I used to work as a waitress in a little restaurant. I felt frustrated then so I had been   26   that period. I hadn’t told anybody except my employer. Somehow a   27   had overheard (无意中听到) my saying that I had to go to another    28  . As I passed her table, she   29   me a card with her phone number on it. She explained that she lived in Sydney and that I should call   30  I needed any help.

Some weeks later, it was time for   31   appointment in Sydney and I flew there. I was   32  as I had never been there before and didn’t   33   anyone else there. So I   34   to ring the lady who had given me her   35   number, even though I had only met her that once. 36     I had arrived, she was very excited and came   37   to meet me. She gave me a bed and a meal and took me to my appointment the next day and afterwards, she took me back to the   38 . She treated me so   39   that I offered her a gift to express my   40   but she refused. She said “Your   41   to me is to offer your help to another when it is   42  .” Over the months we kept in touch but then for some reason our communication got less and less   43  .

I always felt I wasn’t giving enough to others as a   44  , but she had told me that I gave her very much and the way I   45   people was a gift. I now give a hand to others every day even if it is only a smile to those who have none to give.

Despite the great progress in medical science, human beings are constantly attacked by cancer, which means death. A woman named Bonnie suffered a   36  of discomforts caused by the treatment of cancer. She didn’t regard cancer as a   37  disease, but a laughing matter. She treated it in a humorous way. To put it in   38  way, she is teaching people that even though cancer isn't   39 , we can treat it in a humorous way.
Her second child was going to be born three months away   40  she was diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly, a   41  mother turned into a helpless woman afraid for her own   42 . One cold rainy evening last October, as a medical student, I was in a hospital, gathering data
for my graduation paper.
Holding a patient questionnaire   34  some simple yes-or-no questions, I walked towards a 43-year-old patient who lay in bed alone. I was worried whether she would approve of my demands at such a late hour.   35 , she treated it with consideration. Soon I finished and prepared to leave.   36  I could stand up, she spoke up in a weak voice asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening.
Then she started talking about herself as well as her   37 , "My husband died about a year ago,   38  me the only breadwinner of my family. My pay as a cleaner is   39  enough for me and my three kids. I don't know what my children would be if something bad happened to me."
I didn't know what to say. I desperately tried to remember the lessons from a communication skills class I had taken years earlier, but my mind was  40.
Without realizing it, I had begun   41  her hand. Now that I didn't have anything to say, I just sat quietly while she talked. That's when it occurred to me that she was not expecting any 42 from me. She   43  wanted me to listen. All 1 did was nod my head as a way of showing my 44.
The conversation went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, she stopped talking. "I'm very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problems, but I feel   45  now. I had no one to   46 out my problems to. Thank you so much, doctor."
Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine or advanced technology.   47 , they just need someone with the   48  to lend an ear and spare a little of their time. For me, that is one of the best things a doctor can do for a patient, doesn't it?
