Aside from doing schoolwork and studying, American students must also participate in various extra-curricular activities. Many students get involved in their communities by doing volunteer work at various local organizations. In fact, the school I attend even requires students to perform a certain number of hours of volunteer work per semester. It is part of our study hall(自修课) grade, as well as a graduation requirement.

There are many places to do volunteer work in the community. I think everyone should have the opportunity to read, and that we each should do our part to help those who don’t have the chance. There is a charity event, called One Book for A Window of Opportunity, in which Chinese students can donate a book to the children of the poor village Fangmaping. It was a Saturday morning，a day I believed would end in victory．For weeks，I had been preparing for the match at the county fairgrounds，sponsored(赞助)by our local riding club．My horse，Tonka, and I could run faster than any kid in the county, and I hoped to bring home a blue ribbon．

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.

By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic (逻辑) behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”

Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.

Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

Whether it is Mozart or Miley，your choice of music could determine whether you will perform well al your work．

A new study suggests that listening to music in the office improves the speed and accuracy of tasks such as data entry，proof reading and problem solving．

In an office-based experiment，88 pet cent of participants were found to produce their most accurate work when listening to music．

The study also found that 81 per cent completed their fastest work when music was played．

And it matters what type of music you listen to．For instance，if you’re doing your tax returns，then classical music is the most effective as it improves maths skills．

Listening to Jessie J or Justin Bieber could also improve your speed，with 58 per cent of participants completing data entry tasks faster while listening to pop songs．

During proof-reading，dance music，such as David Guetta，had the biggest positive impact with participants increasing their speed by 20 per cent compared to tests undertaken with no music at a11．

The research，undertaken by Brighton-based Mindlab International，suggests that silent offices may be the least productive．
