most animals in English come from old English but the name of most meat (for example, pork, beef and mutton) come from French.
