【题目】These days, it seems that almost all of us are too seriousMy older daughter often says to me, “Daddy, you’ve got that serious look again” Even those of us who are committed to non-seriousness are probably too seriousPeople are frustrated and anxious about almost everything -- being five minutes late, witnessing someone look at us wrong or say the wrong thing, paying bills, waiting in line, overcooking a meal, making an honest mistake -- you name it, and we all lose perspective(理性判断) over it

The root of being anxious is our unwillingness to accept life as being different, in any way, from our expectationVery simply, we want things to be a certain way but they’re not a certain wayLife is simply as it isPerhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best: “Our limited perspective, our hopes and fears become our measure of life, and when circumstances don’t fit our ideas, they become our difficulties” We spend our lives wanting things, people, and events to be just as we want them to be -- and when they’re not, we fight and we suffer

The first step in recovering from over-seriousness is to admit that you have a problemYou have to want to change, to become more easygoingYou have to see that your own anxiety is largely of your own creation -- it’s made up of the way you have set up your life and the way you react to it

The next step is to understand the link between your expectations and your frustration levelWhenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn’t, you’re upset and you sufferOn the other hand, when you let go of your expectations, when you accept life as it is, you’re free

A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without expectationDon’t expect people to be friendlyWhen they’re not, you won’t be surprised or bothered; if they are, you’ll be delightedDon’t expect your day to be problem-freeInstead, as problems come up, say to yourself, “Ah, another barrier to overcome” As you approach your day in this manner you’ll notice how elegant life can beRather than fighting against life, you’ll be dancing with itPretty soon, with practice, you’ll lighten up your entire lifeAnd when you lighten up, life is a lot more fun

1Why are people easily frustrated and anxious these days?

A. Because their children are disappointing

B. Because they have to look serious in public

C. Because life is becoming a greater burden

D. Because people have lost sensible judgment

2According to Benjamin Franklin, what was the cause of over-seriousness?

A. The fact that people’s perspective, hopes and fears are limited

B. The fact that people can’t change life itself

C. The fact that things fail to meet people’s expectations

D. The fact that circumstances turn out to be difficult

3In what pattern is this article developed?

A. Phenomenon, causes and solutions

B. Problems, explanation and conclusion

【题目】No one can believe that the over 6 300-kilometer long Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.

The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2 000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty(221 BC~206 BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.

Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human.

The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corral(畜栏) and pigsties(猪圈). Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrance. Rubbish is spread over the battlements(城垛). The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but dug out the entire base.

It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization(文明)and learn to love it.

1The main reason for which the Great Wall can be called“great”is_________.

A. it is made by brick B. It is very wide

C. it is very long D. it has a long

2Why does the author say the Great Wall might disappear

A. It is useless from now on.

B. It will be replaced by a new one.

C. Some parts of it are being destroyed.

D. It’s too old to be used again.

3The underlined part “those sections far away from the public eyes” refers to the parts of the Great Wall________.

A. that are too difficult to understand

B. nobody can watch

C. that are too far to been seen

D. that are not well known to the public

4What’s the main reason of the Great Wall’s being destroyed

A. The local people are short of culture knowledge.

B. The local people need bricks and stones to build houses.

C. The local people think that the Great Wall is not important.

D. The local people are against the government.

【题目】Dear Reader,

I receive many letters from children and can’t answer them all—there wouldn’t be time enough in a dayThat is why I am sending you this printed reply to your letterI’ll try to answer some of the questions that are commonly asked.

Where did I get the idea for Stuart Little and for Charlotte’s Web? Well, many years ago I went to bed one night in a railway sleeping car, and during the night I dreamed about a tiny boy who acted rather like a mouseThat’s how the story of Stuart Little got started.

As for Charlotte’s Web, I like animals and my barn(谷仓)is a very pleasant place to be, at all hoursOne day when I was on my way to feed the pig, I began feeling sorry for the pig because, like most pigs, he was doomed to dieThis made me sadSo I started thinking of ways to save a pig’s lifeI had been watching a big grey spider at her work and was impressed by how clever she was at weavingGradually I worked the spider into the story that you know, a story of friendship and salvation(拯救)on a farmThree years after I started writing it, it was published.(I am not a fast worker, as you can see.

Sometimes I’m asked how old I was when I started to write, and what made me want to writeI started early—as soon as I could spellIn fact, I can’t remember any time in my life when I wasn’t busy writingI don’t know what caused me to do it, or why I enjoyed it, but I think children often find pleasure and satisfaction in trying to set their thoughts down on paper, either in words or in picturesI was no good at drawing, so I used words insteadAs I grew older, I found that writing can be a way of earning a living.

Some of my readers want me to visit their schoolSome want me to send a picture, or an autograph, or a bookAnd some ask questions about my family and my animals and my petsMuch as I’d like to, I can’t go visitingI can’t send books, either—you can find them in a bookstore or a libraryMany children assume that a writer owns or even makeshis own booksThis is not true—books are made by the publisherIf a writer wants a copy, he must buy itThat’s why I can’t send booksAnd I do not send signatures—I leave that to the movie starsI live most of the year in the country, in New EnglandFrom our windows we can look out at the sea and the mountainsI live near my married son and three grandchildren.

Are my stories true, you ask? No, they are imaginary tales, containing fantastic characters and eventsIn real life, a family doesn’t have a child who looks like a mouse; in real life, a spider doesn’t spin words in her webIn real life, a swan doesn’t blow a trumpetBut real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imaginationAnd although my stories are imaginary, I like to think that there is some truth in them, too—truth about the way people and animals feel and think and act.

Yours sincerelyE.BWhite

【题目】No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is a criticism(批判) of life”, and “a heightening(提升) of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

1To have a better understanding of a poem, one should________.

A. discuss it with others

B. analyze it by oneself

C. copy it down in a notebook

D. practise reading it aloud

2Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?

A. Extending your life B. Saving your life

C. Criticizing life D. Heightening life

3What does the last sentence in the third paragraph mean?

A. More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.

B. Poetry is more important than any other subject.

C. One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry

D. Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses
